We thought Big Little Lies couldn’t get any better! Enters Meryl Streep for season 2

Two years after the misadventures of the Monterey Five earned Big Little Lies massive critical acclaim, the series is all set to return to HBO for a second season this summer, with a cast that now includes yet another Oscar winner. Meryl Streep has joined the star-studded ensemble that already features Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz and Laura Dern, and we are clearly about to experience, yet again, just how interesting and compelling strong, powerful women can be in leading roles. Westworld is everyone’s favourite show, but does anyone really get it?

It might sound a tad bit clichéd, but I don’t usually judge people for their choices in life. No matter how bizarre, absurd or quirky these personal preferences are, you wouldn’t find yours truly judging them. However, there is one major exception to this golden rule of mine. I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you like or want. If you are looking for an opinion from an industry oldie, I can tell you I am not your man. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over ...

Intense and daring, Al Pacino’s ‘Paterno’ brings to light the aftermath of a child sex abuse scandal

The sporting world has been rocked by several scandals of late, with controversies such as doping and match-fixing in various fields making headlines around the globe. One of the most appalling episodes, however, which shocked fans of American football, came to the fore in 2011 when news broke of the Penn State child sex abuse scandal. Former defensive coordinator, Jerry Sandusky, was indicted for child molestation spanning over a period of a decade-and-a-half, whereas long-time head coach of the team, Joe Paterno, was accused of being involved in the alleged cover-up of the crimes. The latter is now the subject ...

Game of Thrones S07-E04: A Stark reunion, an epic battle and unfinished business – what more could one want?

Recently, I read that some fans and critics were complaining about the seventh season of Game of Thrones (GoT) being too rushed. There have also been complaints stating that the show is more focused on displays rather than character development. But I think it is safe to assume that all these negative reviews will die down once the said individuals watch the fourth episode. This week’s offering had some touching reunions and jaw-dropping moments. Some might argue otherwise, but for me, this was the best GoT episode so far. It surpasses all previous GoT standards and sets new benchmarks for the show itself and other shows as well. The ...

Remembering my father, Salmaan Taseer, and his love for pranks on his 73rd birthday

At last I’m able to laugh about my father, Salmaan Taseer, and remember the good times without anger and sadness. More than six years after his death, I found myself at a dinner table with the company coiled in helpless laughter over my Abba’s stories. As today would be his 73rd birthday, I’m happy to share his light-hearted side and humour. Abba had the most wicked sense of humour. Friends, relatives or his children were not immune from his tricks, pranks and one-liners, and all who knew him will attest to his fun and vivacious side. He always managed to spontaneously highlight the comical side ...

The Night Of is the best wake-up call our TV industry needs

HBO’s The Night Of  proved to be the most important summer show on television. The very transformation of the co-lead Riz Ahmed’s Nasir Khan as a clean-cut kid turned drug mule is a perfect example of why everything needs a little push. Oh, and also when two of Hollywood’s most likable ladies, Jessica Chastain and Elizabeth Banks, are raving about something on TV, we should take notice. This is where the whole ‘wrong guy at the wrong time in the wrong place’ worked so well in the show. Imagine the chaos we’ve seen in 2016 in Pakistan. After some terror attacks and the murders of Amjad Sabri, Qandeel Baloch amongst others, one would ...

The latest Game of Thrones episode leaves many seeing red

We all know the red woman. Some hate her, others are transfixed by the fiery curls, but the one thing all Game of Thrones fans can agree upon is that she oozes sex appeal and is usually up to no good. Having left many a mouth hanging over the years, the very end of the first episode has to be her most jaw-dropping moment. However, it may not be for the reasons you might think.   I was personally expecting a lot more from the first episode considering all the hype created around it. So without giving an spoilers to the current episode, lets ...

Why Game of Thrones is infinitely better than Grey’s Anatomy

This post is for all those who like to compare Game of Thrones with Grey’s Anatomy. I would like to correct such people and let them know that no matter what happens, Grey’s can never be as amazing as GOT. And here are my reasons. Although I am no longer a fan of Grey’s, I must admit the show was one of my guilty pleasures at one point in time. Being the only brother of four older sisters, something peculiar like this was bound to happen; it could’ve been a lot worse I suppose, but oh well. I remember the show ...

Bombay Velvet is all style and no substance

Bombay Velvet is a noir crime drama set during the 50s-60s era. It is directed by Anurag Kashyap, the man behind movies which have evolved into cult classics, such as Gangs of Wasseypur, Ugly, Dev D and Black Friday. Bombay Velvet’s protagonist is Johnny Balraj (Ranbir Kapoor), an ambitious street hustler-cum-boxer, fighting in the pits for the adrenaline rush. The major part of the movie pivots around the rise and fall of Balraj, from the obscure mediocrity of street hustling to becoming a manager of the most happening club in town, of course known as Bombay Velvet. How he traverses that journey should be seen by the audience themselves. [caption id="" ...

Marvel’s Daredevil sets new standards for TV shows

Marvel has been on a bit of a roll recently, and by recently I mean the last seven years. While Marvel has gone from strength to strength on the big screen, the same cannot be said for their small screen ventures, and after the middling Agents of Shield and their work in progress, that is Agent Carter, Marvel is all set to expand its television universe as well. Marvel and Netflix have planned to release four stand-alone super-hero shows in the next three to four years. The shows are Daredevil, AKA Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and then a team of all of them in ‘The Defenders.’ Daredevil is ...
