The trailer for the third season of Netflix’s most anticipated show, Stranger Things, released recently and shook the internet to its very core. Since there is a long wait till it releases (Stranger Things premiers in July) fan theories have begun emerging to keep us busy until we see the real deal. These range from bizarre to probable. So I thought rather than doing a mere shot-by-shot review, why don’t we ponder over the Easter Eggs the show runners have dropped in the trailer? Photo: Giphy The following are my predictions for the new season. 1. Another Barb? In ...

Mystery, thrill and Amitabh Bachchan, Badla promises to be as spectacular as Teen

Over the years, Amitabh Bachchan has appeared onscreen with many leading ladies. Who can forget his pairings with Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Rekha, and many other leading ladies of Bollywood? To his credit, he’s kept going strong and still commands a sizeable pull at the box office. After the success of Pink, it looks like Bachchan is forming a new hit pairing with the immensely talented and significantly younger Taapsee Pannu, albeit not of the romantic kind. A second movie, Badla, featuring these two actors is set to release this year. There’s once again a legal angle to the plot ...

Dull and unfocused, Bird Box is no better than a recycled mix of The Happening and A Quiet Place

Post-apocalyptic movies are a dime a dozen in Hollywood these days. For some reason, this seems to be the latest genre that Hollywood is intent on milking for every buck. Chances are, if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all, particularly the post-apocalyptic movies that see a group of survivors (from basically every demographic) band together to fight off an evil force, as humanity faces extinction. Be it zombies, monsters, aliens, giant-sized insects or in the case of The Happening, plants. While there is nothing wrong with the genre itself, Hollywood’s approach to making mainstream post-apocalyptic blockbusters remains largely the same ...

Detective Pikachu gives us a peek into the world of Pokemon… and a trip down memory lane

As a child, I remember making sure that my evenings were free. I used to delay doing my homework and avoided going out of the house so that I had the evening all to myself without any disturbances. This was because I wanted to watch Pokemon without any distractions. Watching Ash and his sidekick Pikachu go on exciting adventures while encountering rare Pokemon was an unforgettable experience. Apart from watching them onscreen, I used to play Pokemon games on my Gameboy Advance. Like any other fan, I too wondered what it would be like if Pokemon were to live amongst ...

A Simple Favour: Not the most riveting mystery but still captivating enough

Ever since David Fincher’s Gone Girl captivated viewers with its dark and twisted web, a number of similar big and small screen projects have tried to replicate its success, but have invariably paled in comparison to the 2014 thriller. The latest in line is A Simple Favour, a new mystery thriller built around flawed, complicated women, and is yet another film that will find it hard to avoid comparisons to its more impressive predecessor. Based on Darcey Bell’s 2017 novel of the same name, the movie follows the story of a vlogger who tries to solve the disappearance of her mysterious best friend. Stephanie (portrayed ...

Blake Lively, infidelities, mysteries: Is ‘A Simple Favour’ the ‘Gone Girl’ of 2018?

Director cum screenwriter Paul Feig, renowned for his unforgettable comedies such as Bridesmaids (2011), Spy (2015) and Ghostbusters (2016), is back in Tinseltown to entice filmgoers. However, this time, he is ready to amaze his fans with an utterly diverse genre; yes, he is trying his hands at a film noir – a mystery thriller titled A Simple Favour. Based on Darcey Bell’s debut novel of the same name, both Bell and Feig utilised the anecdotal narration method to tell the chronicle through three main characters: Stephanie Ward, Emily Nelson and Sean Townsend. The teaser and the trailer both received positive response from ...

Netflix’s ‘Altered Carbon’ transports you to the 24th century, where death is no longer the ultimate truth

If you think cyberpunk is some new bohemian movement of the current digital age – something I am guilty of doing myself – then you are as far from being correct as a hippy would be from a drug-free lifestyle. Cyberpunk is actually a subgenre of science fiction, in which the setting is futuristic and often dystopian as well.  Technological advancements in such a society are at their peak, along with the disparity between the haves and the have-nots. On the other hand, morality becomes the primary victim; the one thing close to hitting rock bottom. If Blade Runner is the ...

Netflix’s ‘Dark’ is a deeply fascinating and eerie tale that demands your undivided attention

I can perfectly understand why Stranger Things was everyone’s favourite series, but for me personally, it was a tad too “Hollywoodish,” that is, it was a little too mainstream for my liking. Now don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with playing to the gallery. Duffer Brothers’ pet project was a fantastic visual treat with memorable characters and a spooky, intriguing narrative. It was at par with the best popcorn blockbusters that Hollywood has to offer, but regrettably, it’s not something that particularly floats my cinematic boat. However, Netflix’s first German original Dark – hailed as the adult version ...

The Sinner: A cinematic equivalent of a literary page-turner

The ‘whodunits’ have been a staple of modern mystery fiction ever since the genre became widely popular through novels during the early parts of the 19th century. Even contemporary media is replete with TV shows and films where the core ingredient is a crime that needs to be solved by figuring out the identity of the perpetrator.  But recently, there is a major shift in how this genre has been handled. Even last season was all about ‘who,’ with Emmy Award winners The Night Of and Big Little Lies, but this year is predominantly about the ‘why’ when it comes to TV shows dealing with ...
