Honda CR-Z or Toyota Prius, which hybrid car should you buy?

Hybrid is a term used to describe a combination of two or more distinctive things, aiming to accomplish a common objective. By this definition, a hybrid car is a fuel-efficient vehicle with two motors – a gasoline-powered motor and an electric motor. The purpose behind combining two kinds of motors is to use their combined strengths and reduce inefficiencies, both in the vehicle as well as in the environment. Hybrid cars are considered better than conventional cars since they are fuel-efficient, require oil changes less frequently and are environment friendly. With fuel prices at an all-time high, most car owners have major concerns over their ...

Wisden All Time best XI: How could you exclude Javed Miandad and Muttiah Muralitharan?

In October, 2013 Wisden, a cricket reference book published annually in UK, marked its 150th anniversary by naming the best Test team of all time. Though the team is a great one and all the pronounced cricket legends are included, some I believe are left out without any valid reasons. The team includes: 1.        Jack Hobbs 2.        W G Grace 3.        Don Bradman (Captain) 4.        Sachin Tendulkar 5.        Vivian Richards 6.        Gary Sobers 7.        Alan Knott 8.       Wasim Akram 9.        Shane Warne 10.    Malcolm Marshall 11.     Sydney Barnes Technically, there is nothing wrong with this team. It is indeed a mighty one, but the selection of Grace over Len Hutton looks more like an honorary one rather ...

They killed my cousin. They killed a 9-year-old’s father.

If I were to believe any of the ‘feel-good, badly-designed’ inspirational quotes that go around cyberspace, I would tell myself that the best things somehow always are. Feel good, badly designed, that is. Why do I say this? Can you imagine seeing someone with their brains splattered across the hospital bed? You probably have not, but I have. Trust me, at that point, you don’t know what to think. You don’t think that it will be okay eventually. You don’t know whether to wail in grief or throw up. That someone happened to be my cousin’s husband. He was only 32-years-old and was the father of two young daughters. Well, at ...

Lahore is the best city in Pakistan!

Every city or town in Pakistan is famous for one thing or the other. However, for us Lahoris, all arguments cease to matter before our simple motto – Lahore Lahore ae (Lahore is Lahore). Here are a few reasons as to why I’d choose Lahore over any other city in Pakistan. Data ki nagri Pakistan is very fortunate that many great sufi saints lived in this part of the world and all our major cities have different shrines. But not many cities have a title like Data ki nagri. The shrine of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh Ali Hajveri brings many to Lahore and keeps many connected to the ...

Don’t lose focus team green, the Proteas are still the best!

Jubilant scenes were witnessed at Abu Dhabi last week, as Pakistan’s cricket enthusiasts had something to cheer about. A convincing seven wicket victory over the Proteas in the first Test is enough to wither the horrors of the Harare upset at the hands of Zimbabwe. The green shirts have always been like that. One bad game, a paranoid batting display and erratic bowling might lead many pundits to question the professional strength of a Pakistani side. Yet, on a different day, the same side may surprise, call it an upset or rising from the dust, or something else, the entire ...

Accepting domestic abuse as a part of daily life

As a Pakistani woman, I grew up understanding that the best guarantee of my life-long security is the promise of a man’s companionship. A man will back me financially, ward off awkward questions that will arise if I remain single too long and give me a ‘home’ to care for. A man will chaperone me to family gatherings, tell me how best to behave and transform me into ‘a complete woman’.  While this formula for security infuriated me on several levels, it is the things it left unsaid that horrified me the most. No one told me just how badly a ...

“Democracy is the best revenge,” President Zardari’s legacy

I can say with some confidence that President Zardari’s legacy will be written in golden words. I don’t say this as his son, or patron-and-chief of the Pakistan People’s Party – but as a student of history. I would compare his presidency to that of America’s Lyndon B Johnson (LBJ). He too was an accidental president. He came to power following the assassination of the popular and charismatic John F Kennedy. Much like Shaheed Mohtrama Benazir Bhutto, JFK was assassinated before he could implement much of his agenda and vision for the country. LBJ used the political capital he gained following ...

7 reasons why Aitchison College is the best school in Pakistan

A common thread unites a disparate group of great Pakistanis, each of whom has made a mark on the nation’s landscape. What does Mr  Syed Babar Ali have in common with Adnan Sami? What links the mild-mannered Sardar Ayaz Sadiq to the fiery Akbar Bugti? The answer lies in a single educational establishment at the heart of Lahore, which has produced some of the finest gentlemen in Pakistan and to answer the question “why Aitchison College” more than any other, here are seven possible reasons: Photo: Shah Jewna’s Kodachrome Facebook page Character first: Aitchison produces the perfect gentleman An Aitchisonian exudes a ...

When ‘sharing’ her husband was her best choice

“Baji I need to leave early today.”  I was finishing my breakfast, a few weeks ago, with the morning paper in front of me when my maid announced, polishing the dining chairs with more gusto than usual. “Why Shada? You need to go the market?” I asked her casually. Shada has been with me for several years and over the time I have managed to develop a friendly rapport with her, given her cleanliness, punctuality and zeal to create a better life for her children. She lives in a small, three room house with her postal worker husband and her three young children. ...
