Stories about Mohammad Hafeez

Changing the team captain will not solve Pakistan’s problems; we also need to change the players

Pakistan entered the International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy as the lowest ranked team in the ODI charts. Even before the tournament began, Pakistan had no hope of winning, or in more realistic terms, had no real chance of crossing the group stage, with India and South Africa being in the same group.

Who do you think will win the Champions Trophy match between Pakistan and South Africa?

India already decimated Pakistan in the match played between the two arch rivals this past Sunday. I think South Africa, which has top ranked bowlers and batsmen, will easily be able to win the match against Pakistan. In sync: Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja celebrate the wicket of ...

#PakvsInd: It was the same old Pakistan making the same old mistakes all over again

Pakistan losing to India in International Cricket Council (ICC) tournaments is now becoming a norm in international cricket, much to the disappointment of their fans. Judging by where Pakistani cricket is headed, it seems unlikely that this trend is going to change over the next few years. India registered yet another comprehensive victory over their arch rivals, but this time in the ICC Champions Trophy. The eight-team tournament was the only ICC event where Pakistan held an edge over India on a head to head basis. However, the latest defeat proves that that is no longer the case as the ...

It’s #PakvsInd in the Champions Trophy once again, but can India equalise the score of 2-1?

The Edgbaston cricket ground will be the pinnacle of attraction for the entire cricketing fraternity as India and Pakistan renew their age-old rivalry this coming Sunday. Although the elusive International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy commenced yesterday, you can be assured that the tournament will dive into fifth gear when these two arch rivals lock horns. Champions Trophy is the only major ICC event where Pakistan has the upper hand over their nemesis. The green shirts have claimed victory twice and suffered defeat just once in a total of three matches. Both Sarfraz Ahmed and Virat Kohli are coming into this mega event (ICC events) with their first major assignments as captains of ...

PCB should rethink its team selection for the West Indies tour

This month, the Pakistan cricket team, led by Sarfraz Ahmed in all three formats, will embark on the West Indies tour to play a series of four T20 matches, three Tests and three One-Day Internationals (ODIs), which starts on March 26th. In order to ensure direct qualification for the 2019 World Cup, it is imperative for them to win the upcoming ODI series. The last World Cup was played in 2015 in Australia where Pakistan made it to the third quarter-final against Australia but lost miserably by six wickets with 97 balls remaining. Currently, Pakistan ranks eighth on the ODI ...

Who will the next Misbahul Haq be?

After having been thrashed by the mighty Australians on their home turf, Pakistan looks to adjust to life after Misbahul Haq and Younis. Whether the two get a go in the upcoming series remains to be seen but the future doesn’t seem too bright for the men in green unless the management finally decides to make a new young team from scratch. Like all great teams of the past and the present, Pakistan must delve deep into their domestic structure and search for answers before it’s all too late. Whilst one might argue that Pakistan’s domestic structure is full of ...

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

The alarm bells were not ringing in the desert heat; they were, in fact, ringing aloud in the immediate aftermath of the Pakistan team’s recent achievement; drawing the Test series 2-2 in England. On the back of a resounding victory at the Oval, Mickey Arthur stated that the plan that won Pakistan that Test was, in fact, a plan that Pakistan would adopt moving forward and is seen as the long term solution for the batting line-up. But did it really win us with that Test? After much deliberation, when Arthur was appointed, it was seen as a step in the right direction to modernise ...

Could Sami Aslam be the answer to our opening woes?

Temperament is not a word often associated with us Pakistanis. We like whatever excites us the most. In other words, passion is what drives us and adrenaline is what keeps us alive. There is never a dull moment in the life of a Pakistani. I guess that’s just how it is. But sometimes (almost every time) all this “thinking from the heart” culture can have dire consequences. If we are ready to accept the fact that this ‘culture’ affects our lives in one way or the other, how can we not believe that this same ‘culture’ seeps into our sports, ...

Pakistan’s victory at the Oval was the best Independence Day present we could get!

Yesterday’s Test match was a befitting conclusion to one of the most engrossing Test series played in recent times. A 2-2 draw in the Pakistan-England series seemed like an appropriate result for both teams who played their level best. It was also an incredible Independence Day present from our team to Pakistani cricket fans; it couldn’t have been timed better. Why is Mohammad Hafeez still on our national team?

Thirteen years into his international debut, Mohammad Hafeez has failed in justifying his position as an opener in the Pakistan cricket team. What’s even more disappointing is that this statement holds true for all three formats. The sign of an average player is that when playing at home (home for us being UAE), he plays well. But the moment conditions change and pose as a challenge, such as in England, South Africa and West Indies, he fails miserably. No wonder then that Hafeez’s average in away Tests against these mentioned teams is not even 20. Try to recall when he ...

What went wrong for Pakistan at Old Trafford?

Pakistan succumbed to a distressing defeat at the hands of England at Old Trafford. England was clinical in all three departments, Pakistan were equally mediocre and the disparities were embarrassingly obvious. Surely an anti-climax after the much-awaited restoration of honour at Lord’s, Pakistan was reminded that their honeymoon period was over.  Pakistan succumbed to a distressing defeat at the hands of England at Old Trafford.Photo: AFP While it would be sinful to completely downplay Pakistan’s valiant effort at Lord’s, Pakistan was bailed out by some individual brilliant efforts and Misbahul Haq had to come to the rescue, ...
