The Angry Birds Movie: Can it slingshot over your expectations?

For quite a few years now, young viewers, and adults alike, have been playing Angry Birds on smartphones – crashing wacky birds in buildings and killing the green-coloured pigs. So you can just imagine how the excitement obviously doubles up when a movie based on their all-time favourite video game comes out!  I watched The Angry Birds Movie with the same enthusiasm with which I score points in the Angry Birds game and it did not disappoint me. The movie does have all the elements depicted in the game and once having played the game, one can easily relate to the movie. Brought ...

Watching The Jungle Book is one of 2016’s ‘bare necessities’

We all remember Disney’s animated movie, The Jungle Book (1967), which added another feather in Disney’s cap of achievements. Disney recreates the magic nearly 49 years later with the remake and release of The Jungle Book, featuring live-action animation, inclusive of high quality visual effects. The digitally animated characters and jungle make this movie a breath-taking masterpiece. The same story is narrated in a manner that would not have been possible half a century ago. The CGI rendered talking animals will take the viewers by surprise; they are larger than life and add meaning to the live-action adaption, which tells the story of Mowgli ...

The Force is sound asleep (and snoring too!)

Every now and then I am asked to critique a movie and I am happy to oblige. Because good, bad or average, these films that I am asked to evaluate are nonetheless cinema. However when I was asked to review a Disney merchandise advertisement masquerading as a cinematic endeavour, I was a little perplexed. My first instinct was to politely refuse, considering I wasn’t being paid by Disney to write hack reviews. I mean, how else could you justify all the rave reviews that this seventh episode of the Star Wars franchise is garnering? Let’s get this clear right from the ...

Hotel Transylvania 2: Better and wittier than its prequel!

Hotel Transylvania 2 is the sequel to the Hotel Transylvania (2012) which is the story of Dracula (Adam Sandler) and his daughter, Mavis, who falls in love with a human. Where in the first part Mavis (Selena Gomez) gave her heart to Jonathan (Andy Samberg), they are seen happily married in the sequel. The sequel, too, has a strong plot, if not stronger. Dracula is now not afraid of Jonny, the human, for he has wed Dracula’s daughter. Even though the conflict between Dracula and the humans is now over, Hotel Transylvania 2 raises another concern between Dracula and his grandson, Dennis (Asher ...

10 reactions students have before the CIE results, explained through Disney

It is that time of the year again, when the world is about to come crashing down and you would rather go into hibernation than face the inevitable. No, I am not talking about the apocalypse. I am focusing on something much worse – the CIE results. This year, the fated day befalls on August 11th, and for all O’ and A’ level students who appeared for the May/June 2015 exams, the countdown has already begun. Since I have gone through the same countdown during my time, I can empathise with a lot of students who will face the kraken tomorrow. And in order ...

Is Minions subtly promoting misogyny?

Disclaimer: This is not a movie review, as I’m not a movie critic. It started with the need to have minions at my beck and call 24/7. Never ending work, without a break, and lack of readily available home help had led to a frustrating situation. Although I was desirous of minions, in reality it was highly unlikely to happen. So I relegated myself to the virtual world of minions. I’m not a huge fan of Disney-Pixar’s animated movies. This time, however, my kids ensured that I would accompany them to watch the latest ‘cartoon’. Not having watched ‘Despicable Me’ prior ...

Tomorrowland: A riveting ride into the future, with a twist

Tomorrowland begins with the following line, “This is a story about the future and the future can be scary”. Certainly not what the audience was expecting to hear. The storyline which unfolds compels the viewers to put on their thinking hats in order to piece the puzzle together, while at the same time being awestruck by the brilliant and sleek futuristic world of Tomorrowland, rendered by computer graphics.    Directed by Brad Bird, the movie is set during 1964. However, Tomorrowland is a futuristic place where anyone from that time can enter this realm through a certain process. Frank Walker (George Clooney), full of ...
