Stories about men

When the Express News office was under attack, nobody cared

Earlier this morning, a group of armed men – four to be precise – riding motorcycles, opened fire at the Express News office in Karachi. This was at precisely 11:30am this morning. Around 38 rounds were fired and the men escaped via Baloch Colony, unharmed. One security guard and a female employee were injured and both of them were shifted to a hospital for treatment. Hopefully, they will survive. I am telling you all of this because contrary to what you may believe, no major news organisation covered the attack; not one. You’d think such a cowardly attack on Express News ...

Swat Jirga: For the women, by the women – but will it work?

The best environment for terrorism is ‘poverty, injustice, racism, and deprivation of human rights,’ factors identified by Malala at the UN on June 12. Pakistan, where terrorism is a major force, has them all. Malala, a living example should know, and obviously her defiance emboldened other women, since all four factors are rampant in Malala’s district, Swat, where the men are known for male chauvinism, like a dragon is also known as a worm. Tahira, married at 12, suffered marital abuse. There’s nothing unusual about either the child marriage or the abuse, they happen all the time. One day her husband ...

The brown leopard that lost its majesty

Chaos echoed in the hills of Nathiagali when a number of men, dressed inappropriately in shalwar kameez and slippers, were spotted resting steel cages on their shoulders, while some tripped and others balanced. As they hiked through the hills, turning heads, a number of bystanders, including women and children, just tagged along in excitement. What was thrilling the crowd and making me sad was that a beautiful animal that could have been roaming in the wild was caged up. Drowsily resting its head on a piece of raw meat and occasionally moving its tail was a brown leopard. Entrapped in a ...

Men: a different breed

Cruelty knows no bounds and all we humans suffer. The fairer sex is mostly the one who suffers the cruel death that takes the final breath away. Be it Indian Nirbhaya or South African Reeva. Some men, like Nirbhaya’s boyfriend, are perfect examples of tragic Hamlets in our midst, while others like Oscar Pistorius, the double amputee track star, are like Shakespeare’s outright cruel Othello! Whatever the case may be, when we talk of men, we end up defining them as a different breed altogether, a breed if not confusing like the fairer sex, is at times, considered more violent and ...

Men versus women: Who knows what looks best?

It’s a common myth that men generally don’t agree with women’s fashion choices. We wanted to put the myth to test and see how the verdict of a female fashion expert tallies up against the opinion of regular guys. So, meet the boys; Essa Malik 28, is a graphic designer and photographer who likes all things beautiful. He is currently single Shaheryar Popalzai 28, is a journalist by day and pseudo-punk by night. He is engaged. Jahanzaib Haque 30, is a news-obsessed social media junkie who has spent an inordinate amount of his life checking out women, mostly on Facebook. He is currently married. The Guru, Amna ...

Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the skinniest of them all?

It is the ultimate battle. The one that every woman in this region, blessed with the infamous sub continental curves, (that has driven many creatively verbose men to poetry and others to tears), has fought with – her shape!  While some have returned home victoriously, embracing ‘sleeveless-ness’, skinny jeans and all forms of Western attire in all its glory before it was too late, others have taken their last breaths on the venomous treadmill, expressing their desire to enter heaven only if they were re-incarnated as a size zero! Enter any local gym and you will see a variety of ...

Why I’d rather be a man and not a woman

There is no tragedy greater than pushing yourself into a box someone else made for you. I think as far as I can think back, I never appreciated my gender because of the “female” box, and I always felt that being a guy was better. It’s a tiny little dark place, that box … I hated it. My nani’s (maternal grandmother) house was a magical land where you could run at supersonic speed, climb the highest of trees, and dream up the most amazing things. All of those things are things girls aren’t supposed to do (yes, even the dreaming amazing ...

A protest through the eyes of a journalist

Nothing is more dangerous than a mob that gets carried away by religious fervour and frustration. It can be equally threatening to report about such a mob as a journalist. On September 21, the day the whole country shut down to condemn an anti-Islam video, there were mad men out on the streets bent upon destroying public and private property. They seemed to be having fun — raising slogans and cursing the US. For a reporter, it is easy to be swept away by the sheer energy displayed by boys wielding sticks and bricks. Karachi offers a lot of action in ...

Please help me; I’m all alone

When the ship sank, we swam ashore onto a beach, six of us men, and three women who quickly moved away. Conferring amongst ourselves we agreed that we should set off immediately to explore the place and see how best to return home. Even by climbing a tree and squinting into the distance we saw no sign of land or ship anywhere on the sea that surrounded us, nor any sign of life on this little island: no smoke, no huts, nothing. But there were trees all around. It was a bountiful land. Like a gigantic orange vitamin-C the sun sank into the ...
