Stories about Afridi

Afridi: Back with a Boom Boom!

We have all seen, admired and enjoyed the likes of Gilchrist, Jayasuriya, Gayle and Sehwag destroying bowlers with their powerful shots which could ruin the careers of bowlers and change the scenario of any match. And we all revere the player who literally makes our hearts skip a beat, for whom any ground in the world is not big enough, who still has the maximum fan following even among fans of rival teams and for whom the stadium erupts with chants of ‘Boom Boom’ when he comes to bat. A few years ago former England cricketer, Geoffery Boycott, said, “Shahid Afridi is fantastic, I love ...

Reliving history, uniting a nation: Miandad’s “chakka” and Afridi immortalised

Ever since I can remember, people have spoken about the Miandad “chakka”. India versus Pakistan. The holy grail of all rivalries. A target of 246. The sacred Sharjah ground. Women and children prayed. One wicket remained. It was the last ball of the final over and six runs were needed to win. Miandad hit the winning six and was forever immortalised winning the hearts of an entire nation. That was 1986. In 2014, 28 years later Pakistan beat India in perhaps the best match my generation has ever witnessed in their lifetime. The similarities have been plastered everywhere, ludicrous stats thrown ...

Corey Anderson may have broken Afridi’s record, but he can’t break our spirits!

On October 4, 1996, a record was made by one of our very own. Shahid Khan Afridi, who started his career in cricket 17 years ago, made the fastest century record in his second ODI against Sri Lanka. He scored 102 of 37 balls which was the fastest century in an ODI. Afridi has an aggressive batting style as he loves hitting his famous sixes on every ball and has smashed more than 400 sixes in all formats of the game. Now, after 17 years, this record was recently broken by New Zealand’s all-rounder Corey Anderson against the West Indies in just 36 balls. ...

Does Afridi need to behave himself?

While there are several serious issues brewing in Pakistani cricket, perhaps the worst is that senior cricketers have started quarreling over comments passed by each other, adding spice to cricket talks shows, but creating chaos in the media. Pakistan finally managed to win a series against South Africa for the first time. They managed to win the hearts again of Pakistani cricket lovers, and at the same time Misbahul Haq won appreciation from critics too. Sadly, Shahid Afridi’s performance throughout the series raised a lot of questions about his batting performance especially since he has played 300 plus matches yet still resorts to the same careless shots. Cricket drama starring ...

Younis and Afridi, do us a favour and never come back!

The euphoria in the air was palpable. The Pakistan cricket team had just wrapped up a historic 3-0 series whitewash over the much-fancied and star-studded English side, buoyant after their Ashes triumph, and were looking to affirm their status as the number one Test team in the world with a successful tour of Asia. The ghosts of ‘that’ painful English tour two years prior had finally been exorcised; the upcoming ODI and T20 series seemed a mere formality. The Pakistan team had always been more comfortable in the limited over formats, and the downtrodden English team was there for the ...

PCB Central Contracts: When seniority takes precedence over skill

Welcome to the peculiar world of Pakistan cricket; a world where players like Shahid Afridi and Younis Khan are rewarded Category A contracts, shortly after being snubbed from the team announced for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy tournament. Another “dropout” Umar Akmal nabbed a Category B contract. Can anyone check with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) about their criteria of bestowing these contracts? For those who do not know, here is a brief summary of the three categories as reported by The Express Tribune: The increases gives “A” category players a monthly salary of 359,375 rupees ($3,600) and a Test match fee of ...

Afridi’s bringing boom boom back!

I started following cricket sixteen years ago when I was hardly five. It has been the only sport which has kept me so engrossed for such a long period of time. My passion for cricket was ignited by my love for Shahid Afridi. My liking for all other sports fizzles out after a certain period of time, but cricket, for certain remains a sport which will continue to be a craze for me for the better part of my life. In my sixteen years of watching cricket, I have seen some of the greatest teams play and witnessed some of the ...

Why should Afridi steer the ship?

On March 30, 2011, when the team lost to our arch rivals and eventual champions, India in the semi-finals of the coveted 2011 World Cup, this is what our team captain at the time, Shahid Afridi had to say: “I want to say sorry to my nation. We tried our level best but couldn’t make it. I am pleased with the way my team played throughout the competition.” He apologised for leading a fragmented, jaded, and weak team to the top four; something which he envisaged on February 9, 2011. The talismanic all-rounder was ...

Is Shahid Afridi above the law?

I joined in, wholeheartedly, as millions of Pakistanis rejoiced over our recent triumph on the cricket ground against Bangladesh. In a nation where cricket is followed with religious fervour, it is no surprise that cricket heroes like Shahid Afridi are exalted to the level of saints. This may be the reason Afridi’s recent outburst, at the Karachi Airport, was swiftly brushed aside as justified, with no official follow-up save for a brief statement issued by the cricketer that implicitly condoned his actions. The public’s acceptance of his actions is disturbing to say the least. Granted, Afridi’s consistent contributions on the cricket ...
