5 moments of pure magic that prove the Pakistan cricket team is a force to be reckoned with

I mean, let’s be real. The Pakistan cricket team has never been the team that played normally, so just limiting Pakistan’s miraculous wins to five times is a bit difficult. These impossible wins are nothing less than a magic trick, where the magician’s assistant is in the box and cut in half but still manages to escape alive. Defeating England at the Oval? The magician’s assistant in the box. That Sharjah Six? We just cut the box in half. The World Cup of 1992? Quarters now! That T20 World Cup of 2009? Seriously, please stop! That Whitewash of Australia? Assistant is still alive!! But these are moments everyone remembers, the ...

Are we really ready for Zimbabwe?

Pakistan announced its T20 squad today with former captain Shoaib Malik and star all-rounder Umar Akmal making a comeback. Muhammad Sami, another lost tale of the Pakistan cricket biopic, was given a chance to showcase his pace program against Zimbabwe – the first team to visit Pakistan since 2009 for a T20 two-match series and an ODI three-match series. The whole series, from its very start till now, has faced a lot of controversies, contradictions and confusions. It is a new beginning for Pakistan cricket but it has come after a lot of struggles. The Zimbabwe Cricket Union’s advance team visited Lahore to ...

Pakistan vs South Africa: It’s time for some smart cricket, boys

Pakistan is in a decent run of form and finds itself sitting not-so-pretty at the fourth spot in the World Cup. In relation to the Pakistan-South Africa match, which is to take place tomorrow, countless people in Pakistan believe that the team is not capable of winning against the Porteas, the only side in the history of the game to score 400 plus in two consecutive innings. Only the top four teams will make it to the quarterfinals and looking at the ranking right now, Pakistan either needs to move up the rank or maintain their fourth position to qualify. However, there is a lot ...

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka: Team green is breaking records and flying high!

Many young cricket fans in Pakistan regret being deprived of watching the great moments of Pakistani cricket live in Sharjah. Whether it was Aqib Javed’s seven-wicket haul against India in 1991 or the great six of Javed Miandad – these youngsters missed these classic moments which were later discontinued due to the ban on the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. But this regret was wiped out on January 20, 2013 when the Pakistan cricket team added to the countless memories of the Sharjah ground by achieving yet another milestone when they gave birth to a new world record in Test cricket by chasing a target of 300 ...

Our team’s unpredictability is the opposition’s cruellest enemy!

By now, the Sachin Tendulkar farewell Test and retirement euphoria has, considerably, died down and the Pakistan cricket are currently being tested by the Lankan Lions, on their desert ‘home’ tour of Pakistan. Although things have started to, somewhat, come back on track for the Pakistan team, by returning the South Africans a favour of their desert carnage by beating them fair and square in the short return visit to the Protea Land, their ruthlessness and consistency needs to be maintained and for that the seniors would certainly have to show the way. The body language of the team that looked down and out of sort in their ...

PCB: The mother of all evil in Pakistani cricket

Although Pakistan’s cricket team has seen victories, cricket in Pakistan seems to be on a downward spiral. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken many steps including the hiring of a foreign coach, but all steps taken by the board have failed to boost the team’s performance. Pakistan’s Bilawal Bhatti (2nd L) celebrates the win with teammates during the first ODI cricket match between Pakistan and South Africa at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town on November 24, 2013. Photo: AFP In my view, this decline can be attributed to weak personalities regularly appointed to run the PCB, who ...

Misbahul Haq: Will Pakistan’s unsung hero be able to lead us against South Africa?

Pakistan is due to take South Africa on in a highly anticipated combat on UAE soil with an aim to mend their fences this time. The hopes for this would have been much higher they had whitewashed a comparatively weaker opponent that was on the verge of crumbling before it somehow managed to thrash Pakistan severely. Yup, I am talking about Zimbabwe. But that is all done and dusted, and yet we blame Misbahul Haq… God knows why. When we can keep the captain of the team in the limelight it is unfair to snub the people in the background of the ...

Younis and Afridi, do us a favour and never come back!

The euphoria in the air was palpable. The Pakistan cricket team had just wrapped up a historic 3-0 series whitewash over the much-fancied and star-studded English side, buoyant after their Ashes triumph, and were looking to affirm their status as the number one Test team in the world with a successful tour of Asia. The ghosts of ‘that’ painful English tour two years prior had finally been exorcised; the upcoming ODI and T20 series seemed a mere formality. The Pakistan team had always been more comfortable in the limited over formats, and the downtrodden English team was there for the ...

Is it really time for Dav Whatmore to go?

Pakistan’s head coach, Dav Whatmore has suffered severe criticism at the hands of former players and administrators. The former captain, Moin Khan recently showed his dismay at the performance of the national team in the Test series against South Africa. Furthermore, this has opened up the debate on whether we need a foreign coach at all. Although this is a crucial topic, I will focus on the calls for Whatmore’s sacking. I disagree on the timing of these comments. While we drown ourselves in misery, it should not be forgotten that the tour is not over. Pakistan has yet to play a ...

Have Whatmore and our selectors failed us?

If the Pakistan Test team was a stock, and Dav Whatmore was a chairman of the board, the stock price would have fallen through the floor and Whatmore would have been replaced. If the PCB selection committee was the board of directors, they would be fending off angry shareholders and most likely in danger of losing their seats as well. Unfortunately, the Pakistan Cricket Board has no shareholders to answer to. It’s been one year since Dav Whatmore took over, and the same goes for the selection committee. The company has gone bankrupt. What happened in South Africa underlines the fact ...
