Venom’s teaser was empty and disappointing, but hope never dies when it’s Tom Hardy

The teaser lacks in almost everything; no action sequences, no spectacular set pieces, no costumes and no Venom!

A standalone movie featuring Venom has been in the pipeline at Sony since 2007. Many scripts were written and scrapped, ideas were thrown around, but nothing quite actually worked out. What we got instead was Venom appearing in Sam Riami’s Spider-Man 3 as a super villain portrayed by Topher Grace (That 70s Show). Venom, as portrayed in Spider-Man 3, was criticised by fans and movie critics for lacking depth and the inhumanity the character was known for.

After striking a deal with Marvel Studios regarding the future of the Spider-Man franchise, Sony has decided to kick start its very own Marvel Universe with Venom. Tom Hardy plays Eddie Brock, the host of an alien symbiote that gives him incredible powers, such as superhuman strength among others.

The supporting cast comprises of Michelle Williams (Shutter IslandBrokeback Mountain) as Ann Weying, Riz Ahmed (Rogue One, The Night Of) and Reid Scott (Veep). The film is being directed by Ruben Fleischer (Gangster SquadZombieland).

The teaser trailer of Venom does not reveal much about the plot. It lacks in almost everything. There are no action sequences, no spectacular set pieces, no costumes and most importantly, no Venom. Yes! You read that right. The teaser trailer of Venom does not contain even a second of the titular character. Sure, we get to watch Hardy being chased by some people, but we have already seen that in Mad Max. It doesn’t happen every day that you play a trailer and don’t get to watch the main character. I cannot stress enough how disappointing it was to not get even a glimpse of Venom in the teaser, but then again, that is why they call it is called a teaser maybe.

There is a scene in the teaser where Hardy is seen erratically shaking while his face turns black, probably because of the symbiote. We get to see the alien symbiote in its natural form, but not when it has taken Eddie Brock as its host.

To be frank, the Venom teaser plays out like an intense and gritty version of Fast and Furious, with cars exploding over a cool narration. Also, the movie logo seems like something that should have been used for an animated movie.

Was the teaser what I was expecting it to be? No.

Was it disappointing? Yes.

But does it make me lose hope? Not at all.

There is always hope when Tom Hardy is involved and I am sure he’s not going to disappoint. I would just assume that as the shooting of Venom has wrapped up recently, the CGI was not ready, but  the producers wanted an early start to the movie’s marketing campaign.

Here is hoping that the trailer would be far better than the teaser and we would actually get to watch Venom in all his immoral glory.

Venom releases on October 5, 2018.
