When ‘Aisi Taisi Democracy’ meets its neighbour, ‘Aisi Taisi Hypocrisy’

Published: August 26, 2015

It flawlessly reveals the public message with a tinge of sarcasm in a single video.

It’s been seven decades since the Partition of Indian sub-continent in 1947, but the governments on both sides are still struggling to manage peace between the two so-called rival nations. The recent complicated dialogue process between India and Pakistan may have been revoked in the middle of the reciprocal accusations as officials argued over the core base of talk-itinerary.

However, the public opinion of both nations contains the spirit of peace – and this will remain until reconciliation, tranquillity and good neighbourliness prevails in their respective motherlands.

On August 15th, India’s Independence Day, Indian rock band, Indian Ocean presented a satirical song called Mere Saamne Wali Sarhad Pe that depicted the Indo-Pak glitches. It is a rendition of Kishore Kumar’s classic romantic song Mere Samne Wali Khirki Mein, from the movie Padosan (1968) starring Sunil Dutt and Saira Bano.

The two-minute song flawlessly reveals the public message with a tinge of sarcasm in a single video, by the Indian’s political satire show Aisi Taisi Democracy. The song is filled with harsh realities, and has gone viral on all social media platforms.

The satirical version – featuring Rahul Ram, social-satirist Sanjay Rajoura and writer-cum-lyricist Varun Grover – endorses the notion that mutual harmony and deep friendship should replace past disputes between the two nations.

The intense lyrics explain the duplicities, double standards, religious pressures, suppressions and the real face of the democratic structure on both sides. It accentuates that people of both nations are suffering from common problems, due to similar reasons. For instance:

“Wahan mullay YouTube ban karein, Yahan pandit kissing se ghabraye”

(Islamic clerics ban Youtube there, Hindu pandits are scared of kissing here)

“Democracy sadh rahi jailon mein, Aur sarkaro mein katil hai”

(Democracy is rotting in jail, while the authorities are the true culprits)

“Bas doh family ki chaandi hai, Wahan Bhutto hai, Yahan Gandhi hai”

(Only two families are flourishing, the Bhutto’s and the Gandhi’s)

The song skilfully rationalises and exposes different aspects behind the 68-years-old antagonism between India and Pakistan.

Across the border, a Pakistani army officer, Muhammad Hassan Miraj, has written a heart-felt satire piece based on the same song as a response, but he made amendments to the title– Aisi Taisi Hypocrisy.

The singer is Mujtaba Ali, while Kamran and Ali played the background guitar. The four-minute video produced by Khawar Azhar and directed by Gul Durrani has also gone viral on social media and is immensely appreciated by the Aisi Taisi Democracy members on social media.

Miraj has also beautifully highlighted the utmost significance of peace between the two neighbours. The blunt lyrics illustrate the thought process of the blame game, manipulations of hardliners and never-ending negative propagandas.

The initial lyrics take a jibe at India’s arrogance, persistent scepticism and Bollywood’s perpetual Pakistan-bashing, by labelling it as a terrorist.

“Seventy years honay ko hain, kuch ukhra ukhra rehta hai”

(It has been seventy years, yet we remain worn-out)

“ Us ki sab filmoon, gaanoon mein mujhay dehashatgard dekhate hain”

(They portray me as a terrorist in every movie and song)

The next couple of lines clearly indicate ‘the tit for tat policy’ of both governments; how India is using Dubai, while Pakistan is tilting towards China. The core concerns related to RSS, BJP and mullahs are also touched in a light but witty manner.

However, the most interesting part are the lyrics related to promoting peace amongst the young generation of India and Pakistan, as they deserve a better future. Hence, the song candidly emphasises that it’s neither Bhutto nor Gandhi, it is purely our own ‘funda’ (motto) and only we, the common people, can resolve it,

“Gali deyna ab chhor bhi do, beytho kuch kaam ki baat karein,

Kab tak banduhq banayen gey, ab bachon ko kuch gyaan bhi dein,

Na Bhutto ka na Gandhi ka, yeh tera mera funda hai.”

(Stop giving us the bullet; rather, let’s have a productive talk,

For how long will we build weapons, let’s preach our children better,

It’s neither Bhutto’s nor Gandhi’s, it’s our own motto.)

Miraj’s poetry humorously taunted his Indian counterparts with gentle sarcasm on visa policies and ban of movies,

“Veezay, filmein aur aashaein, topi karwana chor bhi do.”

(Visas, movies and misleading hopes, stop making such excuses.)

The last line satirically revealed the main reason behind the decades of Indo-Pak animosity by articulately naming foreigners as well as the media sensationalism on both sides of the border.

“Asal mein yeh sab kuch goron ka, kuch arbon ka, kuch breaking news ka dhanda hai.”

(In reality, this is the doing of American, Arabs and the media.)

Filled the sentimental values, both songs amazingly focus on the root causes that exploit the fault lines in Indo-Pak relations. The challenges, dilemmas and distrust prevailing between the two states can only be addressed by dialogues.

