Banning one bowler after the other, what is PCB doing wrong?

Yet another dejecting news story regarding one of our new off-spinners, Bilal Asif, was published recently. Bilal was reported for suspect action during the third ODI match against Zimbabwe in Harare. The series ended on a high note for our cricket team, but for Bilal, the series cast a gloomy shadow over his future career growth. Thirty-year-old Bilal performed exceptionally well in his second ODI match against Zimbabwe, during which he bagged five wickets and contributed 38 runs as an opener, which helped Pakistan sail towards a seven wicket win. These statistics proved that Bilal is a force to reckon ...

If the spot-fixing trio can get a second chance, why can’t ‘The Magician’?

So what if Saeed Ajmal was ranked as the number one player in the ODI format by the International Cricket Council (ICC) or if he became the quickest Pakistani to take 100 Test wickets, this did not stop the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) from treating him as shabbily as possible for his banned action which robbed him off his brilliant form. Photo: AFP This sends out a strong message to the existing as well as the upcoming off-spinners; don’t get your actions banned. Great going, PCB! There is a saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will ...

What a perfect Pakistan Super League could be like

Pakistan Super League (PSL) gets rolling in February next year. PSL promises to be a great Pakistani sporting spectacle, with competitive cricket and the entire sixes-for-fun (T20) aura. However, one may think that Qatar’s Doha is not the ideal venue for PSL, due to it’bs lack of knowledge on cricket. PSL filling our stadia in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar would have been fascinating indeed. However, our misleading global image prevents the likes of Warners and Gayles from touring Pakistan. Keeping reality in sight, which includes the unavailability of grounds in UAE in February, we would have to be content with Qatar for starters. ...

Is it justified for the Pakistan cricket team to not welcome the trio?

The ban of Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt has not ended yet. In the eyes of the ICC, the trio can play international cricket, after considering their offences serious enough to ban them for five years. Eventually, it comes down to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to select them in domestic or international cricket, or both. But who takes the final decision? The chairman, the selection committee or the captains of all formats? Or the player who coached them in the 2010 England tour? Or the prime minister himself, who is also the patron-in-chief? Or the head of PCB executive committee? The decision has found ...

Are ICC and PCB bowing down to BCCI, again?

It was in June 2011 when the International Cricket Council (ICC) made certain amendments to their rules. These rules clearly stated that cricket boards which are found to have political interferences will be sacked immediately. This rule was introduced to free the sport from undue government influence. However, the question remains, where was this rule when it came to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)? Well, had it been applied then, Indo-Pak cricketing ties would have never been in jeopardy. BCCI tends to cross its limits and continues to bring political interests in the field of sports. At first, they suspended cricket ties with Pakistan after terrorist attacks in Mumbai in 2008, and have ...

We need the old Junaid Khan back

On the eve of the 2011 Cricket World Cup, when Sohail Tanvir sustained an injury and the 21-year-old Junaid Khan was included in the squad without any experience in international cricket, a few eyebrows were raised on his selection, but selectors thought that in Junaid, the left-arm quick, they had found a replacement for Muhammad Amir, who was at that time banned from international cricket for five years.  Having been partnered with Amir at the 2008 Under 19 (U19) Cricket World Cup, there was no doubt about Junaid’s talent, and while announcing his selection, the Chief Selector, Iqbal Qasim said, “He ...

Is PCB capable of hosting an IPL-level league in Pakistan?

While Nasim Ashraf sowed the seeds for Pakistan Super League (PSL) earlier in 2008, Zaka Ashraf watered them, and enabled them to grow further in January 2013. Not only that, he also spent millions of rupees to develop it. However, every time he would get closer to launching the league, something would go wrong and the dream of having Pakistan’s own league would shatter away. This time, Najam Sethi and Shahryar Khan have revived plans of restructuring the league and launching it again in 2016. But this is being done without a concrete vision in mind. There were quite a few serious steps taken ...
