Enemies of Pakistan: Now on Facebook

Published: September 17, 2012

Extreme attracts extreme. PHOTO: AFP

The uproar over the anti-Islam ‘film’ (if it can really be called a film) has finally become a fad for Pakistan’s youth. It’s hip. Its trendy now, and I can say this with surety, because its finally all over my Facebook wall.

If ever there was proof that social media is simply a tool reflecting the community that wields it, and not some glorious tool towards progressive change, that time for Pakistanis is now.

First I got the seemingly harmless (although the stat cited is obviously just cooked up) viral image demanding the removal of the video from YouTube:

I decided to follow the image to the actual page that my friend shared it from.

Catchy title: Enemies of Pakistan. Here are some more images they have created, with hundreds of shares to each:

At this point, I am starting to get a trifle worried about the campaign that seems to be emanating from here. Fascinated, I keep exploring…

India? What does India have to do with this?

Someone has obviously gone to a lot of effort putting these together. I know because my team works on such viral images as well, and it requires someone dedicated for anywhere from 20-45 minutes to make one of these. I’m starting to wonder about the agenda here, and about the language being used with some of the posts. For example:

These are the pigs of the anti Islamic movie “INNOCENCE OF MUSLIM” who are also involved in insulting our beloved Prophet Muhammed peace be upon him. Share as much as you can.
1 LIKE = 10 SLAP

Extreme attracts extreme. I’m now more interested in some of the people responding to these images in the comments section. I follow a few of them through to their profile pages to see what other content they are consuming and liking. I see this image being passed around the community, calling for the murder of the film maker for a large bounty:

It is a trifle chilling to see how quickly, and how far I’ve come from my Facebook wall. It is also terrifying to think that my cousins, nephews and nieces, all on Facebook and in their teens, could very easily get here too. I keep browsing community members of Enemies of Pakistan, and inevitably it leads me to increasingly violent demands – all through viral imagery:

Emotive, unethical (using the images of random children) and extremely successful, the above image calling for burning US and Israeli embassies/consulates is making the rounds on Facebook. I could stop now, but there is a lot more going on in this community. One of the images above was shared from Jaan qurban sipah e sahaba dera ismail khan (Life sacrifice Sipah-e-Sahaba Dera Ismail Khan). I’m intrigued to find such a localised online community for a banned outfit. Yes they have the basic curses for the film maker:

But they also have a very unsavory group of friends sharing some very unsavory things. I have crossed over to yet another group of the SSP and I find an image with by far the greatest number of shares and likes yet (almost 5,000 shares):

Its hard to keep in mind I am on Facebook. I have written before about the fact that social media may be isolating people so they only see and experience things according to their preferences, thus polarizing society and perpetuating/creating greater divides. At this point, I am really scared, but I keep going – thinking less now, just absorbing the images one after another in silence… some are impossible to share here. I explore for another 20 minutes and then go back to my news feed. There I find this image waiting for me:

I don’t know how to react.

Very true. Its all over on Facebook. After every five minutes your wall will be filled with such kind of hatred speech. One Example.
“Curse on Pakistan government and PTA for not banning YouTube. If you are true Muslim then will share it and if you did not share it may Allah cruse on you”. What would you do. They are playing with your emotion and blackmailing youth if they don’t share or like it then they do love their Prophet. And our youth became their prey easily.
If you starts convincing your friends that s/he just shared creates hatred among communities and our Prophet (SAW) never taught us to act like that. But s/he will not think for a moment and straight away tag you as infidel.
Never in my dreams i though that social media have negative consequences. But spreading these pictures on Facebook and YouTube I am totally against freedom of speech in Pakistan. Jihadi and banned outfits are taking full advantage of spreading their hatred speech and our youth are sharing their hatred very proudly.
Its the responsibility of government either to ban such kind of hatred material or completely ban all social networks. The situation is going beyond our hands. It needs serious attention. Facebook in Pakistan is like Mullah of Sipa e Sahaba or other extremist group. Recommend

They should know that back then in May 2010, when PAKISTAN & Other MUSLIM COUNTRIES boycotted Facebook on such similar blasphemy, Facebook had to Remove that particular Blasphemous EVENT. I don’t issue & believe in Fatwas against Muslims belonging to other sects either. And at the same time, I love & respect my Holy Prophet (PBUH) with all my heart, and can never tolerate a single bad word about him. It is this love for him that makes me stay away from all such e-mails, messages, websites and movies. You have failed to prove me wrong, instead gave a generalized answer.

You look at your country, your country produced one of the geniuses named Abdus Salam. What did you do with him? Declared him non-muslim, forced him out of the country and even vandalized his grave.

The other day someone gave me the example of Mohammed Younus. He is another genius. India has borrowed so much from his experience. What happened to him in the end? He was stripped off of his title and marginalized and criminal charges slapped on him.

