Dead to Me is not as novel as Big Little Lies yet it’s hard to resist its charm

Tinged with flavours of crime and mystery, the female-led comedy-drama has risen triumphantly and blessed us with some very intriguing television series over the last few years. With fierce women in the driving seat, shows like Killing Eve, Big Little Lies and Good Girls have captivated viewers with their fascinating characters, interesting twists and dark wit. What happened to the Bitcoin hype, and why it’s time to invest in it

Two years ago, a phenomenon known as Bitcoin gained hype across the globe, including in Pakistan. Anyone with even a modicum of tech knowledge was head over heels to invest in it, and it seemed unstoppable. Fast forward to the present, the hype seems to have vanished and Bitcoin is rarely the centre of discussion now. Back then, Bitcoin sounded like a method to make easy money, but investors soon became wary of the challenges associated with it. While Bitcoin was still making space in Pakistan in 2017, the cryptocurrency seemed to offer promising returns at a global level. The price was ...

Younis Khan and PCB couldn’t reach an agreement – whose loss is it?

Just a few days ago, talks between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and former Test captain Younis Khan, for the appointment of the latter as the coach of the Under-19 Pakistan cricket team, fell through. Unconfirmed sources claim that the demands Younis made with respect to his remuneration was one of the deal breakers. The other bone of contention was the authority Younis had insisted on for his role as the coach, which included a very strong say in matters of selection as well. The PCB, apparently, only wants a coach who can just be around the team and guide ...

Why single-sex schools are failing your children

Recently, I came across diaries of mine from my mid-teenage years. For close to a year, nine out of my 10 diary entries revolved around some boy or another, while the rest revolved around the intensity of my self-hatred because of how the opposite gender made me feel. There were a few entries scattered throughout concerning friends and family, but that was about it. What put me off was that even after flipping through multiple entries it was difficult to come across actual events from the year. All that particular years’ diary covers is boys and their affect on ...

Pakistan’s wildlife: Going, going, gone!

As we go about our busy lives, completely dependent on fossil fuels from the vehicles that transport us to the houses we live in electrified by thermal power plants, we remain blissfully ignorant of the damage resource extraction and unchecked development has done to the flora and fauna of our planet. How conveniently we look the other way as yet another housing estate gobbles up even more rural land and old trees are cut down to make way for roads! Scientists have now rung the alarm bells that we humans are driving the sixth mass extinction on Earth. A new ...

Hilarious and exciting, Detective Pikachu reminds us why he is the favourite Pokémon

The video game adaptation curse has been haunting Hollywood for quite a while now. Many studios have tried to break this curse by only producing movies based on highly popular video game franchises, but none of them have been able to check all the required boxes. No one has yet delivered an entertaining movie which is sincere to the game itself and is also able to please diehard fans. This is precisely why films based on games such as Assassin’s Creed, Mario Brothers, Warcraft, Prince of Persia, Need for Speed, and Hitman, among others, have all either flopped badly ...

The TV host has apologised to Nasir Khan Jan. Now it’s your turn, Pakistan

The easy part is over. We must now find our own reflection in Muhammad Shueb’s behaviour and apologise for our own classist and chauvinistic worldview. In a recent viral interview, Shueb, who is a television anchor, berated internet sensation Nasir Khan Jan for his “vulgar” videos. The interview was conducted in an insufferably prudish and invasive manner, inviting comparisons to Maya Khan’s moral posse many years ago. Shueb brought up a video of Jan dancing in a bathroom towel, saying that, “For you it could be entertainment. For me, it’s not!” As Shueb made this declaration, it’s quite possible that he heard in ...

An open letter to conservative father and cricket icon Shahid Afridi

Dear Shahid Afridi, One must appreciate your energy, which helps you stay in the news despite having retired from mainstream cricket a long time ago. Now some people are criticising the political comments you made over bigwigs in the cricket world. Frankly, you may know better there; they are not my concern. ...
