Excessive and exhausting, The Lego Movie 2 is a worn-out version of its hilarious original

The Lego Movie (2014) was one of those films based on an idea that was never expected to work. After all, what was this going to be? A feature-length Lego commercial? However, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller who brought a lot of their signature style and inventiveness to the film made sure this wasn’t the case. And The Lego Movie ended up being a massive success, meaning a sequel was always in the offing. Five years and two spin-offs later, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part has finally arrived. The sequel retains pretty much all of the original ...

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is an action-adventure, but mindless-bore would equally suffice

Back in the early 90s, when the original Jurassic Park first came out, I never got the chance to watch it right away. Make no mistake, this dinosaur galore was the biggest deal in terms of flicks making rounds back then. As a result, for years, I was mocked left, right and centre by dino-fans for missing out on this particular Steven Spielberg masterpiece. To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t in the least bit bothered by my self-imposed failure to give it a watch. But years later, when a younger dino-phile cousin of mine was in town, I finally found myself ...

Only two movies, a Spider-man sequel and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol III, had been announced for phase four, but recently, Kevin Fiege, president of Marvel Studios, while talking to BBC said that the studio was planning to introduce Ms Marvel to the MCU as well, and that the plans to do so were in the works. Ms Marvel aka Kamala Khan is a teenage Pakistani-American superhero. She was first introduced in 2013 as a young girl, who was inspired by ...

Believe the hype: 5 reasons why ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ will meet all your expectations, and then some

The 19th film in the Marvel franchise, Avengers: Infinity War, will begin to put an end to the saga which started a decade ago with 2008’s Iron Man. The movie features all of our favourite superheroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This means the superheroes from all three phases have finally come together to take down the ultimate bad guy, Thanos (Josh Brolin), whose arrival Marvel has been teasing since the very beginning. Infinity War is the longest Marvel movie yet, with a runtime of 160 minutes, but I am not complaining. It’s understandable that a movie with such ...

Dinosaur geeks all over the world held their breaths as the trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was revealed. Because, let’s face it, Jurassic World may have been a commercial jackpot, but at best, it was merely a better Jurassic Park sequel out there, and not much else. In anticipation, those of us who grew up with the original crossed our fingers as the latest movie in the now legendary franchise dropped the last veil. And it was… okay. There were high points, and there were low points. For the uber-invested, here is everything that worked, and everything else that didn’t. The dinosaurs ...

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ just might be the ultimate superhero crossover

“There was an idea to bring together a group of remarkable people, to see if we could become something more. So when they needed us, we could fight the battles that they never could.” In many ways, the opening line in the new trailer for Avengers: Infinity War pretty much sums up everything the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been building towards up till now. After 10 years, everything comes full-circle, so to speak. Photo: Giphy The ever-growing threat of the franchise’s big bad Thanos (Josh Brolin) has finally come to the fore and stopping him would ...

Is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 better than its prequel?

The second iteration in the popular Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and one of the mainstays within the confines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (the 15th film to be exact) is as entertaining, if not more so, than its predecessor. It is directed by James Gunn, who meticulously directed the first movie, ensuring its reign in the box office back in 2014. The ensemble cast that made the first movie amusing and entertaining is back at it with their usual mischief coupled with unorthodox humour and action. It’ll definitely bode well with the audience. The sequel picks up a few months after the ...

Passengers: An absurd cliche of a film

Why do good actors choose bad projects? That is the biggest mystery that runs through Passengers, a clunky sci-fi vehicle that can neither justify nor make the most of the star power at its helm. The film is set aboard the Starship Avalon, an interstellar star-liner that is on a voyage from an overpopulated earth to the colony world of Homestead II. Its 5000 passengers and 258 crew members are in hibernation, and are set to spend 120 years in suspended animation before they are awakened upon reaching their new home. Will Magnificent Seven prove to be a worthy remake?

Hollywood’s obsession with remakes does not seem to be ending any time soon. The least we can hope for is that they at least bring something fresh to the films they are attempting to reinvent. With the fall movie season looming over us, one of the most anticipated films of the season is set to be released towards the end of this month, which actually happens to be a remake of a remake (originality in tinsel-town is in short demand these days); The Magnificent Seven.  Ethan Hawke, Denzel Washington, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung-hun Lee, Chris Pratt, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, ...

Jurassic World: A great reminiscent of the Jurassic Park

Twenty-two years ago, Steven Spielberg broke new ground in the Sci-fi genre with the release of Jurassic Park. Not only was the film a visual-effects game-changer but its likable characters, thrilling and suspenseful action sequences, and that Spielberg-ian sense of adventure made it a timeless classic. The rookie director, Colin Trevorrow, has been entrusted with the immensely difficult job of breathing new life into the hit franchise again, after a long gap of 22 years. As someone who pretty much grew up watching Jurassic Park, I have been, like many others, waiting for this sequel since ages. Needless to say, the mediocre Lost World and the ...
