Stories about Maya Khan

Is Abb Tak’s Uzma Tahir the new Maya Khan?

There’s a new trend catching on – TV aunties raiding your homes with their camera crews and demanding to know who you’re sharing your apartment with. Say ‘cheese’, Pakistan! Uzma Tahir is a woman on a mission. The host of the program ‘Khufia’ on Abb Tak, takes in a deep breath and valiantly nose-dives into Karachi’s sordid core where men dress like women. It’s an exhaustive, but fruitful, day’s work of ramming her microphone into people’s faces and inquiring, “Ap Naila ke saath kab se hein? Tumhein pata hai ke who kaun hai? Khuwaja sera? Mujhe toh pata hai yeh khuwaja sera hai” (How long have ...

Hrithik Roshan and Suzanne Khan split: Get your nose out of my business!

Remember the last argument that you had with your husband? The one in which you were both on the way to a party and you had to hurriedly blink back your tears and wipe away the mascara streaks running down your face? You had almost reached the venue and you had both been arguing the entire way. But what happened as you made your way into your friend’s house? Your husband put his arm around your waist, you both donned your ‘we-are-so-happy smiles’ and you made the rounds as if there was not a wrinkle in your seemingly perfect married ...

The Supreme Court will now decide TV channel content too?

As if we have not had enough of moral policing from our mumanis and chachis, teachers and professors, co-workers and bosses, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry decided to take action on behalf of a letter written by former head honcho of Jamaat-e-Islami Qazi Hussain Ahmed and Justice (retd) Wajihuddin. This action is against obscenity aired on TV channels. Justice Chaudhry believes that TV channels are spreading vulgarity and called PEMRA officials to the court to admonish them. According to the news reports, the Chief Justice cited some offensive programmes and advertisements and said that one finds it difficult to watch them with family. However, I ...

A tribute to Talat Hussain’s ‘supra-liberal’ media

It’s a beautiful morning in supra-liberal Pakistan. I wake up with a broad grin plastered across my pseudo-liberal face, as I head downstairs to the living room. I skim through the headlines on the Urdu newspaper: it’s all about the damage being inflicted upon us by religious radicalism, along with high praise for the United States and its efforts in combating it. I turn on the television. They’re playing a documentary called “Veena Malik: The Pride of Pakistan”, in which various TV personalities take turns commending Ms Malik, the apotheosis of modelling industry, the paragon of courage, and a gleaming ...

TV shows: It’s not just sex that sells, religion does too

A main feature of Ramazan in Pakistan is the surge of sehr and iftar talk shows and television programmes. Audiences, hungry for food, and thirsty for Da’wah (preaching of Islam), willingly welcome the gimmicky stratagems of the media-walays (media-people) looking to hook and reel us in. To name just a few, this year’s list of programmes features some of Pakistan’s most jaanay-maanay celebrities (well-known celebrities); a sportsman, an TV host slash regional park morality police, and an actress, model and an item girl, all in one personality (yes I know you know exactly who I speak of). By bringing in Pakistan’s most notorious and/or well-known celebrities, networks have tapped into a ...

Maya Khan and the barbaric arrogance of fundamentalism

It is apparently not enough anymore to discriminate against religious minorities in our laws or to attack their houses of worship or places of residence in random, unprovoked acts of violence. People like Maya Khan now want to use the few remaining religious minorities in the country for entertainment too. Many publications have rightly pointed out that the televised conversion of a Hindu man named Sunil to Islam was an act that was incredibly insensitive to religious minorities in a country where forced conversions and abductions are far too common. But I have a far deeper problem with just the ...

Ramazan with Veena Malik: Lord forgive us all

A heavy voice, amid fire raging on the screen (illustrating hell fire) alerts us that it’s that time of the year when we all have to seek forgiveness from God– and just when I was about to recite Astaghfar in my heart, Veena Malik appeared and disrupted my connection with the Divine. I shook my head in disbelief and continued to watch Veena Malik address me in a cobalt-blue kameez shalwar. “Main hoon Veena Malik, is Ramazan main keroongi aapke saath … apne aur aapke gunaaho’n ka astaghfar.” (I am Veena Malik, and this Ramazan I, along with you, will be seeking ...

Social Media Mela or Twitterati kitty party?

Yesterday afternoon, I was at the Social Media Mela, (better known as SocMM12) at Avari Towers, Karachi. As I neared the hall where the particular session I had to attend was to be held, I heard they were running late ─ and fashionably so. When I first saw #SocMM12 trending on Twitter, I immediately thought of guns (let’s blame rap songs on the radio for this). When I found out what it really was and I took a look at the event guide online, I made a biased assumption; this wasn’t going to really be a broad-horizoned ‘social media’ mela; ...

Meher-Mubashir: Time to re-visit ethics

Whether it is the Maya Khan episode or Shaheen Sehbai’s interview on YouTube, journalists have managed to hog all the attention for themselves and have made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Now, we have the Meher-Lucman video which is trending on Twitter, and is being passed around on multiple social media forums. Yesterday, a video, titled ‘Malik Riaz Planted Interview with Mehar Bukhari and Mubashir Lucman on Dunya’ was uploaded by a user named ‘ivestigativereporter’. This jolted many people who watched in shock as the interview between Meher Bokhari, Mubashir Lucman and Malik Riaz seemed entirely scripted. It all started ...
