Stories about murder

Will she ever learn?

Her heels clicked as she briskly walked on the cemented sidewalk. It grew darker and darker as the sun drowned behind the mountains. The shadows grew taller and the evening got chillier. Her hair flowed back freely as the wind blew through it. She clutched her shawl closely to her chest, accumulating as much warmth as possible as her flimsy chiffon dress was not doing a very good job. The streets were deserted, no car or pedestrian in sight. It almost seemed like it was midnight rather than twilight. As the last line of light disappeared from the horizon, ...

Mystery, thrill and Amitabh Bachchan, Badla promises to be as spectacular as Teen

Over the years, Amitabh Bachchan has appeared onscreen with many leading ladies. Who can forget his pairings with Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Rekha, and many other leading ladies of Bollywood? To his credit, he’s kept going strong and still commands a sizeable pull at the box office. After the success of Pink, it looks like Bachchan is forming a new hit pairing with the immensely talented and significantly younger Taapsee Pannu, albeit not of the romantic kind. A second movie, Badla, featuring these two actors is set to release this year. There’s once again a legal angle to the plot ...

First You, now Ted Bundy: Don’t blame Netflix if you’re sexualising psychopaths

Human brains are hot-wired to feel emotion and empathy, a quality that is quite handy when it comes to the survival of our species. Consequently, individuals who lack this basic human trait are always the subject of our morbid fascination. One case in point is the recent Netflix documentary series Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, which provides a unique look inside the mind of the infamous American serial killer, Theodore Robert Bundy, infamously known as Ted Bundy. Bundy was an ‘all-American boy’ who grew up in an average white family, had a degree in psychology and was on his way ...

Tahir Dawar’s brutal murder and the possible existence of IS in Pakistan is a wake up call

Squeaking with laughter while speaking to a journalist, then concluding with a sardonic snide, Iftikhar Durrani, Imran Khan’s spokesperson, claimed with confidence that SP Tahir Dawar was “safe” in Peshawar on October 28th. Unfortunately, however, with the recent discovery of the policeman’s dead body, that arrogant snide should only linger as a haunting memory for the prime minister’s top aide. The note from the Islamic State (IS) found alongside the late SP’s body is what makes matters worse than one could potentially begin to imagine. The latter being so, specifically because the government has repeatedly claimed that neither IS nor any direct ...

According to this “scholar”, ‘sins such as murder and rape will be ignored as long as you pray’

The dilemma of the contemporary age is the excess of unsorted information masquerading as knowledge and the most abundantly distorted type of ‘knowledge’ these days is ‘religious’ in nature. A certain breed of such so-called scholars exists among us, disseminating a message that is far from truth. Their half-baked ideas about religious norms, practices and forms of punishment aren’t based on logic or humanity. Such religious quacks probably existed before our time too but the ubiquity of social media brings them to our phone screens whether we want them to or not. Recently, I came across one such ‘religious cleric’ ...

Even Ayushmann Khurrana’s brilliant acting could not save Andhadhun from its many blind spots

Not many Bollywood directors have tried their luck making films about blind protagonists, one can only recall a handful of movies such as Qatl (featuring Sanjeev Kumar), Aankhen (featuring Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal and Arjun Rampal), Black and Sparsh. After a long hiatus, Sriram Raghavan has come out with another film taking up this not-so-easy task. Raghavan is the very same director who previously made films like Ek Hasina Thi, Johnny Gaddar, Agent Vinod and Badlapur. His filmmaking style has always been unique and distinct. In all of his films, characters are complicated, confused and exhibit a certain spontaneity. His latest venture is Andhadhun, which features ...

Sakina’s soul is calling for justice, but is Pakistan listening?

Would it be true to suggest that only the mighty can get justice in Pakistan, or just another misnomer? No matter what side of the argument you support, it is undeniable that this is a question of wide importance in a country such as ours. On September 13, 2018, a brutal crime was committed in the Chak 92 JB area of Gojra. A man called Safdar, with the help of an accomplice, threw acid on a sleeping family out of revenge. The ferocity of the attack did not stop at this; they viciously poured acid into Sakina Bibi’s mouth and ...

The title of ‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace’ is enough incentive to watch it!

Let’s be honest here. How many of us actually know who Andrew Cunanan is? Not many, I’d assume. Now how about this man called Versace, ring any bells?  Forgets the instrument that goes ding-a-ling when you shake it, the aforementioned name deserves banging of drums. People my age should be well aware of the fact that this iconic fashion designer got assassinated a couple of decades back. But how was he killed, why was he killed, and more pertinently, at least considering the relevance of our current discussion, who was the killer? Which brings us back to this man named Cunanan, ...

Mahwish Arshad’s cold-blooded murder puts the killer and women behind bars

“O Mother! Hold me in thy embrace, For it is where no scoundrels roam; ‘tis the safest place, Come wipe my blood away and clutch me to your chest, I toiled the day away and now I wish to rest…” Last year, on our way to Lahore, my mother and I chose to travel through a private transport company bus. A young girl in her early 20s welcomed all passengers on board and started serving people food and drinks. A few minutes later, a group of boys boarded the bus and started signalling to the hostess. Their constant catcalling and bothersome behaviour was ...
