Is Valentine’s Day really something to get so worked up about?

There have been reports making rounds on social media that the federal capital, on the instructions of Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar, had banned Valentine’s Day in Islamabad. What followed was a mix of condemnation and congratulations from the two different sides of the coin; each one adamant that theirs was the right one. As a result, this reaction was followed by the Islamabad Deputy Commissioner denying that such an order had even taken place. Valentine’s Day will go ahead with full furor like it does every year; each restaurant, gift, flower and chocolate shop milking and capitalising it to the nth ...

Why is diversity at the Oscars even a topic of discussion?

It’s nearing the time of the Oscars again where actors gear up to receive their awards based on their acting skills. Only this time around, on February 28, many of the African American actors will be boycotting the event. The leading boycotter in front of the line is none other than Jada Pinkett Smith who has been pretty much doing all the talking for her usually very outspoken husband, Will Smith. She claims that far too many ‘white’ folks get awards, while the African Americans stay behind. Thus she urges (read: intimidates) black Americans to boycott the Oscars this year. [fbvideo ...

11 Pakistani WTH moments from 2015

1. The one-of-a-kind fashion show At the top of the list, it has to be the one-of-a-kind fashion show that took place at cow mandi, Lahore. ‘Qurban hojana’ took a literal turn when models took to the ramp. Ok, perhaps, there was no ramp but rather sand and a little mud with questionable manure thrown about here and there as decor. This was when both fully accessorised women and cattle walked together, limb to limb accentuating their… I actually don’t know what.  2. Corporate Trolling An ad with a sprawled Nargis Fakhri appeared on the front page of an Urdu newspaper. Some ...

Why I support Hamza Ali Abbasi standing up for Pakistan’s Ahmadis

All hell broke loose and the balance of the world was skewed when Hamza Ali Abbasi took to social media to write about his grievances yesterday. Usually the most popular regarding his views, this was the first time when tables were turned on him because he spoke up for Ahmadis. I am sure as he went to sleep last night, he must have been astounded with the reality check he got from people who were previously his fans and now out for his blood. His first post highlighted how Pakistanis are quick to condemn and mourn for people dying in Syria, ...

What they don’t tell you about being pregnant

It first starts with the woman (let’s name her Boops) peeing on a stick while simultaneously trying not to wet her hand. It is not a pretty sight. No, don’t try to imagine it. I said, don’t! Then comes the waiting period. Tic Toc, Tic Toc – the longest two minutes to date.  Is it one line, or two lines? One… no… two, I definitely see two! And voila, just like that you are pregnant. The hand you possibly splattered on is forgotten, as you wipe your forehead in relief (or fear) that you are now about to step into another phase of your ...

Does Netanyahu hate Palestinians so much that he is blaming them for the Holocaust?

The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, always the very popular man in the Muslim world, had a revelation to share with the universe a few days ago. He stated that the very man responsible for the genocide of six million Jews in the world, Adolf Hitler, had no intentions of killing them after all.   Who would have thought? In fact, it had been a Palestinian, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, who had convinced him to do it. Of course, it had to be a Muslim that led him astray. The Mufti, Haj al-Husseini apparently whispered melodiously “Burn Jews” in Hitler’s ears; his eyes ...
