Glass: A forced marriage of Unbreakable and Split, has M Night Shyamalan lost his mojo?

Glass, the final chapter in writer-director M Night Shyamalan’s Eastrail 177 Trilogy, brings together the worlds of Unbreakable (2000) and Split (2016). David Dunn (Bruce Willis), the plane crash survivor with superhuman abilities from Unbreakable, is now a vigilante known as ‘The Overseer’, who is taking down criminals with the help of his now-grown son Joseph (Spencer Treat Clark). The superhero finds himself on the trail of Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy), the kidnapper from Split, who is referred to as ‘The Horde’ and who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. As soon as the two men clash, they are arrested and sent to ...

Dark and suspenseful, will ‘Glass’ help Shyamalan get his groove back?

M Night Shyamalan has admittedly had more misses (Lady in the Water, The Happening, The Last Airbender, After Earth) than hits (The Visit, Split) of late. But while he may not be the most consistently impressive filmmaker, the Indian-American director has still created quite a few interesting horror thrillers over his career, which is why the viewers’ attention is piqued whenever he releases something new. His latest venture is the upcoming Glass, the third instalment in the Eastrail 177 trilogy, which bring Shyamalan’s previous films Unbreakable (2000) and Split (2016) together, and serves as a sequel to both. The worlds of ...

Given its stellar cast, Ocean’s 8 is not the masterpiece one would expect

While Hollywood has always been very fond of remakes and spinoffs, it has more recently developed a fascination with female-centred continuations of beloved cinematic adventures and established franchises. From the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot to the upcoming The Expendabelles, The Hustle and The Rocketeers, several female-led reimagining are bringing old tales back to the big screen with a new twist. An example of this phenomenon currently in cinemas is, of course, the much-talked-about Ocean’s 8, the all-female spin-off from Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s trilogy. The action-comedy is centred on the character of Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) – the younger sister of the (probably) late Danny Ocean – who is trying to pull off ...

Sorry George Clooney, but no one carries out a diamond heist better than women, and Ocean’s 8 proves just that

Sixteen years ago, Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s 11 wowed audiences by offering a slick, stylish and entertaining new take on the crime-caper/heist genre. The movie had a star-studded cast led by George Clooney as the smooth-talking Danny Ocean, while also featuring the likes of Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts and Andy Garcia, among others. The film went on to spawn two sequels (Ocean’s 12 and Ocean’s 13) and received both critical and commercial acclaim with the trilogy itself grossing over a billion dollars worldwide. Sixteen years later, Ocean’s 8 attempts to do something similar but with a strictly feminine twist, with some of the biggest female actresses ...

Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and more – everything about ‘The Post’ screams spectacular!

Tinseltown’s fascination with the Vietnam War has manifested itself in many guises over the years. Right down from Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, all the way up to Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket, with Tom Cruise’s Born On The Fourth Of July and Robin Williams’ Good Morning Vietnam positioned somewhere in between – almost every imaginable genre has been covered by nearly all the major directors and actors. It was thus only appropriate that one of the greatest living filmmakers of our time got in on the action too. With the release of the trailer for The Post, it is now time for Steven Spielberg to traverse the oft-travelled trail from Hanoi to Hollywood. ...

Will American Horror Story season 7 reveal America’s worst nightmare?

Ryan Murphy was unusually forthcoming about the upcoming season of American Horror Story (AHS) during an appearance on Watch What Happens: Live in February, announcing that the theme of the new season will, in fact, be the most horrifying concept imaginable – the 2016 presidential election. Murphy said that he’s pulling inspiration from the November 8, 2016 election that saw President Donald Trump pull off a surprise victory over democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. Yesterday, Murphy dropped his latest teaser on Instagram, revealing the new cast member Billie Lourd with the caption, “Winter is coming. Can’t wait for everybody to see what the incredible Lourd does this season on AHS.” Winter is coming. ...

12 Years A Slave: A peek into the dark history of the US

While my friend and I were having coffee, he shared an interesting observation with me: “I always wondered why the black people were unable to overcome the practice of slavery in the United States through revolt?” I pondered for a few seconds and replied,  “Hasn’t this always been the case when it comes to dynamics between oppressor and oppressed? It is not just the physical scare that prevents a revolt, but a psychological one.” 12 years a slave is a film based on a book written by Solomon Northup, a ‘free negro’ in 1853. In 1841, Northup was living in the state of New York, alongside his wife and two ...
