Suhai Aziz Talpur: Celebrated worldwide but mocked in her own country?

A week ago, three armed men attacked the Chinese consulate in Karachi. Before they could reach the diplomatic staff inside, the militants were killed in a police operation led by SP Suhai Aziz Talpur. The encounter also resulted in multiple casualties, including two visa applicants and two policemen fighting on the frontline. From CNN to Reuters, the news made rounds worldwide. Talpur is being glorified as the daughter of Pakistan, representing the face of bravery and women power. Restoring Talpur pride, her pictures are being juxtaposed alongside Faryal Talpur, who is currently embroiled in a money laundering case. Chinese media too is in ...

Has Farooq Sattar and Amir Khan’s “leadership” ended MQM-P for good?

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) recently removed Farooq Sattar from the convenership of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P). Interestingly, the petition was not filed by any rival party; rather, it was filed by the Rabita Committee of MQM-P. They also challenged the intra-party election held by the Sattar group. Sattar decided to challenge the decision of the ECP in the Supreme Court of Pakistan and subsequently, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) restored him back to his position. The damage, however, has been done, and it is deep. Back in the day, the MQM used to have a unique attraction for the youth of Karachi, and ...

Pakistan, Bahadurabad, PIB – how many MQMs need to fail before the party accepts defeat?

Life is a system to cycles; it ebbs and flows. To sound more dramatic, everything that rises must fall, or in the words of George RR Martin, “Valar Morghulis” – all men must die. Men, or mankind rather, tend to forget simple facts in life; chiefly, the fact of death and the eventual perishing of one’s existence. People tend to forget that once they are gone, all their attempts to undermine others will be gone as well. The reason why I must apprise my readers with such boring things, which they have probably heard of numerous times before, is that ...

#TeamFaryal: 5 reasons why Amir Khan is the epitome of ‘bad guys’

Amir Khan and Faryal Makhdoom have certainly been Pakistan’s most interesting couple since they got together. Whether it is through their Snapchat feed or their Instagram posts, we have all witnessed the couple’s memories together. Somehow it feels like their history of social media spats is almost as long as the history of their relationship. While many celebrities keep their personal lives far away from social media, Amir and Faryal are constantly seen addressing personal matters or doing their dirty laundry in the public eye. Some call it a PR tactic, others call it stupidity. At the end of the day, their drama ...

Dear Amir Khan, publicising your divorce on social media only shows your indecency

During my recent trip to Pakistan, I often found myself flicking through TV channels. Even though I am still uncertain about what exactly I was searching for, I do remember seeing a menagerie of prominent faces flash on the TV screen from time to time. Some celebrities like Mahira Khan, Fawad Khan and Shahid Afridi appeared regularly. This was wholly expected given that the scale of their stardom has transcended Pakistan’s borders. But I also recall seeing Amir Khan, a British-born boxer, with similar frequency. He was promoting an energy drink in a commercial that showed him running through the streets of Lahore while ...

Amir Khan’s sexist comments on ‘women belonging in the kitchen’ are nothing but a reflection of our misogynistic attitude towards gender roles

Amir Khan, the world famous British boxer of Pakistani lineage, is no stranger to controversy. Although an extremely successful and talented boxer, most of the time, he is in the news for “other” reasons. We witnessed a very public meltdown of his marriage, followed by the umpteenth reconciliation. We heard him bragging about being a celebrity and also public admissions regarding his infidelity, and of course the leaked sex tape, which merely confirmed his adulterous nature. He appears to be someone hungry for attention, be it of any kind, and I have a strong suspicion that many of his antics are deliberate ...

Are British Pakistanis uncivil and lacking basic common courtesy?

According to a leaked email by Paul Sabapathy CBE, the former Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands, the British Pakistani community must be taught basic ‘common courtesy and civility’, after he attended the August 14th celebration in Birmingham. His comments caused uproar amongst the British Pakistani community, who demanded an apology from him, which he promptly offered, followed by a hasty resignation after serving eight years in this post.  He was the first member of the Asian community who held a prestigious post. At the event celebrating independence, he was apparently dealt in a manner which was unbecoming and disrespectful after which he vented in ...

Dil Dhadakne Do: A star-studded, elitist cruise

Having watched Zoya Akhtar’s latest flick Dil Dhadakne Do might give you a flashback to 2011, when Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was released, a movie directed by her as well. Although the story lines are not similar, the central message might be, to some extent, alike. However, it is up to the viewers to judge whether this is accurate or just a personal opinion of this writer. Dil Dhadakne Do is a story about well-off and established people. It may come off as elitist, but Akhtar has directed it in a way in which the middle class can relate themselves ...
