‘Kidz Dunya’ teaches your 5-year-old to get a job and manage money!

Finally, after a plethora of anticipation, ‘Kidz Dunya’ (KD) opened its doors to the entertainment starved kids of Karachi. Nobody really knew what was being done behind the sky blue panaflex on the food court floor of Dolmen Mall Clifton. The general perception was that a Sinbad style recreation facility is under construction and that the children will have yet another venue to go and enjoy coin rides. However KD changed the entire approach towards child entertainment and for the first time in Pakistan’s history, a dedicated facility for activity based entertainment and learning was introduced. Children role playing ...

Munawar Hassan’s words, spelling the end of Jamaat-e-Islami?

It is evident that the death of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Chief Hakimullah Mehsud has opened a Pandora’s box of accusations, suspicions and conspiracy theories; and provided enough fodder to the electronic and print media to feast upon. Although Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was fast to react, their statements were balanced and great caution was exercised by limiting their views to terming the attack as a conspiracy against the peace process. Maulana Fazlur Rehman meanwhile went the extra mile to stir up anti-US sentiments by saying that “even a dog killed in a US drone strike would be declared a martyr”. Of course, Maulana’s statement invited the wrath of many ...

Imran Khan: Check yourself before you wreck yourself!

Imran Khan is a dying phenomenon. He seems to be losing the fan base that he had gathered up in the last five to six years. His supporters and voters seem to be losing hope in him and the young generation, especially first-time voters, feel like they have been left in limbo with nowhere else to go. There was nothing surprising about Imran’s ascent in the political arena. People were tired of the same old faces, the same broken promises and needed a new ideal to latch on to. Consequently, most people followed Imran blindly, without giving any consideration to his ...

Bring the Army to Karachi!

Recently issued statements by the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain and the subsequent debate on the floor of the National Assembly have brought forward a plethora of concerns for citizens of Karachi. The ruling party, Pakistan Peoples Party, instead of giving hope and a plan to stabilise the worsening law and order situation in the city, has started pointing towards the 30-year-old violent history of this beautiful port city. Instead of showing resolve to eliminate criminal elements, the information minister for Sindh government, Sharjeel Memon, accused the MQM of hatching a conspiracy alongside the Pakistan Army. Allegations are ...

MQM’s much awaited cleansing

A few hours ago, Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) dissolved the Rabita Committee in Pakistan and London. It seems as if the chief of MQM Altaf Hussain, has finally taken notice of the ongoing problems within the party ranks. The rising popularity of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Karachi and the sour feelings, even among the Urdu speaking populace – which constitutes a major part of the vote bank of MQM – may have triggered this reality check. MQM represents the middle income group and has a track record of sending educated young men and women to the corridors of power and providing them with an opportunity to ...

Hook Line & Sinker: Bringing seafood to Karachi the coastal way!

Hook Line & Sinker (HLS) is located in a peaceful upscale neighbourhood of Block 4 Clifton. Rubbing shoulders with Oishi Sushi and China Kitchen, it is Pakistan’s first fine dining seafood restaurant. The catchy name is well complimented by the overall nautical ambiance and hospitality of the staff who, by the way, are dressed up as sailors and mariners. HLS is a breath of fresh air for connoisseurs of high quality fresh sea food. The moment you step in, you are greeted with live jazz music being played by a pianist-saxophonist duo that keeps you entertained, throughout your dining experience with soft ...

Sindh will be a much better place than Sind!

It was a very proud moment for the Sind(h) assembly when the members “unanimously” agreed that an amendment bill be passed officially correcting the spelling of the province of ‘Sindh’ which was incorrectly reported by Radio Pakistan earlier to have been changed to “Sind”. The people of the province eagerly awaited the verdict for this diabolical, life-threatening issue. Now that it has been resolved and clarity has been brought forth, this step will certainly bring prosperity, rule of law, health care and education to the Sind(h)is of Sind(h). Having named everything possible after Benazir Bhutto, the highly competent members of the ...

Be alert at the Jinnah International Airport!

For quite some time now, we have been hearing of people getting mugged and deprived of their suitcases after exiting the Jinnah International Airport. This is especially true for the passengers of long haul flights. Usually the victims arrive by midnight or early morning, when it’s convenient for the criminals to strike without being spotted. Recently, when I travelled to Karachi from the US, I noticed that a group of shady looking men were offering help in handling baggage near the pickup area and one of them even picked one of my bags and proceeded to put  in my car ...

Fast five: Sheer adrenalin

If this movie has to be described in two words, “sheer adrenalin” would be appropriate. Two hours and 10 minutes of a thrilling ride is what viewers should expect before hitting the theatres. Fast Five is all about heart-stopping action sequences, nerve wrecking suspense, signature car race scenes along with a bit of an emotional appeal. Writer Chris Morgan and director Justin Lin, the brains behind the mind blowing production, start exactly where Fast & Furious ended. Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) is busted out while he is being transferred to prison, after which crew decides to go their separate ways ...
