Stories about TV show

Fuller House was full of bad reviews, but I watched it anyway!

Last year we heard announcements of various promising new shows and movies for the upcoming year. One of the shows announced by Netflix as an original was Fuller House, with vows of reviving memories from the original, Full House. Full House saw three men raising three young girls and now, 21 years later, the same girls have turned into smart, beautiful and independent women. DJ Tanner, the first born child of Danny and deceased Pamela Tanner, is now Dr DJ Tanner-Fuller, a widowed mother and veterinarian. Stephanie Tanner, the middle child, is now a well-known DJ using the alias DJ Tanner, and the youngest daughter, Michelle, is now running her own fashion ...

Orange Is the New Black: Changing perceptions and clearing misconceptions

In the last two years, Orange Is the New Black has proven to be one of the most multi-faceted and diverse shows of this decade. It is a blend between a harsh reality, a cruel joke, and a fit of absolute hilarity. Around 80 per cent of the show is set at a Federal Women’s prison in New York. The show, based on a book of the same title, highlights a crude and in-your-face sense what life for the female inmates is like. What makes it interesting is that for every character on the set, every one that we see, we are ...

Five stereotypes that ‘Devious Maids’ smartly shuns away

The comedy-drama series Devious Maids made its much anticipated return with the release of season three in June 2015. The show stars Roselyn Sanchez, Dania Ramirez, Ana Ortiz, Edy Ganem, and Judy Reyes as five Latina maids working for elitist families in Beverly Hills, California, with dreams and ambitions of their own. But these five women are not just cleaning floors or washing dishes for a living. Apparently they hold on to many dirty secrets of the families they work for. However, keeping the ‘devious’ element aside, I believe the show suppresses a number of stereotypes and clichés about Latinas that the writers indirectly try to enlighten ...

Is Pakistan ready to talk about sex?

I don’t want to jinx it, but there is a weekly call-in show on Health TV freely discussing a subject that has traditionally caused much controversy. Clinic Online is now taking callers’ questions pertaining to sexual health. This is a clear breakthrough, in a country whose schools deny the presence of reproductive organs in the human body and whose public healthcare professionals walk around eggshells trying to impart important information about preventing STDs and unwanted pregnancies. Clinic Online on Health TV, featuring Dr Nazimuddin Siddiqui, invites callers to share their health concerns on-air, and offers helpful medical advice. The program clarifies its role as ‘advisory’, and does not sell itself ...

I agree with Sam Harris and Bill Maher

A few days ago, social media went rife with people praising Ben Affleck. “Batman comes to the rescue” was the general sentiment tweeted by everyone and my friends happily posted the link to the clip from Bill Maher’s show. People were ecstatic that an American, a prominent actor at that, finally stood up for Islam on a highly rated TV show. The clip did not just cause a sensation in Pakistan; it opened a debate online with prominent analysts like Reza Aslan and Fareed Zakaria taking up sides and expressing their opinions. As I thought over what Maher and Sam Harris had said, I found myself ...

Bring back shows we want to watch, bring ‘Ringer’ back!

I am not a TV geek, there are only very few television shows that I follow. The kinds that I tend to keep an eye on are those with wicked, devious themes and those that are full of secrets. Nowadays, it’s all about shows like The Big Bang Theory or the Game of Thrones. But in all honesty, such shows have never enticed me as a viewer. They are quite overrated, if you ask me. The unfortunate thing, however, is that a show, such as the Ringer, was not appreciated or given any credit; despite the fact that it had a riveting storyline and great cast to ...

‘What is dead may never die’…except George R R Martin

There is a rumour afloat that strikes fear in the hearts of millions. It’s not the reports of the brain eating amoeba or SARS or an exotic epidemic. No, this is much more critical, infinitely more blood-curdling horrifying. The rumour is that (hold on to your dear ones. If you are a misanthropic loner then a pillow will do) George R R Martin may not be able to finish the last installation of his ‘Song of Ice and Fire’ books which form the plot of the wildly popular TV show, Game of Thrones (GOT). There, it’s off my chest. The ...

Oscar Pistorius: Para-Olympian or cold blooded murderer?

We are completely hooked on the live coverage of Para-Athlete Oscar Pistorius trial as it is far more engaging than any successful reality series or a season finale of a TV show. Oscar Pistorius crosses the line to win gold in the men’s 400m — T44 final during the athletics competition at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Photo: AFP Oscar Pistorius shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp four times on Valentine’s Day 2013, allegedly mistaking her for an intruder. This led to a trial termed as the ‘trial of the century’ and is proceeding amidst massive media coverage. What makes ...

‘How I Met Your Mother’ comes to an end but was it legendary?

On Monday, March 31 ‘How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM)’ aired its series finale, and boy was it an emotional moment for all of us. This means that no more of Lily, Marshall, Barney, Robin and Ted having a drink at MacLaren’s Pub, no more of Barney’s flirt spree, no more of Ted’s sometimes exciting, sometimes painfully boring quest for true love and no more of anything legen…wait for it…dary. Unfortunately, the finale didn’t pan out as per my expectations. It was an ‘okay-ish’ end to what truly was a great show. It didn’t quite feel like ‘How I Met Your Mother’ but rather ...
