Stories about animals

Are you okay with sacrificing tortured animals on Eid?

Hello people. It’s been ages since I have written, but recently ET released a mini-story on Raja the sheep that made my blood run cold. Trigger warning for anyone who loves animals, but this is the sad reality of Bakra Eid, which I have covered before in: Please don’t kill my goat and Please don’t kill my goat or camel (II). Raja the sheep is owned by Jaffar Khan, a ‘sheep enthusiast’ who needs to be put in jail for the horrifying torture he has subjected his pet to. Let’s leave aside the fact that he plans to slaughter a creature he loves; this grinning ...

Lessons from the US: Be kind to animals!

The first time I fell in love, I was a mere child. My first love was not a person but the numerous animals surrounding me, and as I grew older, this love and interest in the animal kingdom only grew. Photo: Reuters Hence, it was no surprise to anyone that my favourite television programme was the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to All Animals (SPCA) documentary on the Animal Planet channel. SPCA is an NGO based in the United States which works for animal rights and raises its voice against cruelty to animals. Their television program showed ...

The brown leopard that lost its majesty

Chaos echoed in the hills of Nathiagali when a number of men, dressed inappropriately in shalwar kameez and slippers, were spotted resting steel cages on their shoulders, while some tripped and others balanced. As they hiked through the hills, turning heads, a number of bystanders, including women and children, just tagged along in excitement. What was thrilling the crowd and making me sad was that a beautiful animal that could have been roaming in the wild was caged up. Drowsily resting its head on a piece of raw meat and occasionally moving its tail was a brown leopard. Entrapped in a ...

The innocent prisoners of Pakistan

Every few months, we hear more bad news coming out of a local jail. Inmates have been injured due to negligence on the part of the jail administration, and some have even lost their lives due to the jail staff’s apathy. Those that survive live in squalid conditions and are often victims of abuse at the hands of visitors to the jail. Even the most dangerous killers in the jail are afraid of visitors, cowering in fear at the sight of dozens of wide-eyed spectators, many of whom are armed with sticks and stones. Yet, the government takes no action against ...

Be fair to your pets and vaccinate them

My father has always said to me, Alizeh, if a person can learn to love a human being the way a dog loves it’s master – so truly and unconditionally – the world would be a happier place.  Truer words could not have been spoken. As far back as I can remember, there hasn’t been one day when I have left my house without returning to a familiar, constantly wagging tail, or a wet lick to my hand. As far as my memory serves, I have known many Rexys, Maggies, and even a blind Tommy. Then for a few months, there was Brandy. Having ...

Please don’t close down the zoos

It was with a heavy heart that I followed Islamabad zoo’s female elephant Saheli’s last days. News had it that she died due to an injury to her foot which got septic or a possible tetanus infection. Terribly tragic as the event was, Mr Kamran Shafi’s subsequent article on the subject was disturbing and added insult to injury. Speaking of Pakistan, he wrote, Close down all the zoos – For we do not deserve the poor things, the animal haters that we are. It is true that there are some terrible people in our country who exhibit an utter lack of compassion towards animals and even ...

Animal cruelty does not make for good entertainment

It’s quite the norm in Pakistan to come across monkey-trainers putting on a show or hearing about a rooster fight taking place in a certain village, or even going to the beach and witnessing people paying to watch a snake and a mongoose fight it out – all in the name of harmless fun. It is quite disturbing, however, to see the media take this form of entertainment – if you can call it that – to the next level. Channel surfing one morning, I chanced upon a TV show where a trainer tried to coax his goat to stand on ...
