Stories about performance

Ahmed Shehzad is neither performing nor behaving, yet he’s given more comeback opportunities

When Ahmed Shehzad first came under the limelight, a lot was expected of him and some even went on to tag him as the solution to Pakistan’s opening woes. However, despite a promising start, his international career has gradually been festooned with darkness – which is mostly down to his antics on and off the field. His latest involvement in the doping scandal is just another example of why the Lahore-born cricketer lacks the temperament to survive and thrive in modern-day cricket. It’s a pity that deserving players struggle to breakthrough in the side while Shehzad, despite his shenanigans, has ...

At least now we know what Ahmad Shahzad has been smoking!

During the series against World XI last year, I wrote on Ahmad Shahzad. Roughly nine months have passed and here I am writing about the same person again. He was playing selfishly back then and now he is allegedly playing with substance abuse.  The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has not officially stated the name of the cricketer involved in the doping test, however, they have confirmed that there was someone who tested positive. Reports have been surfacing that this “mystery man” is Shahzad. To be honest, it would not be a surprise if this turns out to be true. Not much ...

The Great Wall: When Hollywood marries Chinese mythology, and it just doesn’t work out

The East and the West have teamed up for the monster flick The Great Wall, a CGI-drenched, high budget action fest that comes off as nothing more than a wasted opportunity.  The Chinese-American co-production tries to marry Hollywood blockbuster sensibilities with Chinese mythology but forgets to add anything compelling to the mix. The premise revolves around the legend that the Great Wall of China was constructed as a barrier against the Tao Tei – a horde of alien monsters that rise every 60 years as a reminder of what happens when greed is unchecked. Two European mercenaries – William Garin (Matt ...

The Walking Dead returns with death, gore, violence and much more

After the show ended its sixth season on a cliffhanger, The Walking Dead has finally returned. The popular show had left things with Negan, the new baddie, holding Lucille (a baseball bat coated in barbed wire) and promising to kill one of the main characters. He chooses his prey by using a children’s rhyme and the credits start to roll before we can see Lucille in action. The Theory of Everything: Serenely comforting yet harrowingly moving

Stephen Hawking, a British theoretical physicist, is one of the most extraordinary and brilliant minds that we have in the world today. His is a brain of astounding powers. The ground-breaking ideas that he has unleashed onto the world are significantly responsible for transforming the ways with which we make sense of the universe and have established him as a ubiquitous sensation; a personality so impeccably prominent and pertinent that he has been considered by many as the equitable heir to none other than Einstein himself. Badlapur: A perfectly twisted revenge saga

What happens when a ‘conventional chocolate boy’ opts for an unconventionally intense and complicated role, contradicting his previous comical high school performances? What makes a filmmaker choose such an actor for a main lead in his movie? How good can revenge sagas be? Well, Badlapur will answer all these questions for you. Varun Dhawan, for the very first time, is seen in a role different from his usual ‘cutesy’ avatar. His performance has been surprising, to say the least. Along with him, we come across Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who, after Kick, has managed to score another meaty role with more screen presence this time. [caption id="" align="alignnone" ...

The demons on my stage

I was happy, content and so engrossed in the performance that the world ceased to exist for a few moments and then, suddenly, the whole act collapsed right in front of me. The performance ended abruptly. The audience didn’t even get a chance to applaud but I could hear a few startled gasps. People didn’t expect such a hurried finish. It wasn’t just hurried, but sudden and shocking. I went outside to catch some fresh air, hoping and praying to return in a few minutes to experience a dramatic ending to the performance, but I was wrong… they left, never ...

If you’re looking for brainless fun, Dolly Ki Doli is the movie for you!

Dolly Ki Doli is a cinematic venture that has been hyped up beyond understanding. One reason that comes to my mind, surrounding this hype, is the fact that this is the first time Arbaaz Khan, Salman Khan’s baby brother, has chosen a lead who is not his own brother. Dolly Ki Doli revolves around a con artist named Dolly (Sonam Kapoor) who marries young men from different backgrounds and religions, and then steals their money. To help her complete such feats, she has a gang of con artists who act as her family members. Zeeshan Ayub (one of the ‘family members’) extracts information ...

Mortdecai: Only as good as its trailer

Johnny Depp is a fantastic actor and it is always a pleasure to watch his ventures. Even in supporting roles, his performance demands attention and appreciation. While his movies don’t exactly mint money, as would normally be expected, they do guarantee fans. Thanks to its trailer, his upcoming visual treat Mortdecai has already heightened the interest of audiences, and Depp fans, across the globe. The story revolves around a stolen Goya painting, ‘The Duchess of Wellington’, rumoured to contain a bank vault code that leads to lost Nazi gold. Art dealer and part time rogue, Lord Charlie Mortdecai, played by Depp, ...
