Why are Pakistanis such Gay Porn addicts?

Published: June 15, 2013

The drive to portray Pakistanis, Indians, Kenyans and men from any other developing country as sex-crazed is pretty old.

As if the shameful articles accusing Pakistan of being “Pornistan” wasn’t enough a few years ago, there’s a new article out in a Western publication that belongs in the same category. If you read this article in Mother Jones, you’d think Pakistanis are THE most flaming homosexuals in the world.

The headline is telling of what’s inside:

“Why Is Gay Porn So Popular in Pakistan?”

While it starts off with a Pew Research Poll that shows Pakistan is among the least tolerant countries towards homosexuality, the author wants to prove that Pakistan isn’t just anti-homosexuality, its people love gay porn more than any other people in the world.

And like a pro, he uses Google search terms to conclude this:

“As of this writing, Pakistan is by volume the world leader for Google searches of the terms ‘shemale sex’, ‘teen anal sex’, and ‘man fucking man’, according to Google Trends. Pakistan also ranks second in the world (after similarly gay-intolerant Kenya) for volume of searches for the search term ‘gay sex pics’.”

This is just an outrageous insinuation as the Pornistan articles from 2010; those, published in several Western media outlets, showed Pakistanis – as well as Indians – as the world leaders in consuming massive amounts of pornography – including bestiality – also relied unsurprisingly on Google search terms.

This is how it works:

Google compiles data on how many times a term has been searched using its services and then you can access that data by looking for the specific terms on Google Trends. By and large the results of Google’s compilation are pretty accurate. There is no question about that. And yes, if you search for those terms, Pakistan does appear at the top.

The question is,

“Are the number of times porn terms are searched on Google a clear indicator of the target population’s porn consumption compared to the rest of the world?”

It would be if every person on the planet consumed porn by Googling for it. Or even a large majority did.

That is not the case and here’s why:

I live in the America – one of the most porn hungry countries in the world. Porn is so popular here that it’s a multi-billion-dollar industry. But here, people rarely “Google” porn. Maybe now and then when they need “variety” but for the most part, once they find a website they like, they bookmark it.

The overwhelming majority of Americans have access to the internet and own a computer in their homes. Once they find a good porn site, they simply bookmark it on their browser for later use.

And there aren’t that many websites to choose from. You could literally memorise the names of three or four and you’ll have access to thousands upon thousands of free, half an hour long explicit videos. You can either type that name or Google the name of the porn site and you’re there. Then you can do all your searches for specific terms inside the website.

So while Americans consume a lot of porn on average, specific term searches won’t show up on Google Trends because they access the porn websites directly not via Google so it appears as though they didn’t.

The reason Pakistanis appear so high on Google Trends is because only about 20% of Pakistanis have access to the internet – one of the worst rates of access in the world’s sixth largest country by population. Most Pakistanis are forced to use internet cafes for access. So each time, the chances are the cafe customer will be on a new computer and has to start his quest for porn anew. This means one thing: Googling.

Yes, Pakistanis do watch porn, but who doesn’t? This is fact. That they watch it more than anyone else, however, is a racist smear.

To prove it, run a Google search for “list of most popular porn sites”. Now, go to “Google Trends” and search for the name of each website and scroll down to see the popularity of said site in different countries. Pakistan will appear much lower than many other countries on every single site, including the United States and Britain. This is whether you look for gay porn or straight porn.

That, however, won’t stop people from trying to use something as nonsensical such as ‘Google search terms’ as an argument, which by no means tell us anything concrete to conclude that Pakistanis are world leaders in porn consumption in a quest to shame ordinary Pakistanis.

However, the drive to portray Pakistanis, Indians, Kenyans and men from any other developing country as sex-crazed is pretty old. Portraying the man of colour as a lesser being than the White man to justify the colonisation of their lands started centuries ago and is quite well-documented.

The current attempts are just leftovers from those racist times and need to be thrown back in the dustbin of history.

