Stories about Ben Affleck

Will DC Comics’ Justice League be the answer to Marvel’s Avengers?

One thing I can never wrap my head around is the bizarre fact that all of Zack Snyder’s DC Comics’ movie adaptations are shot in the dark. Do they not experience daytime in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU)? With this slight moan out of the way, let’s turn our collective attention towards DC Comics’ answer to Marvel’s Avengers. The first full Justice League trailer just dropped and the entire internet world is in a state of meltdown. In a world where ‘The Avengers’ already exist, you’ve got to seriously up the ante if you plan on introducing a rival, and by the looks of it, this is ...

Live by Night brings nothing new to the crime drama genre

Even though Ben Affleck’s acting career has been decidedly uneven, his directorial efforts have generally been impressive. Which is why it is quite disappointing that his latest project, Live by Night, fails to deliver anything interesting, compelling, or original. Set in the 1920s prohibition era, the film tells the (ludicrous) tale of World War I veteran, Joe Coughlin (Affleck), who turns to robbery after his return from the war. But when he falls in love with Emma Gould (Sienna Miller), the mistress of Irish gangster Albert White (Robert Glenister), their relationship, as you would expect, doesn’t have a happy ending. ...

The Accountant just didn’t add up

Every once in a while, a movie comes along that seems to exist just to remind you of other big (and small) screen projects. That pretty much appears to be what The Accountant is trying to achieve. The same way Dexter meets Jason Bourne by way of A Beautiful Mind, Gavin O’Connor’s action thriller comes off as an amalgam of various (significantly better) projects that have preceded it, as it jumps haphazardly from one familiar plot point to the next. The film tells the story of Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), an autistic math whiz with extensive combat training who is running a shady accounting firm ...

Thank God for Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan!

Thank God for Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, their powers are unlimited! Now that they are back in Pakistan, India is safe and the Indian actors whose jobs they took or whose films (see Ajay Devgn) might have flopped because of their magical presence in side roles or extended cameos are even safer. However, don’t underestimate the power these two extraordinary individuals possess, one tweet from them, one line on Facebook, or just a simple press release and the entire Kashmir issue would be resolved. It is just amazing how selfish they are by holding back, when a little effort on their part ...

Batman v Superman: From Superheroes to Super Zeros?

After years of speculation and film production, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is now finally a reality. Batman v Superman and the real Dawn of Justice, I loved it!

Behold! The Dark Knight goes up against the Man of Steel! The moment all of us comic book movie nerds have been there for and it was inevitable. It was waiting to happen. And it finally comes at us with all of Zack Snyder’s visual glory. But underneath all the hype and excitement for this movie the real question is: Was it any good? Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill.Photo: Screenshot The answer is in one word. YES! Yes, yes, and a million times YES! This movie is good with a capital G. From the get-go, with the brooding tone and ...

Marvel’s Daredevil sets new standards for TV shows

Marvel has been on a bit of a roll recently, and by recently I mean the last seven years. While Marvel has gone from strength to strength on the big screen, the same cannot be said for their small screen ventures, and after the middling Agents of Shield and their work in progress, that is Agent Carter, Marvel is all set to expand its television universe as well. Marvel and Netflix have planned to release four stand-alone super-hero shows in the next three to four years. The shows are Daredevil, AKA Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and then a team of all of them in ‘The Defenders.’ Daredevil is ...

Muslim is the new black

This past Monday I watched CNN’s Don Lemon question Sam Harris sympathetically, almost apologetically, about Ben Affleck’s defence of the Muslims of the world. Lemon asked Harris loaded questions, encouraging him to spew his ignorant half-true rhetoric about Islam. And this claim I do not make condescendingly, rather Harris’ knowledge appeared lacking because of its biased subjectivity rather than studied objectivity on the subject of Islam, his simplistic rambling sounded amateurish and very myopic. A discussion on religion within the same religion is fundamentally complicated, let alone in comparison to other religions, hence to make the dialogue intellectual and fair, the media must play a responsible role and have ...

I disagree with Sam Harris and Bill Maher

I read a fellow blogger’s post on why she agrees with Sam Harris and Bill Maher. I am sure the writer has her heart in the right place and I completely agree with her principal argument – that the Muslim world needs serious introspection and reform. Except this is not the argument Maher and Harris put forth. They believe that the Islamic faith, not just extremist Muslims, needs reform. Academically speaking, Islam is defined by the Quran and the Sunnah, the practice of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). It is not defined by what the ISIS or some ‘Muslim government’ endorses. Nor is it defined by what 64% of Egyptian Muslims ...

I agree with Sam Harris and Bill Maher

A few days ago, social media went rife with people praising Ben Affleck. “Batman comes to the rescue” was the general sentiment tweeted by everyone and my friends happily posted the link to the clip from Bill Maher’s show. People were ecstatic that an American, a prominent actor at that, finally stood up for Islam on a highly rated TV show. The clip did not just cause a sensation in Pakistan; it opened a debate online with prominent analysts like Reza Aslan and Fareed Zakaria taking up sides and expressing their opinions. As I thought over what Maher and Sam Harris had said, I found myself ...
