Brains, not blonde

Published: July 10, 2010

I am plump. If you see me walking by in the corridor, the first thing you will notice about me is that I am plump. No matter, what I do I just can’t let go of the food that finds its way next to me.

Some weeks back, at the opening of a salon, I met a woman who was all dressed up. Her manner of dressing was flawless. ‘Pretty’ would be a perfect word to define her, polished nails, high heels and attire. Soon she noticed me sitting right opposite her. We started talking and soon she started talking about weight and eating and said: “I wonder why people don’t care about themselves, what’s there to offer in this world, apart from good looks and a slim and smart figure?” The moment she uttered those words, it struck me hard on the head — and on the heart as well.

I gave her one last look and muttered this in my heart, “Yeah right, dumb blonde!” Probably, a hundred times. Why do we forget that brains and a little intelligence is what exactly counts at the end of the day.

I still remember my good old college days at St Josephs, when we heard a debating contest “Is it better to be a wild beast or a dumb blonde.” I still remember it well, how I had actually sided with the students who believed it was better to be a wild beast than a dumb blonde. I had given my reasons to a close friend who was sitting beside me and said: “Well, at least we make sense out of something than nothing at all.” Maybe I was wrong, maybe I wasn’t – but one thing is for sure, intelligence matters more than anything else.

There are in fact two more traits that make up a lady, other than brains I would say it would have to be breeding. Yes, by  rare chance a complete lady is one who has all three qualities in her beauty, brains and breeding. But then that’s a rarity and one can’t dwell on it for long – at least in this world.

:)) Its good to have brains but better if looks, beauty and brain combine and make a wonderful combination…Only brain does make sense,,, but human nature: getting attracted to looks and beauty…..we are like that…Recommend

I understand your point, but I’ve had trouble with dissing girls for being beautiful and stupid. It’s not their fault, just like its not my fault if I’m unappealing but smart.

Both intelligence and beauty are traits we use to sell ourselves to the world around us. I disagree that one of them is more important than the other.

stress has been laid on superficiality through the ages, and I can understand why you’d lay stress on intelligence now. But in my opinion,no one trait is more important

But i liked this article. You rock, sister!Recommend

Thanks for your opinion, but we’d have liked a bit more substance in the “post”.Recommend

I don’t agree with the lady’s opinion because yes, dumb blonde, but I’m sorry, your perspective is a bit stupid as well. Just because you like food, you’re rationalizing the fact that you’re overweight? I’m fat too, and I won’t say plump or healthy, I’m fat. You can join a gym, when you excercise, you automatically start eating less, I speak from experience. Obesity leads to a load of diseases, the elast of which are heart diseases and diabetes. There may be more to a woman than her weight, but a woman who says, “I’m fat and can’t do anything about it” is the most unappealing kind, even if she’s a Nobel Prize winner.Recommend

Beauty with brain so hard to find but beauty with brain and a bit of tarr’ka of good heart is no less than a formidable combination.

I dont think theirs a dearth of beauty & brains combination in Pakistan, considering the escalating academic culture in the country. Recommend

Hey, good post.Completely agree with you about the three things a woman needs to be perfect. However, I think she could be perfect even without beauty because it’s her character that ultimately shines through. We can tolerate a dumb, pretty blonde for a while- until she loses all her charm and seems ordinary to us. Recommend

  • Sehrish

    I agree with Ghausia.

The woman you met at the salon may have been a dumb blonde- but that doesn’t mean that every woman who’s a blonde or mildly attractive has nothing else to offer. It’s very immature to assume good looking people are always dumb, because I’ve met plenty of ugly people who didn’t compensate with charm or intelligence. Unattractive people often try to make themselves feel better by antagonizing those whose looks intimidate them- but instead of feeling insecure, one should be impartial to looks and look at the bigger picture and stop generalizing people into boxes like “ugly- must be a genius” or “gorgeous- she probably has rocks for a brain.”

And i’ll taking being human- dumb or not- over being a beast any day. Recommend

We should outlaw dumb blondes for the sake of wild beasts!Recommend
