Stories about Zaka Ashraf

Zaka Ashraf: Another sad change in Pakistan cricket leadership

A change in leadership is needed. No, I’m not referring to the upcoming elections, nor am I talking about our favourite pantomime villain Misbahul Haq. I am in fact, referring to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairperson Zaka Ashraf, our supposed saviour from the tyranny of Ijaz Butt. So focused, it seems, are we on Ijaz Butt’s disastrous tenure that we fail to see the many failures of Zaka Ashraf and his lack of achievements. However, this article is not a comparison between the two; it only deals with the latter and his regime. A fresh start Although the PCB was riddled ...

Pakistan: Gold medal in political drama no medal in Olympics

Many sports in Pakistan, nowadays, unfortunately, have been high-jacked by authority figures and politicians. In the midst of their daily arguments and skirmishes, lie the lives of every athlete in Pakistan and thus the future of sports in the country. Amongst many debates is one highly irrelevant question about what political party the figurative authority, at the helm of the sports affairs, supports. The ongoing tiff between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) headed by Zaka Ashraf (politically affiliated with the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP)) and the Punjab government is a mere example of how sports work in this ...

Making sense of Pakistan’s new squads

The Pakistan Cricket Board press conference to announce the squad for the tour of Sri Lanka started well. Misbahul Haq stepped down as T20 captain, and Zaka Ashraf announced Mohammad Hafeez as the new T20 captain – well-played by the PCB in ensuring that Misbah ‘stepped down’ and was not pushed out. It is up to Hafeez now to demonstrate his leadership potential, which we all have heard of, and make that role of captain his very own. After this revelation came the announcement of the new squad. No wait – the new squads. The dream that PCB was contemplating regarding three different ...

My priority list for PCB

Undoubtedly, the new Pakistan Cricket Board management has been proactive in solving problems. Unexpectedly, it has been our new PCB Chairman who has come to the rescue. Zaka Ashraf seems to be more serious about his priorities than the previous management, but there remain issues that need immediate attention. So here’s my list of what should be top on the priority list: 1. International tours For more than a year, the Pakistani cricket team has not played at any venue outside of the Asian continent. Other than hosting a series in the UAE, we have had no practice on international pitches like Australia, England, South Africa and ...

What the Pakistan Premier League should look like

The dream of Pakistan Premier League (PPL) has finally become a reality: the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Zaka Ashraf has declared that this event will be held in October.  Here’s what I think the event should look like. Name To be really honest, I would like a unique name for our tournament. Case in point; Spain’s La Liga and Australia’s Big Bash, two unique names which almost every sports fan knows. And frankly there are too many Premier Leagues in our region. Why not something in Urdu? Total number of teams  There are speculations that 16 teams will feature in the event, which is ...

Pakistan cricket: Being bad has never been this good

Having watched the whole Test series and the third ODI last night, there is no doubt in my mind that Pakistan should officially be labelled as the most unpredictable cricket team of all time. The theme might sound to some as being repetitive or cliché, but the men in green can be so exhilarating and so exasperating in the same breath that you just can’t stop marvelling at the erratic nature of their game play and even more so at the results they keep coming up with in spite of it. Even though it is near foolishness to try and predict what the Pakistani ...

A checklist for the new PCB chief

It hurts to the core when I see the absolute shambles Pakistan cricket is in after being associated with it right from the start. Gone are the days when Justice Cornelius, Hafeez Kardar and Nur Khan were its administrative leaders, the individuals drawing respect from all over while representing Pakistan cricket abroad. I rest the blame on the amount of money associated with cricket. The perks of being head honcho attracted all and sundry, resulting in a total mess of the board’s management, which is overstaffed with most personnel being a drain on its resources, who need to be given ...

Zaka Ashraf: From farmer to PCB chairman

The much awaited, controversial and politically influenced post of Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board has finally been filled. Ladies and gentleman, put your hands together for Mr Zaka Ashraf, a man who has had absolutely nothing to do with cricket! Nice job Mr President – out of the multiple candidates presented to you, you have successfully chosen the worst one. Having said so, lets look back on Butt’s tenure as the chairman of the PCB to gauge whether Pakistani cricket can, indeed, fall lower than it already has. The damage done Ijaz Butt has faced a great amount of criticism based on his ...