These fascinating lyrics are an example of how Indians and Pakistanis feel about each other and perceive these tense situations.  Such awe-inspiring efforts are intended to eliminate the hatred amongst the two neighbouring countries.

Simply put, these thought provoking songs are entertaining, and also the voice of both the nations.

Awesome! Definitely worth listening to understand the apprehensions of India and Pakistan. the families of Bhuttos and Gandhis have turned into dynasties by ruling these beautiful lands. It is better for India’s government to Not brush Kashmir conflict under the carpet. In the presence of so many TV channels, a government cannot hide its atrocities and suppress a freedom movement like Kashmir. Thousands of people have died in the Jammu and Kashmir area because of Indian army’s brutalities. Numerous families have been hurt due to stubborn policy of Indian governments. Mass graves of disappeared Kashmiris who killed in fake encounters, have been identified all over the Kashmir by international human right activists. Sexual torture and rape is daily perpetrated by paramilitary forces on Kashmiri women. It is so sad that many Indian democratic governments have ruled India but no one ever started some work to solve the conflict. Without Kashmir’s peace, nothing can be fruitful for bringing two nations together in a friendly atmosphere.Recommend

yes india and Pakistan should be good friends but it requires equality not dictation plus blame game n making sugar coated humiliating things in the name of entertainment should be stopped . indians should be brave enough to accept Pakistan as an reality rather than treating it like an under state . In the end gud job has been done by the writer who has promoted bitter truth expressedby both sides.Recommend

its always hard for two neighbors to bury their past which is full of hatred and move forward . Now Modi should act maturely and stop making war like scenario and let peace making its way. All the Hurriat leaders should be freed and the brutalities of Indian army must put to halt.Recommend

Peace is made on the basis of mutual respect. Pakistanis are taught hatred towards Indians and Hindus in their textbooks. They are taught a distorted history where India started all wars and Pakistan won all of them. Pakistan has been sponsoring a covert conflict with India for 68 years. Peace and Dialogue are not possible with such a nation.Recommend

  • Pakistani

Then why Pakistan bashing is so popular in India either in media or in election campaigns. India has not moved on, it is still banging its head in the dark corridors of superiority complex and making junta fool by hoax calls of Pakistan backed terrorism.
Indians always turn their faces away from the realities in Kashmir and you are also doing this by avoiding Kashmir issue and making useless comment.Recommend

It is the mental attitude of Hindu nationalism that is deterring normal ties between Pakistan and India. It is simply too bad that India is rebuffing to realize it. And it appears Modi Sarkar continues to present Pakistan negatively, in contrast, his nationalist government is actually building just the same type of horrific annoyances within India he is accusing Pakistan for. Look at the horrific examples of Modi Sarkar.

And the mantra that “we are just like same” is not true at all. There is a huge difference between Indians and Pakistanis in every aspect it may be the art and culture, language, traditions, religion, etc everything is totally different, and this difference is the basis of Pakistan. Good Relations should be restored within two nations but on the basis of equality and respect.Recommend

There is hardly anyone in India who doesn’t accept Pakistan as a reality. The concept of Akhand Bharat is long dead.Otheriwse India had a good chance to absorb Bangladesh, and did not do it.And if anybody thinks that Indians will be comfortable(especially the ones who are accused of the concept of Akhand Bharat) having another 200 million Muslims in their midst,he is sorely mistaken. Many are already resentful of the increasing percentage of Muslims in India and suggesting ridiculous and uncivilized methods to curtail it.Recommend

Majority of Pakistanis are indian hindus converted to islam under duress and torture centuries ago. But they like to identify themselves as a superior race and feel they are descendants of Arabs and Persians. Even they have named their missiles on foreign savage rulers who invaded the land which is presently Pakistan and looted raped forcefully converted its people. This shows a deep rooted hatred over India and Hindus, They can’t accept that hindus and Muslims can live together peacefully. India is a shining example to the world where people of varioutts faiths are living togethar under principles of secularism and democracy. India rejected Pakistan’s philosophy of dismembering any part of its territory on the basis of religion. This might have been possible 70 years ago when people were poor, hopeless and religion was only binding force but not anymore. More and more young population of India looks forward to future with hope of progress and better economic conditions. India has more population of Muslims than the entire population of Pakistan and hardly any will like to relocate to present Pakistan. India is reaching Mars and Pakistanis are still trying to enter Kashmir.Recommend

Dear NS, Pakistan’s leaders pursue the policy of “inflicting a thousand cuts on India” by covert actions like terrorism and encouraging fanatics on the sly. Pakistan doesn’t give justice to perpetrators of terrorism related crimes operating from its soil. Pakistani children are taught in school that savage Afghani, Mongol and Persian Rulers like Ghory, Mahmud, Gazhni, Taimur who raided what was India and now Pakistan were heroes and glorifies them, this is most ironical since these people looted and raped and tortured your own ancestors who were once Indians. The Muslims of Pakistan think they are superior to Indians and even Muslim Bengalis, thats why Bangladesh revolted and chose to become independent. You never appreciate the Vedic Culture of India which teaches peaceful coexistence of all faiths.Even the Muslims of India who are larger in number than your own population do not like to live in Pakistan. Under the circumstances your complaints against the perception of Pakistanis in India doesn’t hold water.Recommend

yeah true that’s why Indians glorify Shivaji , Pirthavi Raj Chauhan and beat teachers who dared to teach mughal history even though Mughals were Indian rulers and without them indian history isn’t complete. Ultimately they both are same irrespective of the UN standing or tag. And saying so only makes you hyporcrite. And no one wants to deal with hypocrites.

