Game of Thrones: In season 6, Jon Snow’s death is inconsequential

A couple of weeks ago, Game of Thrones (GoT) released the trailer for its sixth season on YouTube and, for those 1:41 minutes, the entire world ceased to exist for diehard GoT fans. The excitement and exhilaration that fans had been harbouring since the beginning of this year (and when the season six teaser was released) increased tenfold and I, for one, began marking the calendar for April 24th like the GoT fanatic I am. After the trailer was released, many started speculating as to whether Jon Snow was really dead or if he will be reincarnated by Melisandre, the Red Woman ...

6 things Saudi Arabia and Iran have in common

Saudi Arabia’s long and bitter history with Iran came to a boiling point recently when the Kingdom murdered Shi’ite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr on charges of treason after a farcical trial. For some time, the Saudis had indirectly indicated that Nimr al-Nimr was on Iran’s payroll. The late preacher, a fierce critic of the monarchy, ridiculed these claims. Although Nimr al-Nimr was a Saudi national, Iran strongly condemned the execution. Later, a Saudi embassy in Tehran was vandalised by Persians angrier than the ones defied by 300 Spartans. That Iran reacted so strongly did nothing to disprove any Nimr al-Nimr ...

If A’ level schools from Karachi were houses from Game of Thrones

I am sure that anyone who has seen the Game of Thrones would love to know what house they would belong to had they been part of the series. But what if we lived in a world where houses were based on the A’ level colleges that people attended – or were aspiring to attend? How would that work? After a lot of research and analytical conversations with alumni from the top ten A’ level institutes in Karachi, I was able to grasp a sound, albeit limited, understanding of the kind of students who studied at these particular schools. And in GOT language, ...

Is Jon Snow going to die?

Before I begin, let me clarify that I have not read any of the Game of Thrones books and therefore, the theories provided here might seem a bit farfetched to those who have read the books. However, having said that, the incredulous roller-coaster journey that George RR Martin and the makers of this show have taken us through has made me believe that anything is truly possible. So in light of all that, here is a list of 10 fan theories ranging from the most plausible to the downright insane, that discuss this brilliant show in all its shades: 1) R ...

Understanding rape through the Game of Thrones

Warning: For those of you, who have yet to watch the new season of Game of Thrones, be prepared for spoilers. Or stop reading.   ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————- I’ve been following the controversy about the Game of Thrones rape scene, which troubled a lot of women when it was aired this past Sunday. In the scene, Sansa Stark is raped by the sadistic psychopath Ramsey Bolton, while Theon Greyjoy is invited to watch. You don’t see Sansa or Ramsey, but you hear everything, while the camera focuses on Theon as he weeps. This, women have said, is unacceptable. Rape should not be used as a plot point. It’s gratuitous. ...

Why Game of Thrones is infinitely better than Grey’s Anatomy

This post is for all those who like to compare Game of Thrones with Grey’s Anatomy. I would like to correct such people and let them know that no matter what happens, Grey’s can never be as amazing as GOT. And here are my reasons. Although I am no longer a fan of Grey’s, I must admit the show was one of my guilty pleasures at one point in time. Being the only brother of four older sisters, something peculiar like this was bound to happen; it could’ve been a lot worse I suppose, but oh well. I remember the show ...

Why I will never forgive Shonda Rhimes for killing Derek Shepherd

The previous episode of Grey’s Anatomy had hints that this may happen, but I said to myself that Shonda Rhimes, the writer, cannot do this. Meredith has already been through way too much. Name any tragedy and mishap in the world and she has been through it. Mom had Alzheimer’s, dad was an alcoholic. Her best friend George died. The plane crash killed her sister Lexie and friend Mark Sloan and mangled Derek’s hand, and he was unable to do surgeries for months. Before that, in 2010, Derek was shot in the chest. And Meredith nearly died so many times ...

Karan Johar takes on GoT with ‘Kabhi Games, Kabhi Thrones’

Social media is full of news of Game of Thrones being adapted as an Indian television show. Am I the only one who thinks that the plot lends itself perfectly for a Bollywood movie instead of a TV show? I would pay good money to see a Karan Johar production titled ‘Kabhi Games, Kabhi Thrones’. The story would begin with Ned Stark and Robert Baratheon riding together on a motorbike merrily singing a song together. The evil sautayli ma (step-mother) would ask Jon Snow to be banished from the kingdom, and the Stark jayedaad (inheritance). Snow’s storyline would become even more contentious in a Bollywood setting with the word ‘bastard’ repeated multiple times with the echo ...

GoT Season 5 Episode 1 brings death to King’s Landing

By now you would (read: should) have seen the first episode of Game of Thrones (GoT) season five. Despite leaving us for months at a time, GoT has a way of sucking you back into the world of Westeros every single season. Even when our favourite characters are (wrongfully) killed, they are replaced with new characters inhabiting different worlds, and just like life, the story goes on; Vlar Morghulis. This season began with the first flashback scene of the season. HBO show producers David Beinoff and DB Weiss were sternly against any flashbacks scenes. However, by putting the scene at the ...
