Lighting candles for the Delhi gang rape changes nothing

I’ve been following, yet intentionally trying to ignore this entire circus surrounding me. People have been demanding  justice, in terms of the death penalty, for those six rapists’ for weeks now. Close friends, relatives, acquaintances have been debating, protesting, discussing, showing anger blah dee blah. Amidst all of this, I fail to understand a few very simple things. Have we been completely blind to the endless rape and assault cases that are reported in the paper every single day for decades? Are we oblivious to the slave-like state of Indian women outside the 1% city girls? How does the torture of one girl become ...

Can rape be classified as ‘big’ or ‘small’?

A week after Ajmal Kasab – the gunman guilty of complicity in the 2008 Mumbai attacks –was hanged in November 2012, a friend from Mumbai and I were discussing the pros and cons of capital punishment. While we both agreed that hanging a person who threatened the security of the state was just, our stance on capital punishment itself was opposite: I was in favour of death sentences, while my friend was against them. When the discussion turned towards rape, things got complicated. “Depends on whether the rape case is big or small,” said my friend. In all fairness, I know he wasn’t speaking literally but at the ...

Hear me now, as I scream from heaven

I, Nirbhaya Damini, have left my earthly abode. After fighting hard for two weeks, my mortal body has surrendered to grievous injuries, inflicted on it, by six human beasts. I must also tell you that as I had lived an ordinary, uneventful life for all ...

Delhi gang rape and the unanswered questions

A 23-year-old paramedical student, along with her male friend goes out for a movie on a leisurely Sunday evening (December 16, 2012) in South Delhi (arguably, one of the most “posh” areas of New Delhi, and therefore ,the safest.) They come out at around 8:30pm from the theatre, take an auto till Munirka (another posh locality.) While they look for another auto to take the girl home, a private bus stops by. The driver asks them where they are headed to and says that he is going in the same direction. The unsuspecting duo board the bus. There are various versions of ...

Raped on Christmas

A 12-year-old Christian girl was gang raped repeatedly, forced to convert to Islam and was then married to one of her attackers in Lahore. I got to know about this case a few days ago, and since then, I have not been able to overcome feelings of disgust and sorrow. I have been unable to sleep. An FIR was filed against unknown people on January 5, 2011 – FIR No 18/11, to the Factory Area Police Station, district Shaikhupura, Lahore. When I called the concerned police station to make inquiries the sub-inspector was hesitant to talk about the incident. However, when I strictly asked him ...
