Stories about Younis Khan

Pakistan cricket has many problems; removing Mickey and Inzi will not solve them

After Pakistan’s dismal performance in the first half of their World Cup campaign, fans have been angry to say the least. The team is being criticised from left, right and centre, in both acceptable and unacceptable ways. It seems that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), like in all the previous World Cups where we didn’t live up to expectations, is feeling the heat and will be looking for scapegoats. After being whitewashed by England prior to the World Cup and their unpredictability in the tournament thus far, questions have been raised and fingers have been pointed. As a cricket fan ...

Younis Khan and PCB couldn’t reach an agreement – whose loss is it?

Just a few days ago, talks between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and former Test captain Younis Khan, for the appointment of the latter as the coach of the Under-19 Pakistan cricket team, fell through. Unconfirmed sources claim that the demands Younis made with respect to his remuneration was one of the deal breakers. The other bone of contention was the authority Younis had insisted on for his role as the coach, which included a very strong say in matters of selection as well. The PCB, apparently, only wants a coach who can just be around the team and guide ...

Is it time for Sarfraz Ahmed to hang his hat as the Test captain?

Sarfraz Ahmed takes pride in his T20 captaincy, as he holds the record of the highest win percentage as a T20 International captain and has taken Pakistan from number seven to number one in the International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 rankings. However, he hasn’t enjoyed similar success as captain in other formats. Although, Pakistan won the Champions Trophy under him, that has proved to be an anomaly considering the results that have followed in the ODI format. However, it is his Test captaincy that has continuously come under the microscope since he took over. Pakistan losing their first home ...

Do we have the right squad for the #PakvsSA Test series?

The last time the Pakistan Test team toured South Africa was in 2013, the year Pakistan, to everyone’s surprise, lost the Test series. The main problem was with the batting which seriously failed to live up to peoples’ expectations. Almost six years later, not much has changed, aside from the exclusion of Younis Khan and Misbahul Haq. This time, Pakistan has a slightly younger squad, with Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman at the forefront. In spite of the younger players, the Pakistan team batting line-up still remains a major concern. Pakistan’s recent Test form hasn’t been great. In Pakistan’s last two ...

#JusticeForFawadAlam: The lost shining star selectors love to hate

You may try and push against a wall, but it will never move, not even by a centimetre. This is the example of Fawad Alam, a relentless performer who just wants to play for his country, but can never seem to catch a break. Alam has all the necessary capabilities to perform well in international cricket, but unfortunately, fortune, or perhaps just the selectors are never on his side. Currently, Alam’s ordeal is all over social media, as he has once again been excluded from the Test squad for Pakistan’s tour of Ireland and England. There is no question ...

If 2017 proved anything, it was that the beauty of Pakistan cricket lies in its glorious uncertainties

Heading into the final stretch of 2017, I can say with absolute certainty that as far as Pakistan cricket goes, the past 12 months turned out to be radically different from what most people, including myself, originally perceived at the beginning of the year; the major factor here being Pakistan’s incredible Champions Trophy triumph. I think that’s true for the most of us who closely follow Pakistan cricket, isn’t it? Realistically speaking, a majority of the cricketing pundits and fans did not give Pakistan much of a chance, and personally, I did not expect them to even go beyond the ...

5 moments of pure magic that prove the Pakistan cricket team is a force to be reckoned with

I mean, let’s be real. The Pakistan cricket team has never been the team that played normally, so just limiting Pakistan’s miraculous wins to five times is a bit difficult. These impossible wins are nothing less than a magic trick, where the magician’s assistant is in the box and cut in half but still manages to escape alive. Defeating England at the Oval? The magician’s assistant in the box. That Sharjah Six? We just cut the box in half. The World Cup of 1992? Quarters now! That T20 World Cup of 2009? Seriously, please stop! That Whitewash of Australia? Assistant is still alive!! But these are moments everyone remembers, the ...

#PakvsSL: Pakistan played like Pakistan of the past, but is Sarfraz Ahmed to be blamed?

Mediocre. Average. At times brilliant, but mostly lethargic. Dare I say Pakistan cricket at its finest? There was a time not long ago, when two men anchored the entire cricket team to unimaginable victories, not just through impeccable performances but through charisma, style and discipline. The men who famously go by the names of Misbahul Haq and Younis Khan played a pivotal role in sending the Pakistan cricket team to the top of the Test rankings. Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan became owners of Pakistan’s most prolific partnership in Tests. Photo: Getty Images Although really short-lived, it was ...

Choosing Haris Sohail over Fawad Alam demerits PCB’s merit-based selection

If I could add a synonym for the word injustice in the dictionary, I would put Fawad Alam right next to it. For years, I have heard his name circulate in the media, but it rarely made its way inside the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) headquarters. Ten years have lapsed since Alam’s debut against Sri Lanka. During this time, PCB changed its chairman eight times, Pakistan lost its rights to host games on its own soil, Pakistan Super League (PSL) hit the market, I finished my college degree – and Alam is still putting together a plethora of runs next to his name in the rotten domestic ...

How will Pakistan fare in the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka without Misbah and Younis?

The Pakistan cricket team is set to resume international duty, as Sri Lanka’s tour of the UAE begins on September 28th (which will potentially feature a T20 in Lahore). This will be their first bilateral series since May. The summer of 2017 has been nothing short of unforgettable for Pakistan’s cricket fraternity, as the national team defied popular perception (not to mention the ranking system) by lifting the International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy in England. Pakistan won their first Champions Trophy title, India v Pakistan, Final, Champions Trophy 2017, The Oval, London, June 18, 2017. Photo: PA In addition to this ...
