Tahirul Qadri’s increasing popularity

Published: December 26, 2012

It’s amazing how quickly a leader or an ideology can win over the country’s youth. As I headed to office one fine day, I confronted an excited youth from our neighbourhood who said,

“I am going to Lahore to attend a jalsa on December 23!”

I was startled. Knowing that the young man had exams coming up, I asked him how he’ll manage the trip. His reply was,

“I’ll skip exams. This public gathering by Dr Tahirul Qadri is so much more important.”

I drowned into thought. The young man’s enthusiasm reflected that of thousands of people across the country. Several young people flocked down to Lahore from cities all over the country to attend Qadri’s jalsa, reminding me of the initial days of Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan’s popularity. Khan’s jalsas were attended by youth who were just as confident of his rise as a promising leader.

Leading the youth to political activism is a feat achieved by both Khan and Qadri. Of course, believing that either leader can do anything to alter the youth’s future, or the future of Pakistan, borders on fancifulness. But it seems that we, and specially our youth, are still keen to cling on to hope no matter what.

However, regardless of whether these leaders are loyal, or if their rise is just a transitory hype, the favourable outcome is a renewed sense of unity. This has been observed in both Khan and Qadri. Owing to these leaders, the youth of Pakistan has become increasingly conscious of the country’s political state and its current affairs.

Furthermore, attending jalsas seems to be a great social boon in itself: it helps overpower social divide, as youth from all classes unite, and share the realisation that Pakistan’s current crisis needs their attention.

Several people who went to Lahore for Qadri’s jalsa resided in temporary camps in the freezing cold and some of them rented rooms in hotels. The zeal seemed magnetic; a true reflection of how much hope and faith is vested in leaders.

Needless to say, one jasla cannot change the future of the country, or bring a revolution. But undoubtedly, Dr Tahirul Qadri is a prominent religious scholar and like Imran Khan is winning popularity just because there is hope, just because the people of this country want to see change.

More than anything, the reason behind the large turnout of educated youth behind emerging mainstream politicians is escape. There’s no other source of entertainment in this country (the only one I can think of, which is accessible to everyone, is eating out) and the media chooses to rain us with tragedy upon tragedy. Youth want change and a symbol of hope – even if it’s just a show and even if figures like Tahir ul Qadri are nothing more than words, just knowing that you can be part of an event where people from all classes are uniting for a common purpose of betterment provides a satisfying escape from reality for most young people (at no cost, and the free food at the jalsas also helps).Recommend

Ishrat Baji, U have enough time to write on Tahir ul Qadri. No doubt he is a great scholar and I was a listener to his sermons during my student life but he failed in politics. In 2007, journalists had gathered at Nathiagali where an Islamabad-based senior journalist friend informed us that people of Punjab want change and their choice is Imran Khan. Punjab people were fed up with the PMLN and the PPP. But, in 2008 elections, you saw who won? Imran Khan boycotted but that did not affect the turnout. One of our blogger friend Mr. Rajar wrote on change through Pir Pagara. I had commented on that. Now, Pir Pagara’s Punjab chapter president has been picked by President Zardari as Governor Punjab. I want to ask from Rajar and his proponents where do u see change through PMLF and his Pir Pagara? They are part and parcel of President Zardari led system. Facts remain: electoral politics is something different. Recommend

The only reason I wouldn’t have any problem with Tahirul Qadri running all this campaign is his presence during The Amman Message and few other scholars from India and Pakistan were also present over there.People in Pakistan definitely need to read the Grand Declaration in order to create an atmosphere of harmony in their country.

Apart from that,I don’t find him trustworthy.Humanitarian work by Minhajul Quran,KKF,Edhi,SKMH etc… should indeed be appreciated despite political differences but one can always wonder why he showed up just few months prior to the elections.MQM’s sudden announcement to show their support for him also puts question mark.

Moreover,Qadri has his own share of controversies attached with him as a speaker/scholar too. Recommend

I have worked very closely with Qadri for over 13 years covering his religious and political stints. He possess good understanding of Islam and have been given the capability to preach and attract people in the name of God and His Prophet. The disturbing part is that he is publicity hungry and an ego-maniac. He loves self praise and anyone contradicting his thoughts finds his/ her way out in due course. These are absolutely not the qualities of a leader. Most of all, he is not brave guy, has his own skin saved through Canadian nationality and will not spare a second in flying back to his country of choice the moment he feels that he will be put under house arrest even!

