The length of my sleeves has nothing to do with my ghairat

A university in Faisalabad has decided to impose a clothing restriction on its students and staff. Like always, the opinions on it have now been divided into the two most common categories: the beyghairat (shameless) liberals and the ghairat brigade (moral brigade). The beyghairat liberals argue that such a code is superfluous and ridiculous. They believe that enforcing such a code is unnecessary considering that the students are adults; they can decide for themselves what is right and wrong. They don’t need a code like this to try enforcing such decisions. The ghairat brigade supports the implementation of a dress code, ...

LUMS will most definitely change you, not necessarily for the better

“LUMS is the Harvard of Pakistan”, echo the tangled throng of prospective students and parents all across the country. You take the self-proclaimed mission statement of the university to “achieve excellence and national and international leadership” at face value and assume that this is the best place to educate yourself. Should you be lucky enough to get a one-way ticket to four years at this prestigious institution, you will find yourself amidst a swarm of other sweat-stained, bright lanyard-sporting students in the heat of August during Orientation Week. During this week, you will hear every misrepresentation of this university in the book and more. Within ...

I partied at 1am… with these delicious chocolate chip and peanut butter cupcakes!

I love birthdays, whether it’s mine (preferred) or anyone else’s. I get very excited – the countdown to the day type of excited. I’m basically five-years-old again with my level of excitement, but I figure it is one day of the year that is entirely yours, so enjoy it. Get as much as you can out of it and have fun with family and friends. So in the spirits of birthdays, a friend recently celebrated his 30th – big deal and all of that. It was a great reason to bake something delicious (though one doesn’t really need reasons to bake other ...

Beware documentarians: If it shows the truth, the Pakistani government will ban it!

It is said that whenever the gods want to destroy someone they take their intellect or aql as we would call it. If this saying is anything to go by, I can definitely say that the gods are hell bent on destroying our peace loving and pak (pure) nation. They have bestowed us with the most nationalistic bureaucracy and patriotic politicians that can ever be. If there is anything that happens against the motherland, they are there to save it from evil. They will mow down any finger that points, cut out any tongue that wags and gouge out any ...

It doesn’t matter if it’s Trump, Clinton or Bernie, we still have to prepare for the worst

Donald Trump comes off as an obnoxious racist who is not only capable of mocking a disabled journalist, but talks about banning Muslims from the US and introducing Nazi style ID cards to track Muslims. But he is not solely to blame for this. Trump is a product of a society that has been subjected to virulent anti-Muslim propaganda for over a decade. This has been witnessed through news reports, Hollywood movies and dramas – backed up by right wing think tanks and politicians. Various Wall Street bankers have looted the country to the extent that over 45 million Americans are living on food stamps ...

Considering all the new changes taking place in the cricket circuit, most fans will be expecting a ...

Allahu Akbar goes viral for all the wrong reasons

It was 8:31 am on Tuesday, I was tuned into BBC Radio 4 and the wet weather had succeeded in dampening my spirits already. When I arrived at my work car-park, however, I was fortunate enough to find my favourite parking slot open! Grinning at my sheer luck, I started parking my car. It is by default that I remain tuned into BBC Radio 4 whilst driving to and from work; perhaps because I subconsciously imply that BBC is comparatively more amenable to common sense and takes a (mostly) balanced approach to otherwise polarised themes. Yesterday, however, after having parked my car, I reached out for my ...

Hitchcock: The artist who wrote stories with a camera

“Today we admit that a Hitchcock movie may be as important in art history as the publication of books by Gide or Aragon” (French-Swiss film critic Jean-Luc Godard) This work of art is like a pure paradise for those moviegoers who love to watch the Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock’s surrealist impressions, logic of dreams, sensitivity, vulnerability and lonesomeness. Writer-cum-director Kent Jones’ latest venture is an insightful documentary about eight-day long meticulous interview of Hitchcock by French film critic, director, and the founder of the French New Wave, Francois Truffaut. The interview was conducted almost 50 years ago, in 1962, and after ...

Bohra men must speak up to save their daughters from female circumcision

The fatwa given during the Zikra majlis by Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin in favour of female circumcision dug up the wound that still exists in my heart and eventually made me write this post. Listening to parts of the audio clip leaked from the majlis, at one point, Saifuddin says what translates to English as; “It must be done. If it is a man, it can be done openly and if it is a woman it must be discreet. But the act must be done. Do you understand what I am saying? Let people say what they want.” The Syedna made no direct mention of ...
