Amir’s punishment was justified, but has the world been too harsh on Smith and Warner?

The recent ball tampering scandal – SandpaperGate, as it is being colloquially referred to – continues to emanate shockwaves in the cricketing world. Both Steve Smith and David Warner have ended up losing their leadership roles, and have also been banned for one year each. Further, Smith has been declared ineligible for captaining Australia for two years, whereas Warner has been declared the same for life. In addition, both have also been banned from playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL), which will literally burn a hole worth millions in their pockets. While young Cameron Bancroft has also been banned ...

He was a work of perfection and so was his marriage

It was a day just like any other, she opened her eyes to wake up to the same chandelier that dangled from the ceiling, sat right up and looked to her right. An empty bed again, another night he had not come home. She got out of bed, put on her slippers and went to the bathroom. The warm tiles felt good, she could just sit there on the floor all day, she thought. After all, she had so many days to just spare. She quickly undressed to get in the bath and as she did she looked at her ...

Intense and insane, ‘Blackmail’ seems to have all the ingredients to be a real winner

The moment the posters for Irrfan Khan’s upcoming dark comedy Blackmail were released, with the actor wearing a paper bag over his face while he stood bare chested in his boxers, I knew it then and there that we were in for a treat! Khan rarely misses that quality movie mark and the kind of movies he does are always a little different than what Bollywood usually has in stores for us. The trailer of the movie released recently, and as expected, it seems like one hell of a ride. The trailer, with a 150-second runtime, is hilarious and quite intense. Usually, Bollywood ...

If you want to survive in Pakistan, don’t stop at the red light!

A few years back, I stopped at a red light and my car was hit in the rear by a taxi driver. A crowd soon gathered and a traffic policeman came over and blamed me for the accident. “You’re not supposed to stop at traffic signals, even if the light is red,” he said. “You should slow down, look left and right and go across without getting hit, or hitting another car.” “But what about the traffic rules?” I protested. He laughed contemptuously. “Rules are made to be broken. If everyone followed the rules, the country would collapse.” By this time, the crowd was baying for ...

Hello, I am a man and I cheat… on my diet

Hello! I am a man and I cheat on my diet. I cheat on my diet with cheese burgers, kebabs, lamb legs, mutton chops, cheese omelettes, macaroni, pastas, lasagne and deep fries. Sometimes I cheat in the day, sometimes I cheat at night. Sometimes it has been days that I have not cheated, while others I cheat many times a day. There have been incidents where I promised my wife that I am going to an office party involving nothing but salads but have ended up in a posh restaurant eating promiscuously the whole night. Do I feel guilty? Yes, I do! Every time! But there is an animal inside ...

Do rich children even value education anymore?

“But man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” Ernest Hemingway’s words echoed in my mind, while I read about Shah Faisal, son of a samosa vendor from Malakand, who bagged the top spot in the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) examination in FSc computer science. He stood tall and defiant, and refused to give up on his ambition, regardless of his financial shortcomings. Individuals with unwavering courage like Faisal are an embodiment of our belief in the human dignity. Faisal, as it happens, is not a rich prince or the son of a politician, with top schools running after him ...

In the name of Allah

I cheat, I lie, I give up on Him, I don’t even try, I swear, I disobey, I do wrong when I want my way. Then I cover my head, I bow and pray, In the name of Allah.   We smoke, we drink, Go as low as low can sink, We take, we steal, Disregard it as no big deal, Then down on our knees, we bow, we pray, In the name of Allah.   They claim it’s all for Him, in His name, When they kill and they burn, No remorse, no shame, Then they raise their hands, And bow to pray, In the name of ...

Is cheating only physical?

Cheating on a partner or having an affair whilst being in a steady, committed relationship has been an area of interest to people for as long as one can trace back the history of humankind. Since the last decade, social scientists have been trying to understand the phenomenon of online affairs or ‘digital cheating’. Several studies focus on what they call the ‘AAA engine’ of online affairs – Affordability, Accessibility and Anonymity.
