Stories about Panama Papers

Is Singapore turning into Pakistan with its uncontested and undemocratic election of Halima Yacob?

Halima Yacob, a former advocate of women rights, of psychological health and senior citizens, and the speaker of the Parliament of Singapore, was recently sworn in as the first female president of Singapore. Her election may be a milestone for Singaporean women, but nothing more. The Singaporean government curtailed the presidency criteria, which authorised Yacob as the most befitting candidate for presidency. Her selection met with social media outrage that is justified due to the fact that it was a uncontested election. come on. only Halimah received the eligibility certificate. did you guys have to make it THAT obvious? #NOTMYPRESIDENT — Edward C. Is Nawaz Sharif trying to prove he is above and beyond the law?

Last year’s Panama Paper leaks not only exposed the truth behind the corrupt and swindling ways of Nawaz Sharif but also the person he really is. It turns out that behind his false facade of being a selfless father, husband and brother, Nawaz is really nothing more than a self-involved actor who took our country for a ride. Furthermore, he claims to love nothing more than his countrymen and is quick to rise from the ashes like a phoenix (despite being ousted repeatedly), when this is anything but true. Last week, in a great twist of irony, Nawaz finally decided to take us on ...

Was Nawaz Sharif dishonest by virtue of not declaring something he could not know he was supposed to declare?

On July 28th, a three member special bench of the Supreme Court announced their judgment. This judgment was followed by a final order of the five-member larger bench, in the infamous Panama Papers case. Nawaz Sharif, the recently ousted prime minister of Pakistan, was declared dishonest and was disqualified from being a member of the National Assembly under Article 62(1)f of the Constitution. The judgment was always politically controversial even before it was authored and announced. Unfortunately, it has also become a legal controversy at the centre of which lies the all mighty and all powerful Article 62(1)(f). The late General Ziaul Haq, in his attempted ...

#GoneNawazGone: Today could be the darkest day in Pakistan’s judicial history or the day a new Pakistan was born

The nail-biting suspense leading up to the verdict is now over. The unthinkable has finally happened. Nawaz Sharif, who managed to win three elections and serve as Pakistan’s prime minister, has been disqualified and faces political extinction. This is the mother of all Supreme Court (SC) verdicts and whether it will change the country’s fate for better or worse will be decided in the next few days. It could be the darkest day in Pakistan’s judicial history or it may be remembered as the day a new Pakistan was born, depending on whether or not the SC disqualifies others who are equally corrupt (which includes ...

#GameOver: Nawaz Sharif now has only two options – resign or be forced to resign

Alas, the unthinkable has happened. The eagerly anticipated joint investigation team (JIT) findings have implicated the members of the ruling Sharif family for not only concealing assets, but for failing to reveal their sources of income and presenting a fake money trail. Startling revelations made by Panamagate JIT in final report https://goo.gl/YxZNQ2 Posted by Express Tribune Video on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 The Sharif family members have officially been declared ‘criminals’ by the JIT findings. Over the last few months, we witnessed the most appalling, cringe-worthy and condemnable portrayal of arrogant self-righteousness by the ruling party, despite receiving the ire of the public. No amount of shaming could budge the Pakistan Muslim ...

You do not salute to the person, you salute to the rank – and that is exactly why Arsala Saleem saluted Maryam Nawaz

The Panama joint investigation team (JIT) is in town and it is making headlines for all the right reasons. The entire ruling Sharif clan has paid them a visit. The last person to make an appearance before the JIT was Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of the prime minister. Many are referring to this as her political launch. However, this news was overshadowed by a lady police officer, Miss Arsala Saleem, saluting Maryam. Miss Saleem accompanied Maryam to the JIT meeting, since all JIT members are male and are somehow deemed unfit to question a woman alone. She saluted Maryam when she arrived to appear before the JIT on ...

Nawaz Sharif is now a billionaire and expects people to not question the source of his money inflow – if only, dear PM

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif retained his status as a billionaire in the latest information regarding politicians’ net worth released by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). This data has been derived from the information the candidates file with the ECP when running for public office. This list is published every year, though there is no actual need. It just reaffirms what the nation already knows – in a country where a large chunk of people are living below the poverty line, the politicians seem to be getting richer and richer. For example, in 2011, the assets owned by Nawaz and Kulsoom Nawaz ...

Brilliant badmashi: How Nehal Hashmi got away with retracting his resignation

“The people who are trying to hold us accountable, listen closely. You shall not be spared.” These were the ominous words of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) leader and future candidate for villain in a Bond movie, Senator Nehal Hashmi. Hashmi was referring to the joint investigation team (JIT) which had been tasked by the Supreme Court to further investigate Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s financial holdings, which has been the subject of the Panama Papers controversy in Pakistan. It was slightly embarrassing for Hashmi that Nawaz asked him to resign from his senators seat for his comments. “The prime minister has declared Nehal Hashmi’s speech as an irresponsible one,” said ...

Why a ban on Qatar may not be in the interest of the countries joining forces against them

While the announcement that several Middle Eastern counties including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Yemen were outright banning all relations with Qatar, the fact that they actually did it has had reverberations across the globe. Saudi Arabia declared a complete ban on all air, sea and land routes into and out of Qatar while UAE and Bahrain demanded the expulsion of Qatari diplomats from their countries. At last count, Libya and Maldives had joined the growing chorus against Qatar. Qatar is a tiny emirate jutting out as a peninsula from Saudi Arabia towards Iran. While it is a member of the international oil supplying nation group Organisation ...

Why are you celebrating, Nawaz Sharif? It’s not over as yet!

The long wait is finally over. The honorable judges have announced the verdict in the Panama Leaks case, and the overjoyed followers of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif are distributing sweets under the assumption that their leader has been exonerated and declared innocent of any wrongdoing. Dear Nawaz Sharif, they are wrong. It was a split verdict, and you escaped by the skin of your teeth. Two out of the five judges ruled that you should be disqualified, because you are not “sadiq” (honest) and “ameen” (upright) as required by the Constitution. The other three judges stated that further investigation is ...
