5 burning questions after watching the Avengers: Endgame trailer

Earlier this year, Avengers: Infinity War ended with Thanos wiping out half of the universe’s population and leaving all Marvel fans broken-hearted. I think it is alright to accept the fact we all shed a tear (or two) when we saw Peter Parker fade away in Tony Stark’s arms. When the credits started to roll, we knew our superheroes were at their weakest and that Thanos had really hurled the Avengers down a chasm of despair and helplessness. But I’m sure the world hasn’t seen the last of our heroes, as the trailer for Avengers: Endgame indicates that a new ...

Excelsior: In honour of the real superhero, here are Stan Lee’s 10 best cameos

Last month, I was sitting in a jam-packed cinema watching Venom. The movie was in its final minutes, and Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock was walking down the street when he ran into an old, white-haired man wearing dark shades. The crowd cheered immediately, and kept spurring while the old guy spoke to Eddie.  Photo: Giphy Obviously the old man knew about Venom, as he was none other than Stan Lee, the mind behind Venom and the other countless superheroes created by Marvel Comics. The fact that almost everyone in a packed theatre at a multiplex in Hyderabad, ...

Captain Marvel may be the superhero to end all superheroes, but Shazam is the clear winner

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been on a record-breaking streak for 10 years now, and this marvellous (pun intended) train seems unstoppable. However, if you look at how many female superheroes this universe has introduced over the past decade, you’re in for a shock. Apart from Black Widow (played by Scarlett Johansson), the MCU does not have any other bona fide female superhero, which is quite strange. No, Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) does not count in this comparison, and neither does Gamora (Zoe Saldana). Technically, Black Widow doesn’t count either, as she has never starred in her own movie and ...

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will be entering phase four of its production post Avengers 4, which releases in 2019. Only two movies, a Spider-man sequel and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol III, had been announced for phase four, but recently, Kevin Fiege, president of Marvel Studios, while talking to BBC said that the studio was planning to introduce Ms Marvel to the MCU as well, and that the plans to do so were in the works. Ms Marvel aka Kamala Khan is a teenage Pakistani-American superhero. She was first introduced in 2013 as a young girl, who was inspired by ...

Is Black Panther’s ‘Killmonger’ the greatest supervillain yet?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been a roaring success since its inception in 2008. Superheroes brought by Marvel to the big screen, from Iron Man to Thor to Captain America, have all become a major hit with both audiences and critics alike. However, even though Marvel movies have always been well-received and have shattered box office records time and again, these superhero flicks have somewhat lacked in the antagonist department. Yes, you read that right! Marvel villains are, at best, subpar, barring a few exceptions. If you’re asked to name a few Marvel villains, what are the names that will pop ...

‘12 Strong’ is a cliché post 9/11 war movie glorifying the US military we’ve been seeing for the past 16 years

Remind me again, what year is this? 2017? Well, 16 years on, and Hollywood is still stuck at 9/11. Don’t get me wrong – I believe that the 9/11 attacks are one of the most significant events in modern history. However, I am sick and tired of how Tinseltown has painted the tragedy and its aftermath ever since. While the overtly nauseating patriotism displayed in these movies, and the lack of facts, might do well with the American public, for the rest of us, it’s just another way of how Uncle Sam – in cahoots with the influential Hollywood – wants ...

8 reasons why ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ is the best Thor movie by far, edging towards surpassing ‘The Avengers’ even

Years ago, when we heard there was going to be another Thor movie, our reaction was eerily similar to this: Photo: Giphy The film’s trailer however, proved all the doubters, including us, wrong. Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Ragnarok looked unlike any other Marvel movie we had seen before – and we’ve quite literally seen them all. The trailer had us hyped for the movie, and – take our word for it – the final product does not disappoint. The response to the sequel has been fantastic so far, and here’s why we feel this is one of the strongest ...

Guys with ‘man buns’ are oh-so-hot, but Saheefa Jabbar Khattak gets a pixie cut and she loses her appeal and rights as a woman?

What if I told you that an educated Pakistani model, Saheefa Jabbar Khattak, was denied entrance into a women’s washroom because of her pixie haircut?  Yes, not only were her basic human rights denied, she was also shamed on social media for ‘sacrificing’ her hair length for a photoshoot. #isupportsaheefaA few hours ago, I came across a facebook live video that broke my heart, I mean literally! Saheefa… Posted by Fahad Hussain on Monday, August 21, 2017 To put an end to all the derogatory comments on her photos, Khattak recorded a live video and addressed all the haters directly. She spoke about the double ...

London Has Fallen along with Hollywood standards

Here we go again, yet another tediously mindless sequel. If torturing us with the 2013 action thriller, Olympus Has Fallen, wasn’t enough the producers come up with a bigger and dumber version. Was there even a demand for it? I mean come on, is anyone in here even aware of the predecessor let alone calling out for a sequel? Why, just why? The original featured terrorists taking over the White House, with Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) having to rescue President Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart) while averting a nuclear cataclysm. Aaron Eckhart.Photo: Screenshot Banning’s battlefield has now shifted ...

When good things come in ant-sized packages

Ant-Man is an American superhero film, produced by Marvel studios. Based upon a comic character with the same name, Ant-Man, the movie marks the conclusion of Marvel’s Phase Two of the Marvel cinematic universe.  Paul Rudd (Scott Lang) is starring as the lead role and is projected as a skilled albeit charming and street smart thief/ex-con who is seen helping his mentor cum friend, Dr Hank Pym (Michael Douglas). Dr Pym is the one who invented the technological wonder that is the “shrinking suit”. Photo: IMDb Photo: IMDb If you’re expecting Ant-Man to present the same pomp ...
