Zero: Too many flaws and not enough ink

Newly released Zero, starring Shah Rukh Khan (SRK), Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in lead roles, reminded me strongly of Shahid Kapoor’s Mausam. Similar to Mausam, Zero has a strong premise.  However, the 20 subplots it takes to explore this subject in a lengthy 165-minutes narrative makes it a tedious watch. It is a film with a good heart but the body of the film has a more acute case of cerebral palsy than the lead character of the film does. Zero has a misleading title. It should have been called six. Or seven. This is the number of stories the ...

I would rather gouge my eyes out than watch the absurdity that is Namastey England

It was back in 2007 that cinemagoers were treated to the classic that was Namastey London, a movie that not only served as a commentary on Indian patriotism and colonialism, but did so in a hilarious and touching manner. A romantic comedy and a family drama at the same time, the movie was a huge hit at the box office and also gave rise to the notion that Katrina Kaif could act. Although we now know that to not be true, thanks to Namastey London, we temporarily believed it was possible. Akshay Kumar, however, was the life and soul ...

In an age of weight watchers and surgeries, Vidya Balan proves that it is talent that counts

The Filmfare Awards 2018 took place recently, and Vidya Balan surprised no one by winning the award for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Female). No one that has seen Vidya act will question or challenge her win, but the award means more than just another win for a deserving actor. This is indeed a big win for the art and the artist, but it is also a big win for women and for body positivity. At a time where most Bollywood actresses are judged and appreciated more for their looks and their bodies than they are for their performances, this ...

Why are female celebrities asked shallow and personal questions but the men are asked professional ones?

I’m not going to lie, I’m a fan of red-carpet events. The pretty dresses, the sparkly jewellery, the glitz, the glamour, the hair and makeup – I love it all. Does that make me a bad feminist? I really hope not. I wholeheartedly believe in a woman’s right and choice to celebrate her looks, her body and her sexuality. But at the same time, it also sets me off when the media reduces a woman to merely that – just a pretty face. At the trailer launch for her upcoming film, Mahira Khan was questioned by a few reporters regarding those controversial pictures with Ranbir Kapoor. ...

A Bolly-musical combo doesn’t sound quite appealing, but Jagga Jasoos proves otherwise

After three long years in production, Anurag Basu’s directorial Jagga Jasoos finally saw the light of day. First things first, this film is different from other Bollywood movies because it is a musical. Bollywood and musicals doesn’t sound quite right, but Jagga Jasoos proves otherwise. With Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif as the main cast, it created quite a buzz even before the promotions began. This was partly because of the delay and also due to Kapoor and Kaif’s publicised break up. The film, which has opened to mixed reviews, earned over Rs8.57 crore on its first day. Jagga Jasoos features Kapoor as Jagga, a young boy on a quest to find his ...
