Pirates of the Caribbean is back!

Ok now! If you guys still haven’t noticed, the latest fad to hit Tinsel Town is films featuring de-aged actors. We had an extremely young looking Michael Douglas striding into S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters to tender his resignation in the opening sequence of Ant-Man. One of the sequences from Captain America: Civil War featured Robert Downey Junior playing a youthful Tony Stark. Oh and if that wasn’t enough, we also had Anthony Hopkins jumping on the de-aging bandwagon with a scene from the hit TV series Westworld where he is in his younger avatar. The latest in line to go under the ...

Remembering the ones we lost too soon

It seems like the year 2016 just started a while back, but here we are, just a few days shy from welcoming 2017. A lot happened last year which took us by surprise and shocked us. But even amidst such unpredictability, we were not prepared to see some of the deaths that came our way. Some were lost to old age, some to disease and some to murder. But regardless, they were all taken too soon. Here are some of those names, in no particular order. Peter Vaughan Photo: IMDb Even though he had a career spanning 75 years, ...

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will not let Harry Potter fans down

When I first heard about a Harry Potter spin off prequel, I was a bit sceptical about whether any other wizarding fantasy could fill up the wizarding cloaks left behind by Harry and the gang. But little did I know that JK Rowling has some more dazzling magic left for us muggles (or no-maj if you are American). From the get go, this imagination-tickling flick nostalgically took me back to the magical world of wizards and witches with James Newton Howard’s famed title theme and the symbolic silver fonts used in the opening title. Fantastic Beasts and Where to ...

The mystic air The maiden fair Of how she meets And fairly greets The towering man With the face of a beast But she does not wince Or whimper or cower For he may be huge And tall may he tower She is brave and bold With a heart made of gold She will win his heart And calm his soul His fangs will soften His face will be smooth With a touch of love She will tame and soothe For there is no bigger spell Than the spell of love All curses are undone And demons turn to doves The new trailer of Disney’s famed Beauty and the Beast, has sent many into childhood reveries and it seemed to have woken ...

Rowling’s birthday, my present

The first time I picked up a Harry Potter book was at the age of 12, when my elder brother threatened to sit on me if I did not try and read one his favourite series. Fearing for my life, I dejectedly picked up The Philosopher’s Stone, and within minutes, I was hooked. Today, nine years later, I still feel that teenage excitement and fixation as I sit on my bed, desperately and acutely ready to soak in the final instalment. The fandom that surrounds Rowling and her books can only be compared to the great George RR Martin and ...

Would a man watch Supergirl with as much zeal as watching Superman?

I recently asked my sister-in-law’s young male cousin what TV shows he was watching these days.  “The Flash, The Avengers, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Supergirl,” he replied. “You know, all of the superhero shows,” he continued. I didn’t say anything in the moment, for fear of appearing uncool, but I beamed with pride at how casually he added Supergirl to his list. Much has been made about the fact that Supergirl was the first TV show in decades with a super powered female lead. But to him the Woman of Steel is just another epic crime fighter. Series 2: “The Djinn” Part 2 Hercules

Having met the djinn once, I was looking forward to meeting him again. So a few days later, I went into the study and knocked on his ‘door’, the drawer at the bottom of my grandfather’s hat stand. “What?” responded an irritable voice. I opened my mouth, intending to ask him to please come out, before recalling that I didn’t know his name. What does one call a djinn in the absence of a name? Djinn sahib? Djinn ji? Or plain and simple ‘djinn’? He saved me from this dilemma by appearing just then, all six inches of him, complete with bikini, spats ...

Why I think you shouldn’t watch ‘Horns’

These days, with an over abundance of clichéd romantic and post-apocalyptic dystopian movies, original films, like Horns, are a breath of fresh air. Based on the book of the same name by Stephen King’s son Joe Hill, Horns is a fantasy drama that tells the story of a man who suddenly grows a pair of horns after he is accused of his girlfriend’s murder. The story is set in a small town, where the Harry Potter-famed Daniel Radcliffe’s character, Ig Perrish, has been accused of killing his girlfriend Merrin Williams (Juno Temple) by bashing her skull in. However, due to the absence of any concrete ...

#HeForShe will not make you any less of a man

In an era where celebrities predominantly exercise an almost magnetic influence over their fan base to promote products and virtually dictate the way the populous dresses or behaves, it becomes exceedingly rare to see an individual stand up and talk about a pertinent issue. Emma Watson, an actress known mostly for her performance in the Harry Potter series, showed how celebrity power can be used in a positive way. Speaking before a UN conference, Watson kick started her ‘HeForShe’ campaign, a movement which aims to achieve gender equality by including men in the fight against female oppression. Although as a race, we have ...
