Stories about Donald Trump

Mohammed bin Salman openly calling Khamenei “Hitler” is proof that money talks and bloodshed walks

US President Donald Trump’s cozy relationship with Saudi Arabia makes little sense in its recent historical context, given this is the same Trump who once accused Saudi Arabia of committing the 9/11 attacks. This is also the same Trump who rose to the presidential throne on an anti-Muslim platform, which is intriguing because Saudi Arabia is of course not only the birth place of Islam, but also a country which exports radical Islam as though it were a commodity. However, if there is one thing Trump hates more than dark-skinned refugees, it’s Iran, and this is the crux of the newfound Trump-Saudi alliance. Of ...

Considering torture is illegal as per US law, how is a brutal torturer appointed as the new CIA chief?

The CIA occupies an almost mythic space in the minds of those of us who watch Hollywood movies. Time and again, we come across movies that show a direct link between the CIA and various atrocities around the globe. Movies such as the Bourne series and the Mission: Impossible series bubble up plenty of theories regarding how the CIA operates. Specifically for Pakistan and the Muslim world in general, such movies are proof for drawing room analysts that the CIA has a one-point agenda: defeat the Muslims. Movies like Zero Dark Thirty showed a heroic account of the CIA ...

Will Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un finally take their thumbs off the nuclear button?

Much of the world is still coming to grips with the news that US President Donald Trump has agreed to meet with leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Kim Jong Un. Fortune described the news as being “nothing short of a miracle”, which aptly describes how the rest of us, who do not want a nuclear holocaust, feel. That being said, it must be asked, what is behind Trump’s intention of meeting with Kim, and why now, at this particular juncture in history? It wasn’t too long ago that reports were emerging that the US was secretly considering a direct military strike on North ...

Arming teachers will only create a greater mess, one the US cannot afford

It’s a strange time in our history. America is making the news for the worst of reasons. I look back and wonder at times as to what happened to my adopted country. I look back at the time when the news headlines were dominated by the likes of Sammy Sosa, Alex Rodriguez, Mark McGwire and Michael Jordan, to name a few. Granted that the social and political buzz and the emotions were still high at that time, but this kind of pressure wasn’t felt all over the body politic. Today, just turn the television on and there’s always something crazy ...

Is Donald Trump the first real illegitimate president of the US?

Washington is perpetually buzzing with activity. It’s been like that ever since Donald Trump descended into the Oval Office. However, this time around, the buzz is a bit of a different sort. Deputy Attorney General, Rod Rosenstein, read through the expansive indictment charge list against 13 Russian individuals, three Russian companies and one American last Friday. It became nothing but self-evident that Trump and his cronies wittingly or “unwittingly” sold out the 2016 US presidential election to the Russians in the most callous and reckless manner. According to the 37-page special, counsel Bob Mueller produced indictment that the Russian-run, pro-Kremlin, St Petersburg-based, Internet Research Agency, manipulated ...

30 mass shootings, 18 school shootings in 2018 alone – courtesy of the NRA and its puppet, Donald Trump

The recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida in the United States brought forth another round of debates and blames. The parents blamed the school for not taking pre-emptive actions towards a student that showed signs of violence. The school blamed the local law enforcement agencies for not doing enough to provide security and not following up on the tip they received. The local law enforcement agencies complained of having their hands tied up due to federal policies. Collectively though, the community as a whole came together to blame the National Rifle Association (NRA) for pushing lax gun regulations. It is frightening that the ...

Why nobody wants to admit to the real reasons behind American mass shootings

There was a “mass casualty event” at an American high school a couple of days ago that took the lives of 17 people, including students, teachers and staff, and I’m unfortunately not surprised at this point. Mass shootings have become commonplace in America as of late, and after every incident, the political blame game spins round and round, even before we send out our redundant “thoughts and prayers”. “We have to ban guns. No, we need more guns. We need to put more police in public places – and even in schools to deter shooters. We need to ban gun-free zones. We ...

NA-154 was a litmus test for PTI – perhaps Imran Khan should stop relying on patronage politics

While the fraudulent Sharif clan haven’t recovered from the aftermath of the Panama verdict and are still facing National Accountability Bureau (NAB) cases, the battle of NA-154 by-poll has ended in a mammoth victory for Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). To some extent, this result is not surprising. The trend of previous by-polls suggests that people typically prefer to vote for the ruling party. However, victory of a new candidate against Ali Tareen is a major setback for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). This election was a litmus test for PTI, particularly for Jahangir Khan Tareen, whose politics was on stake after disqualification from the apex court. After disqualification, many ...

Will a black president make America great again?

After this year’s Golden Globe Awards, an overwhelming number of tweets and op-eds acclaimed Oprah Winfrey as a possible candidate for the 2020 US Presidential Election. It was indeed a justified reaction to her powerful acceptance speech, which sounded strong, optimistic and very presidential. Not to be outdone by a woman, President Donald Trump immediately responded to this media reaction by suggesting that while fighting an election against Oprah would be fun, he would beat her. No matter what one’s opinion on the possibility of Oprah 2020, it does bring several questions to mind. Would such a presidency do America ...

The US never did and still doesn’t know what it is doing in Afghanistan

Almost a week on since I wrote on the (im)probability of peace talks with the Taliban, Afghanistan has not only seethed with violence but has further drifted into the abyss of terror. The country’s misery has continued in 2018 as a spate of major terror attacks, especially in the heavily-guarded capital of Kabul, has left its people reeling with agony, terror and fear. In the latest of these attacks, 11 soldiers were killed when five Islamic State (IS) militants attacked the Marshal Fahim National Defense University (MFNDU) on January 29th. This was the third major attack in just over a week, with the ...
