Shazam! has as much muscle as our titular superhero

It was Superman who made his debut in Action Comics #1 in 1938 and made the superhero genre a sensation, but after Shazam (or Captain Marvel at that time) debuted in 1940, it was outselling the Man of Steel in comic book sales. This was probably the reason why Shazam was also the very first comic book superhero to be adapted into a film. Tom Tyler portrayed Shazam in the 1941 movie, The Adventures of Captain Marvel. But after DC Comics bought the rights to the character and reintroduced him as Shazam in 1972, the character went silent, mostly because people ...

Is the possibility of Bran Stark being the Night King really that crazy?

We are in the endgame now! Not talking about the Marvel Cinematic Universe here, but the world of Westeros, where the dragons are sleek and the queens are conniving. The final season of Game of Thrones will air on April 14th, and to say that fans are excited would be the understatement of the year. The Ice and Fire saga will come to an end with its eighth season, and hopefully the finale will leave fans satisfied. To say that Game of Thrones has a huge fan base would be an insult to the show, as its fan base knows no bounds. ...

Triple Frontier is a refreshing and authentic take on heist movies

It was almost a decade ago when Mark Boal, the writer of Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, penned a screenplay for Triple Frontier. Initially, Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp were supposed to headline the movie, but as the years went by and development on the movie halted, both Hanks and Depp backed off from the project. In 2017, Netflix finally bought the rights to the movie and got the ball rolling. Triple Frontier or Tres Fronteras is the point in South America where the borders of Brazil, Peru and Columbia meet. The movie revolves around a group of former ...

Priyanka Chopra literally had one job to do – promote peace – and she failed

Bollywood celebrities are loved by Pakistanis and treated as their own, which is why it was particularly disheartening to see many of them quickly join the nationalist bandwagon in the aftermath of the Pulwama attack and encourage military attacks against Pakistan. In no way was this more disappointing than it was in the case of Priyanka Chopra. Chopra is now a global celebrity, having won the Miss World competition, worked as a Bollywood and Hollywood actress as well as her brief stint as a musician. Being an international celebrity gives one the power to influence and inspire people all across the ...

The Umbrella Academy: If Marvel won’t give us superheroes, Netflix successfully will!

Netflix is getting rid of shows based on Marvel Comics, mostly because Disney’s own streaming service exclusively streams Marvel content. This has, however, left a huge superhero gap in its line-up of originals. In this day and age when superheroes are a roaring success, regardless of anything, it would be foolish to not jump on the superhero bandwagon in order to keep viewers engaged. Netflix’s new original series, The Umbrella Academy, is a clear indication that Marvel or no Marvel, Netflix won’t be letting go of superheroes anytime soon. Based on the comics of the same name published by Dark Horse Comics, ...

Cold Pursuit is not just Taken set in snow – it’s so much more!

In 2017, Liam Neeson gave us quite the scare when he said in an interview that he was going to retire from being an action hero even though he was being offered a tonne of money for playing such roles. This statement of his obviously meant that his January 2018 release, The Commuter, was going to be his last action film. Being a huge fan of the guy with a very particular set of skills, I watched The Commuter as soon as it released and I surely enjoyed it. But by the time the movie ended, I couldn’t help but feel sad as I ...

Cyborg Chucky: Why the ‘modern’ remake of Child’s Play is a huge disappointment

In the 80s, slasher movies among the likes of Halloween II, Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street were racking in quite the moolah at the box office. This genre was immensely popular amongst audiences who liked horror, and this led to the making of many popular franchises that remain cult favourites to this day. Child’s Play was another breakout hit which attained cult status and subsequently spawned a series of sequels. But Child’s Play was a standout amongst other slasher films, as it had its very own twist at the genre. If you’ve been living under a ...

The Battle of the Batmen: Why Ben Affleck should return as the caped crusader

Hollywood is currently on a superhero high, and has been on one for quite some time now. More and more production houses are trying to get a piece of the superhero pie, and while some are getting a major chunk of it, the rest are settling for leftovers. We have already seen so many superheroes on the big screen, and yet there remain more to come in the coming years. It is thus common in this era of superheroes to be asked, “Who is your favourite?” While that is a subjective question and depends on the individual, if the question asked who ...

Can Hobbs and Shaw live up to Fast and Furious’ hype?

The first Fast and Furious film had a bunch of street racers ripping off trucks carrying expensive televisions while the last Fast and Furious offering saw our heroes being chased by a submarine. Hence, it is sufficient to say that the franchise has gone nuclear since its debut. Their box office collection is a testament to the worldwide appeal of this action-fuelled franchise. Furious 7 and Fate of the Furious are the highest grossing movies of the franchise. What made these two instalments stand out amongst the rest was the fact that these movies had Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs come face-to-face ...

John Wick: Chapter 3 is completely bonkers and we love it!

Si vis pacem, para bellum (If you want peace, prepare for war). The trailer for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum finally dropped and it has us on the edge of our seats already. Keanu Reeves’ deadly assassin, who once killed three men in a bar with a pencil, was last seen in 2017’s John Wick: Chapter 2.  John Wick aka Baba Yaga was forced to go on a run after he was declared ‘excommunicado’. He had assassinated Santino D’Antonio on the grounds of the Continental Hotel, which caters to the criminal underworld exclusively and does not permit any business ...
