Stories about action

The Hunger Games: Stimulate your mind

If the best games stimulate the mind and the body, then The Hunger Games belongs near the top of the pile. Adapted from a novel bearing the same name by Suzanne Collins, this first installment in a trilogy is a superb dramatic action film, which engages the grey matter on various levels, thanks to its rich depth in characterisation, as well as a subtle multi-layered narrative. Set in a dystopian future in North America, things start with 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), who feeds her little sister Primrose (Willow Shields), and her widowed mother (Paula Malcomson), ...

Contraband hits and misses

Directed by Baltasar Kormákur, Contraband is an unremarkable heist movie, which features little in the way of action, and instead tries hard to build tension with narrative. The film stars Mark Wahlberg (Chris Farraday) as a former smuggler, who has given up the crooked life to live honestly with his wife Kate (Kate Beckinsale) and children. The movie shifts into second gear when Chris’s brother-in-law Andy (Caleb Landry Jones), who also happens to be a smuggler, is forced to dump his consignment of drugs from a cargo ship in order to ...

Fast five: Sheer adrenalin

If this movie has to be described in two words, “sheer adrenalin” would be appropriate. Two hours and 10 minutes of a thrilling ride is what viewers should expect before hitting the theatres. Fast Five is all about heart-stopping action sequences, nerve wrecking suspense, signature car race scenes along with a bit of an emotional appeal. Writer Chris Morgan and director Justin Lin, the brains behind the mind blowing production, start exactly where Fast & Furious ended. Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) is busted out while he is being transferred to prison, after which crew decides to go their separate ways ...

Help! My Facebook page got hacked

Dear Miss Informed, Help! I am in love with a girl who doesn’t like me. We have been friends for four years and used to talk every day. She even knew that I loved her but she never liked me. However, recently she stopped talking to me because my Facebook account got hacked and the hacker tagged her in a relationship with me on my status. After this incident, she openly insulted me online and said that she always hated me and would never talk to me again. I love everything about her, and miss the good times I had with ...

Los Angeles versus aliens: Who wins? Who cares!

Battle: Los Angeles is a film that won’t confuse you with plot twists and multi-dimensional characters.  The 1 hour 56 minute film is a straight-up, military-oriented, alien invasion film powered by the basics: tension and heroics. It may not be an original concept, but director Jonathan Liebesman (Texas chainsaw massacre: The beginning) and writer Christopher Bertolini (The General’s Daughter) put together a film that is a thrilling ride. The plot Alien beings have invaded major cities across the globe. Only this time, the battle field is Los Angeles. A squad of marines is busy evacuating civilians from Los Angeles, which the military is about to nuke. There are ...

The govt ‘takes notice’ of target killings today, tomorrow and forever

Once again the chief minister of Sindh, the governor of Sindh and other responsible senior functionaries of the government have taken notice of the recent spate of target killings in Karachi. But I have to say that I have been reading such reports ever since my childhood, saying that such and such authority has taken notice of such and such incident, and promising such and such action. But it has never really amounted to anything except an exercise in public relations. The first time I heard of this “taking notice” was when a provincial minister education ‘took note’ of an incident ...

Don’t just blame the government

Last week, I read an article pertaining to the closure of 260 industrial units in Sindh in 2009. It made me question one thing – who is to blame for this? Considering this is the Pakistani community and media in question, only one party could be at fault – the government. Reasons cited for the closure were the power crisis, lack of finances, and the global recession. However, is it actually fair to place the blame squarely on the government’s shoulders? How many of us have actually attempted to take action to solve the power crisis? I’ve seen street lamps being powered ...

The Matrix versus Inception: Dreaming of reality

The Matrix versus Inception – our table stood divided at two all. The waitress was the deciding vote. Which would she choose? I handed her the tip, whispering Matrix, Matrix, Matrix, under my breath. “Inception. No doubt about it,” she answered. Considering the decade that has spanned between the films, you would be forgiven for thinking that the Matrix is a sci-fi film from a different generation to Inception and therefore incomparable, but you’d be wrong. Indeed when writer and director of the film Christopher Nolan was asked in a recent LA Times article whether or not Inception would be another second-life film akin to ...