Qaid-e-Azam held dual nationality and he founded Pakistan. What’s the problem with Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri having dual nationality when he’s going to SAVE Pakistan. He will take Pakistan back from the hands of these corrupt, monopolistic despots who have caused its continual downfall for decades! Against background of tyranny, suffering and unjust treatment for millions of indigenous Pakistanis, Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri is the only beacon of hope for Pakistan who will guide this nation towards a brighter future!!
And as for Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri being ‘ushered in’, he has been working diligently since the 1980s to steer Pakistan in a direction for REAL change. Not being physically present does not insinuate that all his time and effort has been directed anywhere else, but towards the betterment of Pakistan. As Kenneth Blanchard states ‘The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority’, so research Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri’s activities in the West’s reception of his ‘Fatwa on Terrorism’, and see how much influence he really has in terms of changing Western perceptions of the East! Listen from 6:42 onwards to this interview Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri gave on GEO News, fully demystifying such misconceptions and leaving no trace of doubt about his dual nationality, and his so-called ‘ushered’ Recommend

Both Qadri and Khan have always been popular since the 80’s. Qadri was doted by many senior religious figures in preference to other mawlanas due to his capabilities and zeal. He attracted the masses at that time through their backing, his exceptional oratory skills and knowledge. Khan was also very popular as he took the Pakistan cricket team to win the world cup against all odds. However, he then became more of a celebrity owing to his newly found fame and that is always accompanied with bagage and controversy. He lost popularity after going through different relationships and ending up with Jemima. From this period, he ofter kept close to controversial right wing religious groups such as Jamaat e Islami. This link only weakened recently following threats to his own life from then Taliban. Khan still has the charisma of his prime cricketing days. He appears to have shaken off the controversies of the past attracting many to support his message.
Just as Khan reached his peak a year ago, Qadri has succenly taken the stage by storm. This took everyone by surprise but his reach is well beyond Pakistan. Religious scholars, students and universities throughout the Muslim world recognise him as the leading Muslim authority.
Can they unite? If they did, a powerful unstopable political force would develope that would certainly clean up the country. Practical, I doubt if they can unite. Qadri wants to set up some sort of caretaker government which would be made up of technocrats. Neither Khan nor 90% of present politicians would qualify for such roles. Khan would have to drop his political ambitions were he to join. He may well consider the good of the nation over his own personal progression and join Qadri but that doesn’t look likely. As for Qadri, he posses a Phd and so potentally could even head such a government if he suceeds in overcoming obstacles from the corrupt system.Recommend

    Impartial Commentary:

I think that all corrupt political parties are trying to divert the attention of Pakistani Nation from the real agenda of Mr. Qadri by speaking against his personality, expenses in the gathering and about questioning about his credibility. Infact the Agend of Mr. Qadri is the voice of whole Nation to change the system of elections in which middle class people can not participate and the real representatives can not enter in Assembalies. The current system of Elections is very suitable only for 2 parties therefore both parties do not want any change in the system while Mr. Qadri is of this opinion to change the system first and then to go for elections otherwise all those corrupt politics will come in the Assembalies once again.
on the other hand, the intentions of IMRAN KHAN & Dr. Qadri are the same and are good Dr. Qadri wants to play on a plain and straight pitch. If Dr. Qadri himself does not participate in the elections, it means that he is cleaning the path of Good, True and Honest Politicians like IMRAN KHAN. The reason why Dr.qadri is gaining popularity is that he is only a personality in Pakistan who succeeded in diagnosing the real diesease which has been retarding the country’s progress for more than sixty years. He hit the nail on the head that this corrupt monopolistic electoral system is bone of contention. His demand of electoral reforms are not only his but of whole Pakistani nation. People who don’t want reforms and just screaming for election are scared since they know if reforms are made, they will be disqualified because these so-called democratic leaders are very far from fulfulling the conditionality of Constitution of Pakistan. Dr. Tahir ul Qadri’s agenda is pro-democracy and working for restoring true democracy in Pakistan.
The Pakistan has fullfilled all conditions of a failing economy and heading towards failed or collapsed economy. Now this is a high time to bring reforms so that honest and competent leadership come forward and help in flourishing pakistan.
