We crowned Wasim Akram, so why question the existence of spot-fixing in Pakistan now?

The latest news is that the World Cup opener Nasir Jamshed has been arrested alongside a bookie by Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) in London. By the time this blog is published, one can only imagine what other new developments will have taken place. As is now common knowledge, Sharjeel Khan and Khalif Latif are already in hot water. There are also suspicions casted on other players, including Mohammad Irfan, who is currently under investigation. Nasir Jamshed.Photo : BCCI I would normally take anything the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) says with a grain of salt, but PCB official Najam Sethi is adamant that the evidence is damning. It certainly ...

John Wick: Chapter 2 is as entertaining as an action movie can get

John Wick: Chapter 2 is the sequel to the 2014 hit action thriller with the same name. This second coming of the lead protagonist, played by Keanu Reeves, as a retired yet highly skilled assassin emulates the same neo-noir action scenes combined with highly stylised close quarters fighting and gun sequences. Unlike its predecessor, it lacks to exhibit the same grit and originality of the prequel but it is an entertaining chapter in the franchise nonetheless. This movie is directed by Chad Stahelski, who is also the co-director of the first part, along with David Leitch. John Wick: Chapter 2 is bolder and more brutal when it comes ...

Is FC Barcelona out of this year’s Champions League?

February 14, 2017, will be a lasting memory in the mind of every Paris Saint Germain (PSG) fan for years to come. In a historic night at the Parc des Princes in Paris, PSG completely blew away Spanish giants FC Barcelona and more or less confirmed their place in the quarter-final of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) 2016-17. I was stabbed 23 times, and yet he walks around a free man

About 10 months ago, on May 3, 2016, I experienced an inconceivable and petrifying incident that changed my life forever. It sends shivers down my spine every time the fateful scene replays in my mind. It was an act beyond the wildest contemplation of any normal being. That one brief moment is etched in my mind like a nightmare I just can’t wake up from. The telephone rang and the voice on the other end of the line delivered a hammer blow. His ears buzzed, his pulse fluttered and he fell to the ground upon hearing what the man said: “Your daughter has ...

Why nobody wants to help Myanmar’s unwanted Rohingya

The international community has largely ignored the political situation regarding the Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar. The Rohingya have been systematically disenfranchised and persecuted in their home state of Myanmar, having been denied the rights of citizenship, worship, marriage and education. Since 2012, the Rohingya have been subjected to numerous acts of violence by the Buddhist majority leading to hundreds of deaths, destruction of property, and a mass exodus of Rohingya with estimates stating that around 100,000 are living in internment camps and 200,000 more residing in unofficial camps in Bangladesh. In 2013, mosques and Muslim-owned businesses were destroyed by a 300-member mob in central Myanmar in a series of ...

Why marriage is not for everyone

There are more routes to happiness than those identified by the social majority. It is time we acknowledge that not all of these routes transit through the terminal of marriage. Any discussion on whether a certain custom is right for you, must begin with an honest recognition of your primary goal. The goal is your happiness and prosperity, and nothing that any parent, uncle, aunty, friend has to say about it has any agency over your own awareness of what brings you contentment. Their counsel may be wise and worthy, but they have the disadvantage of not knowing you the way you might ...

Is this martyrdom? No, it’s massacre

Oh our land of pure, How much shall you endure? How many shall you allure? To your depths so demure, When will your thirst be quenched? Of blood and sweat and gore. Jamaatul Ahrar, a faction of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility for a deadly bomb attack that shook the cultural capital of the country yesterday. The senseless killing of 15 people, including decorated police officials DIG Capt (retd) Ahmad Mubeen and SSP Zahid Ikram Godal, has left the nation in mourning. How many more such attacks shall we mourn as a nation? The reverberating sound of explosions, shrapnel-ridden limbs scattered on roads and the air thick ...

Of the Lahore blast and PTI’s real “achievements”

The city of my birth, Lahore, is bleeding again. Many are shocked and have condemned it in strong words, while some have reiterated their pledge that the fight against extremism would go on – both Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Bajwa made strong statements of condemnation. With respect to fight against extremism, military and civilian leadership seems to be on the same page. Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has very strongly condemned the blast that occurred at Charing Cross Lahore. — PML(N) (@pmln_org) February 13, 2017 However, reactions from some quarters were unfortunately petty. One of ...

Will this be the year for the Karachi Kings? Probably not

Kya Karachi jeetay ga? (Will Karachi win?) Well, so far it has been the other way round; the Karachi Kings have not been able to do justice to their slogan. Having lost the first couple of matches in the second edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), the Kings are looking down the barrel and are desperate for a win. The Kings had pinned their high hopes on their explosive opener Chris Gayle, however, like last season, when he represented the Lahore Qalandars, the King of T20 cricket is yet to find his feet in PSL as he struggles to score freely at the top. Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya: Another DDLJ-inspired Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya?

I am all for nostalgia. I am all for reviving things which have been lost to oblivion. That still does not mean you bring back Rana Navedul Hasan and make him Pakistan’s Test captain and then make him centre of your team’s imagery. ‘Tamma Tamma’ is not as old as Rana. It is, nonetheless, 27-years-old. The current generation has recently been fed with many a song from the 90s and 80s in almost every other movie. The most recent one being ‘Laila o Laila’ where Sunny Leone tries to save a sinking ship called Raees. However, Leone is no Zeenat Aman, just like Alia Bhatt is no Madhuri Dixit. Rest assured, the recent ‘Tamma Tamma Again’ is ...