My friend, I don’t believe that a religion/race/ethnicity/sect can produce brilliant people and the others are failures.

My point is, muslims have always (since millennia) lived a violent, ignorant, extremist culture. This is true to even this day. This culture is even prevalent among the muslims of India. However, as a minority who cannot enforce this culture on the entire nation, honest/hardworking muslims thrive.

But in muslim countries, you self destroy. This is a fact my friend. You cannot disprove it.Recommend

It’s not hard to imagine the actual figure being even higher given the massive size of the Pakistani market but in the grand scheme of things, it won’t really make much of a difference. Google’s revenues this year are something to the tune of $40 billion so losing out on a $500 million(1.25%) market will have a pretty minimal effect on them.

On topic, Pakistani Muslims and the greater Muslim world can protest all they want but very little will be accomplished because Muslims, even though they constitute roughly 24% of the world’s populations, are of very little importance to the world in general. They constitute less than 7% of the world’s economy, don’t produce anything of note without which the world will not survive(with the exception of oil but even there they don’t have an absolute monopoly nor the military means to defend themselves if the west decides to take over the resources by force in a desperate situation), don’t have the military power to take out a single American carrier battle group let alone the combined forces of the western world and don’t really contribute anything positive to the world in general.

I think Pakistani Government should approach these filthy rich Jan-nisars of Holy Prophet SAW and beg them in his name to pay the loans owed by Pakistan. These loans will be less than 0.01 percent of the amount posted but will definitely help Pakistan become free of external shekels. I think People of Pakistan deserve this favor.Recommend

@alicia: “Can someone actually tell me if Google does 500 million dollar business in Pakistan and can Pakistans blocking of google have any affect??”

There was an article on ET that initially indicated that Google’s revenue from Pakistan was $500 million. @jamshedd questioned this number by stating that$500 million is the TOTAL ad revenue from all souces, digital, TV, newspapers, outdoor etc @Imtiaz clarified that the total digital ad revenue from Pakistan was $5-6 million and goole’s revenue would be a subset of that. ET acknowledged their error.

(FOr reference please read this article http://tribune.com.pk/story/434461/up-and-coming-google-pakistan-earns-500-million-in-revenue/ and the comments from @jamshedd and @imtiaz.

    Hope that helps.Recommend

I think the amount offered is $10 trillion; kind of amazing, as the United States entire production output for a year is above $13 trillion. Did I miss the memo that granted madressahs the right to print currency or what?Recommend

@gp65. I don’t know how much Google makes in Pakistan – I do know that after Pakistan banned Youtube the stock of Google went up – that would indicate that shareholders are not concerned about threats from Pakistan.Recommend

Re-read what I wrote in my answer to you again. No where did I mention anything about the rest of what you stated in your post; the ONLY part I addressed was your view that no Muslim has ever achieved anything unless under non-Muslims. No where did I deny what may come next, nor did I defend it. Nor did I imply an answer to anything else you stated. You have your opinion. I have mine. I made a simple statement that seems a bit difficult for you to grasp OR you simply can not miss an opportunity to express your rather condescending views against Muslims as you have many, many times in the past. You don’t like us. We get it. Any more on that? Do tell please. And try reading my response again. I can’t put it any simpler. Good luck and cheers. Recommend

What is the point of all these debates ?

Protest against this movie is right or wrong ?

For me if i follow the Hadees (you will not be true momin until you love Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) more than your children , parents and your beloved one.

Expressing your love against someone you have to act, but being a Muslim this is our great responsibility to follow the teaching of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Start protest within your self by stop falling under others agenda.

I think the agenda behind this movie is more likely successful, they got the result how they wanted to.

Blocking YouTube, Facebook etc. will not change the reality that on the other hands we are begging in-front of them to feed us.

In Pakistan what we are sharing we don’t know exactly, but expecting more LIKES or SHARE hit to satisfy our-self regardless of the outcome.Recommend

HE was sent as a mercy to mankind. Forgiving, Generous, Gentle, Trustworthy, Truthful, kind to childres, elders, muslim and non-muslim alike. Don’t express your love for Muhammad PBUH by spewing hatred towards those who don’t believe in him. Express it by following his character and his teachings and let the world know that in reality its not #Muslimrage, rather its # Americanhate!Recommend

. emphasized textThe West lectures the world on free speech yet make any material critical of Jews punishable by law.

You are wrong. Living in the West, we can criticise Judaism and Israeli’s all we want. No problem, we can do the same with Christians, Buddhists and Non-believers as well.

But what we can’t do and what is illegal is to encourage others to go and kill them. That is illegal and immoral.

    Can you understand the difference?

he intended the film to be provocative because he wanted the world to see how Islam is (God forbid) a cancer and viola! we played right into his hands.emphasized text

The most insightful comment yet. He childishly provokes Muslims and they respond like children as he expected. Lot of growing up to do here.
