Mera Yaqeen: A massive letdown by Sarmad Khoosat

Mera Yaqeen has nothing to offer but good acting. It isn't the kind of work you would expect from Sarmad Khoosat.

Sarmad Khoosat is among the most famous drama directors in our country today. He won back all those fans with Shehr-e-Zaat that he had lost thanks to the despicable Ashk.

However, Mera Yaqeen ─  Sarmad's recent offering to ARY Digital ─ wasn't among the most awaited serials. Some insiders say that the makers had lost hope by the time they saw the end product, which is why it was never promoted the way every Sarmad Khoosat product, starring such big names, would be promoted.

Nevertheless, it tells the story of a happy family, Asfand and Maha (played by Faisal Qureshi and Savera Nadeem, respectively) who are married and have children.

(Maha and Asfand)

The family goes through a major shock when Savera's character meets an accident and is left paralysed and restricted to bed. Unable to take care of her family, she turns to her best friend, Nazish (played by Nimra Bucha), who has been divorced twice already, and asks her to marry Asfand, her husband, so that someone is there to take care of the family.

(Nazish and the children)

Nazish enters the family and things go wrong soon when she inadvertently starts getting closer to the husband - the first wife obviously goes through her predictable pangs of jealousy.

This is a story that doesn't even sound compelling on paper.

The thin plot just doesn't offer anything. I wonder what potential the production house (A&B), and director Sarmad saw in this. The writer Seema Munaf really does not do well here; she writes about strong characters, but gives them nothing to do in the serial!

Drama serials with two women fighting for a man can be compelling, but she just does not write scenes that catch your attention. For example, the misery of the husband is left ignored. The true potential of the story has not been explored enough in script.

After a point you realise that there is nothing interesting happening in this show; there is just no deeper message to be delivered to the audience. The side tracks also look forced! Why did they have to show Nazish getting married twice? It was fatally obvious that she would get divorced (stupid promos!). The whole thing could have been wrapped up in three episodes, but it was stretched to almost seven or eight.

The story, thus, moves at a pace that is torturous.

Having said as much, the soundtrack, which never got a proper release, is kind of different and refreshing.

The editing is fine, but the direction by Sarmad lacks the touch he is famous for. He is let down by a sorry script, but extracts great performances out of everyone.

Acting is the only thing that this serial scores in. Faisal Qureshi - even though he reminds you of Nadeem Saheb - is really convincing in his role. He is one of those few actors who can shine even in a mediocre serial. Savera Nadeem too, although she is restricted to bed, steals the scenes whenever she appears on screen. She has given a great performance and has proven that she can give any performer a run for the money.

Farhan Ali Agha, however, just bores you to death with his never-changing dialogue delivery. The rest of the cast (including the children, even though I don't like how the son behaves) is excellent.

Over all, Mera Yaqeen has nothing to offer other than good acting. The serial has no story line and the writer has written a terribly dull screenplay. You automatically lose interest after a few episodes.

Disappointing at best!