It’s really sickening to see how much hate average Pakistanis have towards gays in Pakistan. And it’s not just the illeterate people, even well educated people in our society express high levels of hate towards gays.Gay people are not treated as equals. The bigotry and hate is most strong from religious Pakistanis.Somehow, being a good Muslim has come to mean in Pakistan that you must discriminate and hate gays and lesbians.
Maulvis, ulema have left no stone unturned in propagation of hate against gays. When people hear their religious leaders telling them to treat gays with revulsion and disgust, they then carry out what the religious leaders ask them to do.Recommend

  • Abdul Basit

The most homophobic people in pakistan area those who are the most religious.LGBT community faces horrific discrimination from the faithful in pakistani society.Since when did being a good Muslim mean treating others with contempt? Spreading hate against gays ensures us Muslims will get to Heaven? We should remember that Islam is the religion of peace.Mistreating gays on the basis of religion is doing islam no service. We should speak up against the Muslim preachers who support homophobic bigotry.Such hatefilled preachers are a threat to all Muslims.Recommend

  • Fauzia Bawany

It’s not that we are only homophobic, but that we are so explicitly proud of hating gays. It’s one thing to be hatefilled and to be a bigot but to proudly wear your bigotry as a badge of honour shows how far our people have fallen.
But when hate and discrimination has religious approval and religious encouragement, then what can one expect from the masses? The people in Pakistan are convinced that they are making god happy by being horrible towards gays. What sort of mentality is this?Recommend

Sexual repression never works.Religion can try all it wants to repress the natural desires of people with violence and intimidation but the truth comes out eventually as is seen by what people look at in the privacy of their homes on their computers.Homosexuality is as natural as heterosexuality, all attempts by religion to suppress doesn’t make it go away.Being gay is just as normal as being straight.Recommend

  • Parveen Khan

The writer should’ve been more concerned over how homophobic we Pakistanis are, instead he indulges in Muslim victimhood mongering. The report he’s attacking showed that only 2% of Pakistanis viewed homosexuality positively. That’s a shockingly low number of people.NINE EIGHT% of our population disapproves of homosexuality, the writer isn’t perturbed about that at all,no,what matters most is to show how the West is out to get Muslims.
Deflecting attention and blame shifting won’t help the gays and lesbians in Pakistan. Our society is deeply homophobic, maybe the writer should condemn that also in his next blog.Recommend

I’m not blame-shifting. Yes, homophobia is a problem in Pakistan, but that’s something Pakistanis will have to work on for many years to come. This sort of change doesn’t come by patronizing articles that seek to portray Pakistanis as sex-crazed morons.

Fighting for equality for all is something we all need to work for. But in the meantime, we also need to respond to racism. How else do you think Pakistanis or Indians get such a bad rep abroad? Just ask anyone studying in Boarding hostels, Madrassas and most of all the Conductors of Buses and Trucks especially the younger ones and the reality will be the most horrendous for you.

As a muslim country and a Muslim majority population, (even other religious communities dont promote homosexuality), it is unfortunate how we are defending the rights of gays and lesbians. We have all forgotten how one nation was punished by Allah, Qaum e Loot for their gays lesbians relationships, and today we act that these people are the most vulnerable in our community. Recommend

Everyone loves to watch porn , Including male and females . Asian society is different from Western society , where they have legal freedom of sex after a certain age and they don’t mind these things , even prostitution is legalized there . All Asian societies including the developed Japanese and Korean society , consider it a taboo though they don’t have any laws forbidding it (excluding the conservative Islamic society ) and rage for internet pornography is high . Even now a days , live-in relation is so common in my society ,nobody would like to turn on a computer for porn videos .Ignore these media. But Until Gays and Lesbians are not given their rights , they will use internet for their timepass.Recommend

  • Anil

    @Josh
You should divide it into two sections and analyze it separately . I am agreed to your point of “porn hits on google” and I think you have a point to explain why such hits are more in Pakistan or India , though I am not fully convinced . But What Mother Jones explains regarding homosexuality is also very true . Arrival of Conservative Islam is to be blamed for these . Sexuality and nudity is not new for us , specially for those who are inventors of kamsutra or Tantric sex . We even take pride in those things . I think Mother Jones explain such things .What I found is you are trying to hijack the whole findings. Mother Jones has only discussed about gay and lesbian porn, they haven’t discussed anything about General porn and you are trying to justify why porn hits (General porn) are more.Again I didn’t find them racist , they have only discussed about a society which is the most conservative through out the article.I think you have completely misunderstood the writer’s thoughts. This is what he writes “So very often, any attempt to open a dialogue in the Arab region is branded as some ‘Western conspiracy’ to undermine traditional Arab and Muslim values. The reality is that long before the West was talking openly about homosexuality, Arabs in particular were writing about this very frankly. Our history has come to be rewritten by Islamic conservatives” . Can you imagine ,some women still prefer to remain under a black gown in 20th century ? Mother Jones is absolutely right and if you hadn’t given us their link , I would have blindly believed you Recommend

  • Sarah

Sure, a google trend search is not the perfect way to see who watches the most porn, but if you read the mother jones article, the writer never makes that claim.

