Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis: On the go and ready for more

Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis are like two pieces of a puzzle that come together to make a perfect picture.

With the World number one crown already in their possession, Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis entered the all England Lawn Tennis Club for the Wimbledon 2015 title. Mirza had won the Junior Doubles Wimbledon title back in 2003 and now she was all set for another Wimbledon campaign. Hingis had first won this title back in 1996, and 20 years later, she was looking to repeat history.

This was just their second Grand Slam as a team but in such a short span of time, the Indo-Swiss pair managed to do well enough to be a major contender for the title. Reaching the finals without dropping a set, Mirza and Hingis were on the verge of making history. However, in the final, they faced two-time Grand Slam champions in the form of Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova.

In 2011, Mirza made it to French Open final with Vesnina; four years later, she made it to yet another Grand Slam final but this time, it was against Vesnina. A nail biting match followed with both teams toe to toe, a hold followed a hold, a break followed a break, an ace followed a winner. In some high quality tennis, there was little that separated both the teams. After a very well contested final, Mirza and Hingis grabbed the Women’s Double Championship title with a 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 win. This achievement gave Mirza a well-deserved first doubles Grand Slam. For Hingis, however, it was her 10th.

After her win, Mirza posted on social media:

The tennis world has found another super doubles team in Mirza and Hingis, both players complement each other’s games like different puzzles that come together to make a perfect picture. And their string of wins is a speaking testimony to that.

After winning Wimbledon, the team took some rest with Mirza flying back to Hyderabad to celebrate with her family, followed by her trip to Colombo where Pakistan faced Sri Lanka in a cricket series and Shoaib Malik played well, hitting sixes here and there.

Not to forget the epic dubsmash that Mirza and Malik made featuring Mukhtar, Ehsan, Bilal and a couple of other Pakistani cricketers.

Mirza is definitely having the time of her life, be it on or off the court. Hingis and Mirza are on the go and they’re ready for more. As we move into the hard court season that ends at US Open, the Indo-Swiss pair will probably be looking for another Grand Slam win. If they achieve this, it will definitely cement their number one spot to end 2015.

Sridhar Kaushik | 8 years ago | Reply You can't be a showgirl and be with an ace player. Such talks by Pakistanis show their ignorance of the game! Sania Mirza was once in the first 50 tennis ranking. She has chosen to concentrate on mixed doubles and doubles following an injury.
