Stories about beauty

Razzaq makes us proud!

We all saw it last night. We all saw why Pakistan cricket is so special. Most of the special wins that Pakistan have achieved during their cricketing history have been at the result of outstanding individual performances. Yes, it is a team game and Australia and South Africa have time and again shown how a good team effort can bring you wins consistently. For Pakistan, however, it has always been about the Imran Khans, Javed Miandads, Wasim Akrams, Waqar Younis’, Shoaib Akhtars, Inzamam Ul Haqs, Saeed Anwars, and Shahid Afridis that have brought them victories single handedly. And last night Abdul Razzaq did exactly that! He single ...

I’m sexy, sweet and want world peace

There was a battle in Sanya, China today. 115 pretty, young contestants were competing against each other and in the end, Miss USA, Alexandria Mills won the title of Miss World 2010. She is, or so the organizers of the pageant tell us,  the most beautiful miss in the world. What a thing to be told! But what about the remaining ladies? Weren’t they left behind feeling ugly?  They must have felt hopeless and rejected. Pageants have often been criticized for being demeaning and accused of making  women feel bad about themselves. Also, many feel that these are beyond just being contests of beauty. Remember ...

Winter style palette: bright, bold and chic

Summer is sadly over and it’s taking with it the coral lips, acid nails and glowy skin we enjoyed so much for the past three months. Winter, in comparison, can seem a little dreary and bleak – and who enjoys static-filled hair days, chapped lips and dehydrated skin? But I always love winter beauty trends. Chic and sophisticated are words that instantly come to mind when you think of winter beauty – flawless skin, dark lips and smoldering eyes. Here is a round up of the hottest looks from the runways to show you what to do with makeup this ...

No room for ugly leaders in Pakistan

The other day I met someone (a prominent bureaucrat) who gave much credence to appearances. He insistently equated good looks with competence. Although he did not say his opinion was swayed by colour bias, his comparison of top Pakistani and Indian politicians makes me think there was a prejudice favouring our “tall and handsome” leaders against gnome-like ones across the border. This form of judgement, in my humble opinion, is a typical Pakistani trait. It shows that we still regard someone with clear skin and certain facial and physical traits as fit to lead a nation. Unattractive but effective Consider the founder of ...

Spreading the joy

The last week of Ramazan brings thriving business for salons as women line up to prepare for Eid. But as we wait in overcrowded salons for our turn, we forget that those putting in the extra hours, working their magic seemingly tirelessly to bring out the best in us, are also women who would like to prepare for Eid. A couple of days before the festival, when I was waiting for my turn at a salon, I got talking to the women working there. They told me that in the days before Eid, they work 12 to 15 hours a ...

Aisha: Beauty without brains

My sole purpose of watching Aisha, was to see how Sonam Kapoor who claims to be an avid Jane Austen reader would recreate her master piece ‘Emma’ on the silver screen. Alas! Aisha was no ‘Emma.’ Although it was an adaptation of the book, the film could very well be touted as a desi Sex and the City. Aisha Kapoor (Sonam Kapoor) is the archetypal uptown girl from super rich Delhi. She’s smart,  sassy and devotes her time to animal rights, art exhibitions, polo matches and shopping sprees along with her newly found obsession – matchmaking. The film takes us on ...

Meera has a website!

‘Super star’ Meera’s website is up, and I’ve seen it and I think it’s quite awesome. I’d rather you visit the website yourself, but if you are too lazy to sit and analyse each point like someone who has nothing else to do, you can always take a look at my humble collection of observations. The biography page I loved this page. It provides the viewer with all the information one could ask for. For instance, we don’t have to make any guesses at the film star’s age anymore because the site is kind enough to inform us that ‘the dashing beauty’ ...

Old-fashioned fashion reporter

They say I should dress to kill. After all, I am a fashion reporter. But they don’t understand that I am an old-fashioned reporter. The spirit that prowls in me can only identify with old-fashioned people. To say the least, I admire their taste of dressing and adore their hair styles. Well, to say the least, I hear all kinds of remarks from family and friends, but the fact is that today’s fashion does not make sense and looks bohemian to me. Yes, yes, your very own 2010 ‘in’ style appears very bohemian to me. I too probably, though, look ...

A rant against ‘so-called beauticians’

If a genie appeared before a woman and offered to grant her three wishes, she would probably choose to become pretty, prettier, and prettiest. With ever-growing exposure to more beautiful women through media, fairness creams advertisements declaring beauty to be ‘power’ and portrayals that only beautiful, fair-complexioned and skinny women are chosen by eligible bachelors, women are becoming obsessed with beautifying themselves and changing their look overnight. Women face pressure from their peers, husbands or by their husbands ‘to-be’ to look like the woman of their dreams. Unfortunately as there are no real-life genies available, the only option left for most women is to go to ...

How to avoid hair salon drama

From years of experience with bad haircuts and encountering hair colors from all spectrums of the rainbow I decided to write the ultimate guilde to deflecting the pain of trashy hair. Lets face it, we live in a country where the literacy rate is low and the service industry, when it comes to fashion, seems like it is run by drag queens. So when you  walk out of a salon you are ready to pay someone to tell you the ugly truth about your new look. 1.Know the basics: If you ask the question “what do you suggest?” you are going ...
