‘Alien: Covenant’ doesn’t bring anything new to the franchise

The 70’s decade is about to come to an end and everyone along with their dogs is in awe of Star Wars. With this admiration, came the love for all things extra-terrestrial but then Alien happened and suddenly people were reminded that the outer space isn’t as fascinating they first thought. Ridley Scott managed to create a sci-fi/horror classic that conjured up a frighteningly chilling picture of the alien form that might be waiting for us out there in the void and the audience lapped it up like crazy. The ‘largely hit and lately miss’ franchise has since gone through a number of variations with various directors but Alien: Covenant is, if ...

Bates Motel: A cleverly plotted out thriller that is nothing like the movie

It was Friday night and I was really hoping to watch something different from the usual stuff that is shown on TV. It is then that I came across a series that seemed quite catchy solely by its title – Bates Motel. With modern alterations, it is based on the Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 film ‘Psycho’, starring Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates. I must say that the movie was a twisted thriller that was cleverly plotted out. I recently purchased season one of the series and frankly speaking, it is pretty darn good! The series stars Vera Farmiga (Norma Bates), a great, talented and fresh-face ...

The eccentric professor and his metal detector

“What will you do if… you never recognise love!? What if you never see it coming and going, if and when it comes your way?”, the old professor asked in his usual manner, keeping his voice low, tone, dramatic, like a Shakespearean artist. Each pause, at a precise moment. Words, so well selected and measured. Knowing exactly how to catch the attention of all the young men and women in front of him, who might have been busy seconds ago in their thoughts about their favourite songs, movies or games and most importantly, the opposite sex, but now, he knew ...

9 things you should know about the missing Malaysian Flight MH370

The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 has proven to be an absolute mystery with more questions than answers. The Boeing 777 plane, which was carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members, departed Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 00:41 local time on March 8. Its transponder’s signal was lost to air traffic control at 1:22 local time while still over the sea in the Gulf of Thailand; barely 40 minutes into its flight to Beijing, China. If there was one thing which was immediately clear, it was that Flight 370 had gone through a catastrophic event at 1:22 when its transponder stopped ...

There is a secret in Lahore, a mystery we can never decipher…

There is something about Lahore. Something in the streets of this city that is a secret. However, just when you think you have it figured out, there is something missing again. We often try to figure it out. What is it about Lahore that keeps us so intrigued? The Lahore I’ve deciphered in the past six years is one that has everything to offer – from the tolerance and beauty of its people, to all its imperfections. I made it a point to explore the city in and out, and have often resorted to using any form of transport available. There is something ...

The veil as an accentuation of beauty

The image you see above is based on one of my very first experiences in Saudi Arabia. With the naked beaches of Barcelona a not too distant memory, I headed down to the Arabian Gulf for a dip. There, I became mystified by something black and obscure out at sea. It looked like a huge jellyfish. Then, as it approached closer, I realised that it was in fact a woman. It was such an intense experience that I just had to capture it for myself. However, it was not until a few years later in Dubai, when I had acquired ...

Review: The ‘Game’ is not on

Although Game has an interesting cast, it fails dismally to get any points, when it comes to reviews. Actors Jimmy Shergill, Boman Irani, Abhishek Bachchan, Kangana Ranaut and Anupam Kher star in the mystery action movie. The Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Shidwani release does not live up to the high expectations I had after watching the trailers. The good thing is that Game wastes no item with background score and meaningless shots. Multi-millionaire character Kabir Malhotra (Anupam Kher) invites four strangers from different parts of the world, each with a murky past to his private island, Samos. They are: Ramsay (Boman Irani) a politician running for presidential ...

Murders in Balochistan: I blame the government

A friend of mine left Quetta for his hometown in Turbat recently without informing anyone. After reaching home, he re-established contact with the lot of us. Upon being asked as to why he would just get up and leave without telling any of us, he simply said it was for security purposes. According to him, many of his friends in the past had been whisked away from their homes in Turbat, Gwadar and Panjgur and are currently listed as ‘missing persons’. He clearly did not want a similar fate. And rightly so, I might add. Given the volatile situation in the province, ...

On love and marriage: Where did the spark go?

When two people get married, they might safely assume that they can’t afford to mess it up. Or can they? Today, I speak on behalf of all my girlfriends who are pondering the million dollar question: where did the spark go? A flaming start Initially most of us jump into the institution with gusto.  We look at it as a final end to a romantic rendezvous; the stolen glances and time restricted engagements that leave so much to be desired and explored. After marriage, there is an endless amount of time at our disposal and this reduces romantic fervour considerably. Where is the heart ...
