Stories about West Indies

What can Pakistan expect to achieve in the Test series against West Indies?

Thirteen days after Dave Richardson presented the ICC Test Championship mace to Misbahul Haq and Pakistan contentedly sat on the top of the ICC ranking table, India dislodged Pakistan from the number one position that is now theirs to claim for a while – unless New Zealand can steal a win in the third and final Test and Pakistan clean sweep the West Indies. Has Pakistan already turned its back on Afridi?

Pakistani cricket is facing yet another controversy, but this time around it isn’t related to the players or the board, it involves the corporate world as well. Fake Account of Pervaiz KhattakPhoto: Twitter This unique controversy began taking shape when a fake Twitter account impersonating  Pervez Khattak, the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) tweeted the K-P Government was granting honorary citizenship to the West Indian skipper, Darren Sammy. Apparently, this was done on Peshawar Zalmi’s owner, Javed Afridi’s, request. Needless to say, the tweet went viral which resulted in the K-P government clarifying that only the federal government has the authority ...

Nine lessons Pakistan can learn from the other 2016 World T20 teams

The World T20 finished on an exhilarating note. What seemed to be a hopeless match for the West Indian team, turned out to be a miraculous victory when Carlos Brathwaite hit four consecutive sixes off Ben Stokes last over. While Brathwaite will be hailed as a hero in West Indies, the same cannot be said for Stokes. His reaction after his expensive over, 19 runs on four balls, was truly upsetting, but with everything said and done, England played brilliantly as well. With Joe Root’s 54 and two wickets for just nine runs, England started off great, but Marlon Samuels 85 ...

It’s down to India, West Indies and England, who are you betting on?

Amidst the pandemonium of leaked reports, press conferences, media bashing and, most importantly, Kulbhushan Yadav, the World T20 tournament in India is quietly and swiftly moving towards its conclusion. Not many Pakistanis tune into sports channels these days considering D-Chowk and Numaish Chowrangi are more entertaining. But ardent fans find their way to their TV sets to watch cricket being played in its truest form at the T20 World Cup. No adrenaline rush is equivalent to the thrill of watching cricket. A few days ago, I was quite disturbed after Pakistan crashed out of the match against Australia. My disturbance further transformed into diarrhoea while watching ...

Congratulations, Pakistan, on hosting a phenomenally successful PSL!

It came, it started and it conquered the hearts of millions, in our nation and beyond. The Pakistan Super League (PSL) finally concluded last night and what an ending it was. It was, arguably, the biggest and most colourful cricketing event ever held in the history of this country. PSL was an event which many thought would not kick off and an event that was continuously bombarded with criticism from all directions during its inception stage. But PSL’s success proved everybody wrong. I’m pretty sure its success may have even surprised its financial backers. Speaking of surprises, the winners of the ...

An impressive run was cut short as a motivated Pakistan team led by Gauhar Hafeez, lost to West Indies and crashed out of the tournament. While the end result was indeed a disappointment, the road towards the semis produced magical moments and introduced the cricketing world to the following future stars of Pakistan cricket. 1. Zeeshan Malik The Chakwal based batsman gave dominant performances with the bat to finish his tournament with 132 runs from four matches including an impressive unbeaten 89 against Canada. We need Amir back because our selection committee couldn’t find a replacement bowler

Pakistan’s team is being re-known for all the excitement it brings to the game of cricket. That comes from the fact that surprises are the forte of Pakistan cricket structure. So much so, that we ended up giving a 40-year-old his debut match just two series before the World T20, and now we are on the verge of giving a chance to a player who just completed his five year ban amidst a spot fixing scandal. We must give credit to the selection committee as Rafatullah Mohamed from Peshawar was included on the back-to-back impressive performances in the Domestic T20 tournament, ...

Cricket is not merely a sport for Pakistanis, it is our nation’s passion. The game also serves as a uniting force for the country. How can Pakistani fans forget the countrywide celebrations when Pakistan lifted the World Cup back in 1992? The 1992 World Cup overnight turned our cricket team into a bunch of national heroes. There are numerous cricketers who serve as role models for the youth to follow, regardless of whether they have won major tournaments or not. Saeed Anwar, Rashid Latif, Mohammad Yousuf, Shoaib Akhtar, Shahid Afridi, Younus Khan and many others were not a part of the ...

Pakistan Super League: The right people for the right job at the right time

By now everyone knows that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is planning on conducting its first ever international tournament in UAE, the T20 Pakistan Super League (PSL), which will be played from February 4 to 24,  2016. The logo launching ceremony was held on September 20, 2015 and a star studded dinner announcing the commencement of PSL was held in Lahore last week, suggesting that PSL activities are in full swing already. Plenty of renowned international stars have signed up for the tournament, including the hard-hitting batsman and ‘Man of the Series’ of World T20 2010, Kevin Pietersen, who announced his arrival through a video message on social ...

PCB should ban Amir, Asif and Salman Butt for life

The ban imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on the ‘tainted trio’ of Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt, for their involvement in spot fixing was officially lifted on September 2, 2015. Although the ban on the players is lifted, I vehemently oppose the selection of these cricketers for the Pakistani team ever again. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) should do what is right and impose a life ban on these players. They have caused immense embarrassment to the national team and the country. As of now, there is no consensus amongst former cricketers regarding the inclusion of these players in the national team. ...
