In pursuit of greener passports

I had been dreading this day for months. The inevitability of not being able to travel with a valid passport loomed over my head. Despite my fears I was optimistic when my brother and I headed towards Awami Markaz, Shahra-e-Faisal. CNIC? Check. Old Passport? Check. Yousuf in all his glory? Check. Our car was surrounded by zombies moving in for the kill. “Bhai Sahab, are you here for a passport? We can get it done for you and you won’t even have to get in line.” This always sounds too good to be true and it actually is; these “service providers” don’t come for free. ...

A burger to blow your taste buds away

A heartfelt thank you goes out to Mr Anonymous, the first person to actually think of putting a meat patty and a compendium of assortments (cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and onions being the most common) in between a bun. Genius! Little did he know that, what he had created would, end up being a global fast-food phenomenon. Beef or vegetarian, tofu or chicken – the options are endless. ‘Tis the season for… Christmas cookies!

Picture a decorated pine-tree with presents lying underneath, a fireplace with stockings hung above it and a really old man dressed in red, ringing a big bell and crying out “ho ho ho”. Christmas is the most anticipated and widely celebrated holiday among the Christian community. The big day is just around the corner and even though I don’t celebrate it, I appreciate the values it represents. It’s not just about giving expensive gifts to your loved ones, it’s about sharing and caring for people who do not have the luxuries some of us have. For those who don’t understand the true spirit ...

Forget love, I’d rather fall in chocolate!

Chocolate – the mere mention of this word sends shivers down my spine. You cannot even begin to imagine the lengths people go to, to get their favourite high. If you dig through history books, I’m sure you’ll come across at least a dozen wars that were fought for the love of chocolate – if this is not the case, then all historians are big-fat liars. People idolise TV stars and scientists, but I personally am a huge fan of Willy Wonka – heck, I’d even settle for one of the Oompa Loompas (don’t care if they are real or ...

A hot samosa on a cold winter night

It’s that time of the year again – the elusive Karachi winter is finally here so enjoy it while it lasts. Dig into your storage and dust out the oh-so-soft blankets, heaters, leather jackets, cozy mufflers and some downright crazy head-gear. This season brings with it the joys of eating piping hot food that would otherwise make you perspire. You seem to notice a sudden increase in the roadside samosay-wala’s clientele waiting in line (a polite way of referring to the mob that surrounds his stand), for this mouth-watering – albeit a bit unhygienic– delicacy you so love, becomes a ...