Yes, Americans consume porn from porn sites instead of search engines, but isn’t the fact that we are leading the search for certain types of gay porn significant?

Talk to someone from Peshawar, and chances are they will tell you they have heard of someone having gay sex, that watching gay porn is common, and that most of that article makes sense. Why is it so hard for you to hear that from Mother Jones? Because the writer’s American?

Nobody called anybody “sex-crazed.” You’re putting words in that writer’s mouth, and you would be furious if someone did the same to you. Recommend

  • A. Khan

Josh : You have obviously done significant “research” on the porn websites to claim to know all about them, how many there are and the average duration of the clips on them.

Be that as it may, your premise that there is a grand conspiracy to smear Pakistan’s ..er.. good name by showing that it ranks the highest in terms of porn searches. Pakistanis search for gay porn, so what ? Live with it. Don’t make it an issue of national (or should that be gay ?) pride.

” Portraying the man of colour as a lesser being than the White man to justify the colonisation of their lands started centuries ago and is quite well-documented.” Where exactly did you say you were living ? • Raj

The article is completely out of line with the issue (and of course the heading). The real issue here is use of porn (whether gay or otherwise). The issue here is not that everybody use it… the issue here is why do Pakistanis do it. The writer gave an example of the US being the biggest industry of pornography and yet people do not Google but the writer has not given the reason for that. The real reason is because porn is allowed in the US or UK, people don’t need to search porn over the internet and pleasurize themselves. Pakistan and other states (who consider their culture is a big part of lives including India) have banned a lot of things over the years and are still banning them. For me, the more you try to stop in a specific society, the more it will prevalent. A classic example being alcohol. Because it is banned, people try to drink it by foul means and i m sure everyone here know how much pak people consume alcohol in pakistan (whether being real or fake one). Look at India, porn is banned and people do not have access to pleasurize themselves and therefore the rate of Rape has increased quite considerably. I am not saying by any means that porn should be allowed but it all has to do with better education plans in the school. Still teachers and students hesitate to talk about sex education. the moment you allow sex as a part of education, these things will go down.

P.S. alot of people here are being angered by the hatred towards gay people but the article does not seems any hatred towards gay. the real issue is not gay people but the issue is porn in the society. Im sure attitude towards gay is an issue but here its porn and not gay people. Recommend

    @Spigot !:
for your information. Love is love when its two way. pedophilia is not two way process my friend. its a kind of sickening disease that people do without the knowledge of the child. so stop comparing that to gay people. i do not support gays but i am not against them as well. the society evolves over time. there are a lot of things that our ancestors would think should not be allowed but for us that is completely permissible. but the real point is “who are we to decide what is right and wrong”. If you are saying Islam tells that then I am sorry to say but how many of us understand real islam. If they understand it, then why all the muslim people at the moment are involved in most of the corruption, sex groups, killing, terrorism etc. I am not saying others are not involved but others don’t have Islam (if we go by your understanding). Muslims have guidance and still we do not pray 5 times, we do all kind of corruptions (small or big) etc so please stop saying that Islam is against gay people. Society is evolving and its good that we accept it otherwise we will encounter countless stuffs like gay porn in the society. Recommend

Have you ever wondered why people are against gay rights? It’s because being gay is NOT a physical imbalance or chemical anomaly in the brain. It is just deviance, turned into a belief because of social and cultural anomalies. Gay men and women are mostly “straight” people who for some reason believe they are different and refuse to explore that feeling. Some have either had traumatic experiences with the other gender as kids, or never had much exposure of their own gender (fatherless sons or ones whose fathers never had time for family may end up being gay because of a lack of male love in their childhood etc, having a peer group of the opposite gender throughout early life can do this too). The point here is that homosexuality is not as much a physiological malformation as a psychological disorder.
