The playoffs of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) kept the spectators on the edge of their seats with every match turning out to be an absolute classic. Hosting the PSL final in Lahore is a bad idea

After continuous hype and controversy, Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif has finally given the go-ahead to hosting the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final in Lahore on March 5th. Following the announcement, many international players have decided not to participate if their team reaches the final. Adding to that, the famous panel of international commentators headed by the likes of Danny Morrison and Ian Bishop are also not traveling to Pakistan with the rest of the crew. So the real question that still remains unanswered is, is hosting the final in Lahore really worth it? Here are three reasons why the ...

This isn’t the first time Shahid Afridi decided to retire, but will it be the last?

Recently, Shahid Afridi announced his retirement from international cricket. This is not the first time this has happened, and it’s probably not the last either. #ShahidAfridi1996: Debut2011: Retired2011: Came back2014: Retired2014: Came Back2016: Retired2016: Came Back2017: Retired — Umair Shahid (@UmairShahidK) February 20, 2017 FUN FACT: Shahid Afridi has announced retirements under three different US Presidents. — Abhishek (@absycric) February 20, 2017 However, what it does do is give me the opportunity to analyse the retirement process in international cricket and how different teams go about it. Let’s start with our favourite (not): India: They don’t retire. Not easily at least. Some continue to play until they break a ...

Will this be the year for the Karachi Kings? Probably not

Kya Karachi jeetay ga? (Will Karachi win?) Well, so far it has been the other way round; the Karachi Kings have not been able to do justice to their slogan. Having lost the first couple of matches in the second edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), the Kings are looking down the barrel and are desperate for a win. The Kings had pinned their high hopes on their explosive opener Chris Gayle, however, like last season, when he represented the Lahore Qalandars, the King of T20 cricket is yet to find his feet in PSL as he struggles to score freely at the top. Is it too risky to host the Pakistan Super League final in Lahore?

“A dream is only a dream until you work hard for it, because when you do, the dream becomes a reality”. In February, 2016, one such dream became a reality; the Pakistan Super League (PSL) was finally a force to be reckoned with. What former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman, Zaka Ashraf, saw only as a probability became a reality with the efforts of Chairman Executive Committee, Najam Sethi, and his team. One of the main reasons as to why the PSL came into being in the first place was as a strategy to attract worldwide attention in the hopes that ...

Despite continuous ODI losses against England, I still have hope for my team

The pounding taken by the Pakistan team in the third ODI against England didn’t come as a surprise for me. I mean, we are ranked number nine and were playing against a team ranked number five in the world. The difference in rankings was obvious on the field. England outclassed Pakistan (like they have been throughout the ODI series so far) in every department. Which of these young talents will become the next batting legend?

There is nothing better than watching a brilliant cover drive or a solid defensive push from a high-quality batsman. But it seems cricket has lost all its excitement and enthusiasm with the retirement of world-class batsmen such as Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis , Rahul Dravid, Michael Clarke, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. There are exceptions, of course, such as Younis Khan, Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers who still know how to swing a bat impeccably. But all hope is not lost. A few noteworthy youngsters have repeatedly proven themselves and may end up becoming some of the best batsmen ...

Nine lessons Pakistan can learn from the other 2016 World T20 teams

The World T20 finished on an exhilarating note. What seemed to be a hopeless match for the West Indian team, turned out to be a miraculous victory when Carlos Brathwaite hit four consecutive sixes off Ben Stokes last over. While Brathwaite will be hailed as a hero in West Indies, the same cannot be said for Stokes. His reaction after his expensive over, 19 runs on four balls, was truly upsetting, but with everything said and done, England played brilliantly as well. With Joe Root’s 54 and two wickets for just nine runs, England started off great, but Marlon Samuels 85 ...

Congratulations, Pakistan, on hosting a phenomenally successful PSL!

It came, it started and it conquered the hearts of millions, in our nation and beyond. The Pakistan Super League (PSL) finally concluded last night and what an ending it was. It was, arguably, the biggest and most colourful cricketing event ever held in the history of this country. PSL was an event which many thought would not kick off and an event that was continuously bombarded with criticism from all directions during its inception stage. But PSL’s success proved everybody wrong. I’m pretty sure its success may have even surprised its financial backers. Speaking of surprises, the winners of the ...

With a record like his, why was Younus Khan excluded from the PSL?

As many as 98 players have been picked by five franchises for the inaugural Pakistan Super League (PSL). The tournament promises to be an exciting event. Out of the three formats of cricket, in T20 cricket, it is not likely that every player gets an opportunity to bat and ball in one game. The format is fast and one good performance can change the whole game more often, as compared to Test or ODI cricket. Fielding and fast-paced nature of the format means that fitness is essential. Having said that, this PSL is going to be without Younus Khan, the former World T20 ...
