Rape is NOT cool

The 21st century has no room for patriarchal societies. The social structure of Pakistan has been moulded, formed and structured in a way to undermine issues of “the other gender” and feminism has no traces other than low-scale campaigns, most of which have been in vain. We have become a society immune to news of loss, tragedy and horrors. Every day, the bright screen in the corner of the room brings news of bombs, murders and countless tragedies, all of which pass us by in our own self-created apathy. The recent issue of rape in a street of Lahore has ...

PCB’s secret selection formula: Keep your average low and age high!

Dear Young Cricketers (YCs), you thought that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) would not reveal its selection criteria and you will be forced to start some other business? Please reconsider your decision, as I have found the secret selection formula of the PCB. Let me start by saying that, in cricket, statistics cannot be overlooked easily. However that is not the case with the PCB. What the PCB sees in its players while selection is beyond me. Today, even a ten-year-old can open espncricinfo.com to analyse the recent or overall performances of a player. I am not sure if the PCB selectors ...

Why isn’t my father home yet?

It’s getting late; I wonder why Baba hasn’t come home yet. I ask Ami if he’s called, she says no. My brother hasn’t heard from him all day either. My mother’s face doesn’t betray any anxiety, but I see her stealing glances at the clock every five minutes. I pick up the phone, and dial his number. It rings a few times, and then the lady on the phone – that I always took to be Benazir Bhutto when I was a child – says the number I’m trying to reach isn’t answering. She asks me to please try ...

Is the Smartwatch smart enough?

Last week at the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) in Berlin, three new ‘smartwatches’ were unveiled. The most anticipated was the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Gear. Sony showcased Smartwatch 2 and Qualcomm made an entry with Toq. While Apple’s iWatch is just around the corner, the Kickstarter backed Pebble has already sold more than 100,000 watches. It seems that the era of smartwatches is upon us. The internet is abuzz with analysts reviewing and talking about the wearable devices dubbed as smartwatches. While everyone seems excited about the future prospects of this new category of personal wearable tech, there is this underlying consensus developing though, that smartwatches or ...

A mother’s reflection

On days when I would be in bed and not found going up and about the house, you would stand in the doorway of my bedroom to take a quick peek. I guess you liked checking in on me, assuring yourself that I was alright. You would ask me if I needed something and then go away to get busy in whatever you would previously be doing. You had been like this since the day you began to toddle around the house, unchanged. This has always been your habit, my daughter, my lifeline — my one and only. You are not my possession ...

Why do you stare when I nurse my child?

When I was in New York, hounding the aisles at Buy Buy Baby and Babies R Us, my belly sticking out and my behind the size of two swollen water melons, I picked up everything that had a seal of approval from Parenting magazine. Sleep sacks. Check. Night-light. Check. Sleep sacks that glowed in the dark and eliminated the need for a night-light. Check. I’m not sure why I needed the glow-in-the-dark kind when I had the simple ones, but I convinced myself that when the night-light stopped working, the glow in the dark sacks would be put to good use. ...

Miss American 2014: A tale of racism and sexism hand in hand

Though you may not care – and neither do I – on Sunday a “beauty” pageant was held here in the US. These are contests where a panel of judges evaluates a group of women on their looks, talents and answers to random questions. Then one of them is crowned “Miss something”. This one happened to be “Miss America“. As luck would have it, this year for the first time an Indian-American won the pageant. Her name is Nina Davuluri and her parents come from the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Nina, however, was born in the state of New ...

The people of Karachi: Everyone has a story

When in Pakistan, do as the Pakistanis do. Decoding our culture is difficult due to the diversity Pakistanis are blessed with. You’ll always meet people here with a story; they all have a story to tell. And so do I. After having breakfast and reading the Smoker’s Corner on Sunday, I went to a butcher shop. Traditional butcher shops are not a place to visit for the fainthearted in Karachi. They have an acquired smell, resulting from carcasses of goats hanging right above the butcher’s counter and an even row of chickens lined across, with feathers plucked and skin removed. The ...

Things you should consider before deciding to work abroad

Pakistan produces numerous world class students every year. These students excel in a variety of fields including, medicine, engineering, accounting and business. However, due to the political and economic instability leading to high rates of unemployment, a lot of these students are forced to explore employment options abroad.   The idea of shifting to an alien country creates hopelessness and frustration amongst the youth and this leads them to make impulsive and irrational decisions. And, they seldom consider the implications of their rash assessments. For instance, a person accepting a job abroad at a position lower than his qualification or experience ...
