Stories about TV shows

Game of Thrones S07-E03 was, in its truest sense, a Song of Ice and Fire

If the last episode of Game of Thrones (GoT) can be compared to Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, then it would be justified to claim that episode three was more like The Godfather. While last week’s episode was packed with action and thrill, this week’s episode was filled with intense confrontations. As I said last week, this season is on steroids and at some point you might even feel like everything is moving too fast. This episode was titled ‘The Queen’s Justice’, which is an apt title considering the events that transpired. I believe this episode was, in its truest sense, ‘A Song of Ice and ...

Stop complaining about old people’s homes, Pakistan

As I was trying to read a book, a constant shrilly voice was piercing through my ear. It became hard to concentrate on the book anymore, so my mind started processing the voice. It was a TV show called What’s up Rabi – about an old home. In the hope of following a new perspective, I started following the show. The show treaded on well walked lines. The narrative sailed as expected: the old citizens are victims. In a platonic world, they should be at their homes right now, relaxing with their family. But, things did not go as ...

Stranger Things happening on TV and I love it!

There has been a lot of buzz regarding the new show on Netflix called Stranger Things, directed by the Duffer brothers. It seems like every other day a new show comes along and creates hype, but then subsides – unless of course it is the Game of Thrones. Having said that, there are a lot of things that make the series Stranger Things very strange, but in a good way. Stranger Things – a massive throwback Thursday It’s a #TBT minimised into a visualised TV show. So what could be better than a throwback to the early 80s – a time when E.T. was released. The show is about the ...

The B-side: Junaid Jamshed and untold stories behind the controversies

After leaving a lucrative career as a pop singer, Junaid Jamshed (JJ) has evolved into a preacher and poster boy for the austere deobandi group, the Tableeghi Jamaat. He once jokingly remarked, “When I was a singer people use to throw rose petals at me, since I came into Islam they throw stones at me.” This simple statement does more to highlight Pakistan’s state of affairs than explain how someone, who has been referred to by his musician friends, and in his Islamic circles, as “the nicest person one can meet”, can be party to one controversy after another? Some say, he is ...

7 cynical reasons Pakistanis have for why Netflix just won’t work in Pakistan

The idea for Netflix came to its co-founder, former math teacher turned businessperson, Reed Hastings, when he ended up paying late fines for a movie rental totalling twice the cost of the actual DVD. Here, Netflix began life some 18 years ago as an online DVD rental mail-order service that offered its users some unheard of conveniences. Netflix soon skyrocketed in popularity, leaving its brick and mortar competitor, Blockbuster, looking like a ghost town, and eventually filing for bankruptcy. Today, Netflix is the go-to internet TV service, especially when it comes to streaming TV shows and movies. Netflix also produces original content, including shows such ...

The good old days of ‘Subuh Bakhair’ and today’s deteriorating morning shows

The history of morning shows in Pakistan dates back to January 1988, when the nation witnessed its first morning show, Subuh Bakhair, live on Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV). The show was hosted by the famed author and travel writer, Mustansar Hussain Tarar – the Chacha Jee of our era – for nearly seven years. He is considered as the pioneer of live morning transmissions in Pakistan. “Assalam-o-Alaikum saray Pakistan aur pyare Pakistan!” (Good morning to all of Pakistan and beloved Pakistan!) These words still echo in the hearts and minds of millions. This was Tarar’s trademark with which he used to open his show in his famous idiosyncratic style. His prime audience majorly consisted of children, with ...

Why Pakistan needs Ramazan game-shows

A few days ago, a seminar was organised at my university by a company that handles computer hardware and software. At the end of the seminar, the sponsors arranged a question-answer session and every participant who answered correctly was given a gift hamper. I was one such participant and I won these really cool Lenovo speakers as a result. Even though it was a small thing, winning those speakers made my day. Social events and game shows of such nature are always appreciated. People become excited whenever a new game show comes to town or if a new contest is aired. Previously, we ...

Why Game of Thrones is infinitely better than Grey’s Anatomy

This post is for all those who like to compare Game of Thrones with Grey’s Anatomy. I would like to correct such people and let them know that no matter what happens, Grey’s can never be as amazing as GOT. And here are my reasons. Although I am no longer a fan of Grey’s, I must admit the show was one of my guilty pleasures at one point in time. Being the only brother of four older sisters, something peculiar like this was bound to happen; it could’ve been a lot worse I suppose, but oh well. I remember the show ...