Do you even know the meaning of word “genocide”. Or just want to use such powerful words no matter how legit they are in teh context ? You make it sound as if only muslims died in Gujarat riot. This is what you get when u constantly listen to your mullah and media. Rather than doing any fact finding. Did you even consider looking at numbers in global forum, like from BBC news or CNN or wikipedia which is not governed by India or Pakistan ? Or just want to believe whatever false information you guys are fed. Even Kashmiri pundits were Kashmiris and were killed by muslim terrorists in 90s. Never heard you scream back then. Now you suddenly feel for Kashmiris still assuming that all Kashmiris are muslims and want to be with Pakistan ? Get a reality check. Just because few goons comes on street waving Pakistan flag does not mean the whole of valley wants to join Pakistan. You guys can;t even be realistic enough to start talks with and you expect any diplomatic solution ? The lies spread by Zia and successive government is so deep rooted that these lies have become facts and truths for you.

You have taken a simple comment as lecture. Lecture and Bhashan is something you are trying to give. Kashmir is the unresolved issue left at the time of partition in 1947, India annexed Kashmir valley against the wishes of 80% Muslim majority population of Kashmir, whereas Balochistan has no such history.
India was and is trying very hard to manipulate the tribal leaders of Balochistan and interestingly it is now open truth as Pakistan has decided to take the Indian RAW involvement in Balochistan at United Nations.
You cannot mingle an Independence movement with the uprising of few people out of which many are coming back to national fold.
What will corporate India do if Modi Sarkar’s jingoism pushed India into a war even on small scale with Pakistan?Recommend

What makes you think that 80% Kashmiris want to join Pakistan? It is only Pakistan,s propaganda and day dream. The history of Kashmir was that it was a multi ethnic society with Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists living peacefully under a Sufism based culture they lovingly called Kashmiriat. They never wanted division of Kashmir on religious grounds. After independence the ruler of Jammu & Kashmir officially annexed with India. However Jinnah could not digest it and sent tribals from Waziristan to forcibly capture Kashmir. The attacking tribals looted and killed the poor innocent Kashmiris in a medieval Taimur style operation till indian army reached and contained them. Since then Pakistan is indulging in spreading religion based fanaticism to poison the minds of people and wants to divide people on basis of religion. Please read Wikipedia to get your facts right. The problem is Pakistan has single point agenda: divide people on religious lines which goes against the very essence and philosophy of India. Please understand you can go hoarse crying Kashmir and shed crocodile tears but not an inch of indian land will be annexed to Pakistan.Recommend

  • Ajay

I think you are aware that even your leader Jinnah’s grandparents were Hindus from Gujarat and he was not the progeny of some Arab general. The problem with most Muslims of Pakistan is they are confused and dont want to accept their Indian ancestory. Somehow they want to believe that they are a superior race than Indians. This is mindset of a handful of Pakistanis who are the elite and ruling class and to rule over the poor common Pakistanis they misuse religion to spread poison and hatred. On each and every real issue they live in a denial mode whether it is acceptance of Pakistan as a source and perpetrator of terrorism for India or the fact that India is a multi cultural secular state which rejects any attempt to further divide its territory on religious grounds.Recommend

What does this foolish and factually incorrect mindset shows? Please accept the fact that we are all of same land and share the same culture but only your religious faiths have changed to Islam. Indian Vedic culture says all faiths are different path leading to same divine goal but what does your faith teach you? That non muslims are ignorant/unclean and to live with Muslims they have to pay some special tax. Every where you discriminate with non muslims. It is enshrined in your religion. You have no answer on my basic questions rather you are diverting to Dalits. I don’t know why every pakistani talks about Dalits in India . We are competent enough to deal with various sections of our society and don’t be under the impression that we are a divided or weak Nation. This is how you people want to see us and this is the type of selective news you are fed with. My point is Hinduism is an inclusive culture and never imposed itself on people of other faith or discriminated against other. My second point is we all people of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are part of same philosophy and culture, but only religious faith of some people have changed to Islam under duress or inducement. We have no problem if someone follows Islam or any other religion. But following a religion doesn’t mean you forget your roots and treat yourselves as descendants of some foreign generals or invaders. That’s laughable. And please do not divide society on religious lines. State of J&K was peaceful multi cultural society till Pakistan spread poison. But good sense will prevail and narrow minded politics by misusing religion will be defeated. Religion is a path to achieve spirituality and divinity not to be misused to gang up people and spread hatred against people of other communities. Please be content with what you have and focus on good relations and development rather than crying over Kashmir and shedding crocodile tears over various sections of people of India including that of J&K.Recommend
